Resulta incómodo recordar cómo el público, o la crítica especializada inclusive, subestimaron la dimensión creativa, el potencial ontológico y la osadía artística de numerosos autores por entregar obras enmarcadas en géneros populares de consumo y evasión. No hace tantos años, artistas de la envergadura de Ursula K. Le Guin o David Cronenberg tan solo escribían “novelas del espacio” o dirigían “pelis de miedo”. Deseo creer que en la segunda década del presente siglo han sido superados este tipo de prejuicios.
“Misa de medianoche” (Midnight Mass, 2021), la nueva serie de televisión de Mike Flanagan, se sitúa dentro del género de terror en su apariencia. En ella encontramos varios de los artilugios narrativos y visuales que nos han dificultado conciliar el sueño desde los fantasmas, las brujas y los vampiros del transgresor cine mudo. No obstante, el empeño autoral de su creador aproxima la serie inesperadamente a películas como “Ordet” (1955) de Dreyer o “Silence” (2016) de Scorsese, en su esfuerzo por descifrar la fe religiosa; y a cintas como “The Thin Red Line” (1998) de Malick o “Offret” (1986) de Tarkovski, en su meditación existencialista. Tal vez las referencias que cito sean “palabras mayores”, pensaréis, mas ¿qué importa el tamaño, la popularidad o el prestigio de una imagen, un verso, una melodía, si se apodera de tu mente y corazón en tan solo unos instantes? Si con “The Haunting of Hill House” Mike Flanagan firmó en 2018 la serie de terror perfecta, con “Midnight Mass” nos acaba de entregar una obra valiente y ambiciosa, intensa y elegante, poliédrica y extraordinaria que acredita de manera rotunda el talento de su autor. Aunque probablemente solo transite como una “serie de miedo”, este impaciente servidor ha cometido la osadía de no esperar a que el tiempo la juzgue… ¿Alguien más se atreve?
