Honestly I don’t really have that much to say today.  Just kicking back, making coffee, editing photos, talking to some cool people who are in town for the Cannabis Conference and looking forward to weekend 2 of Coachella! I went to weekend 1, I won’t be attending this weekend but I will be enjoying myself as much!  I can stream the performances, kick back and have a good time.  I may also…

IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! we survived lol and the kids were SO good. in prepping for the event I talked with them about how we’d spent this whole year exploring alternatives to traditional/colonial/etc modes of academic research, so to hold a really stiff, formal academic conference at the end would be like, kinda selling out the values we were trying to practice in our scholarship. so we spent a lot of time brainstorming ways to make the event a warm, relaxed environment without high barriers to entry for the people who were joining us (many of whom aren’t academics). and they did SUCH a good job!!! just so much laughter and playfully engaging with the audience and making it feel like a really celebratory happy space. and one student made these delicious popular african desserts and served them to the whole audience during her talk, which was partly about how immigrants living in the diaspora use food to build community and feel emotionally connected to home

and they just were SO thoughtful about how they presented the work too. like in preparing for the event this week a lot of them independently came to the conclusion that it didn’t feel ethically right to take participants’ stories out of the context in which they’d been shared and present them to an audience of strangers (“like people’s lives are just a movie you could show on Netflix,” in the words of one kid). they developed SUCH creative ways of sharing their work and engaging the audience in thinking through their core questions while still really respecting those relationships of trust they’d built. idk how to phrase this exactly but I think one of my huge learning goals for them (in the fellowship year as a whole) is that it simply does not matter what you say your values are… what matters (and what people notice & remember) are the concrete choices you make and the way you live out (or fail to live out) those stated values in your practice. we’ve spent so much time taking apart these model projects and mapping out how a stated value -> a concrete choice the researcher makes. it’s just SO cool and SO rewarding as a teacher to see demonstrable evidence that they’ve really internalized that idea and are independently applying it to their own projects and making these conscious ethical choices about how to share their work.

idk it was just so moving (people cried in the Q&A after one of the panels!) and so good and they are SUCH smart thoughtful human beings who have worked so hard on these projects. and I think sometimes I underestimate how important these kinds of year-end “closure” activities are for me too, you know? like in planning them my focus is very much on “they need this kind of event to celebrate the year and to feel like all of this hard work they’ve done is culminating in something,” but I kinda forget that these events are also just an amazing opportunity for me to step back from that day-to-day advising perspective to really look at the full picture and see how far the kids have come this year. they’ve just grown by leaps and bounds in their confidence in themselves as researchers and they’ve successfully executed these incredibly complex projects that many of them were super intimidated by at the beginning of the year. I know we’re not supposed to say “I’m proud of you” to kids because it takes away from their work/accomplishment and refocuses it on our feelings or whatever, but I’m really proud of them!!!! and I’m really proud of myself too lol I can see how much I’ve grown as a teacher/advisor in this field and how much that personal growth has positively impacted the learning experience for them. anyway I’m feeling really happy about the day and really good about the year as a whole. truly love this job and if this is our last hurrah at least it was a really good one.
