Kaidan was running.
Something was after him but he couldn’t see what it was. It was dark and cold and he didn’t know where he was running to. All he knew is that if this creature caught up to him, he would die.
He felt his legs giving up on him, making him shiver. He fell to his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Kaidan gasped for air, but something quickly grabbed him by the neck. He screamed for his dear life, hoping that the creature would spare his life.
“SHE…PARD…JOHN W- WHERE…ARE YOU!”
“SHEPARD!”
Kaidan’s vision slowly went pitch black as he shot up from his bed, realizing that it was only a nightmare. One he has been having for days.
He felt something touch his hand, but this time it felt warm…and safe.
“Hey, hey Kaidan it’s okay. It’s just a dream. I’m here. You’re safe.”
He turned to his left and saw Shepard.
He pulled him into a tight hug and he burried his head on Shepard’s shoulders.
“It felt so real, and…I…I was afraid that I lost you again.” Kaidan said. As his tears slowly fall down on Shepard’s back.
“I got you Kaidan.” Shepard whispered. “No one will hurt us anymore. Okay?”
Kaidan didn’t answer. He just nodded his head, with Shepard still wrapped around him.
And he didn’t want to let go.

The first time it happens, Kaidan wakes up to find Shepard sitting at the side of the bed, shoulders hunched, contours of his body bathed in sweat, trembling so violent and hard Kaidan thinks he might fly apart.
“Shepard?” he says in alarm.
“I can’t breathe,” Shepard wheezes, nails raking the back of his neck for a helmet that isn’t there. “God, I can’t breathe.”
Starlight gleams through the shutters.

What is it like to remember dying?
It’s something Kaidan never thought about before this. Before them. But now he notices how Shepard never looks up, never lets his gaze stray to the canopy of stars in his quarters.
When Kaidan thinks of Alchera he thinks of snow, billowing flakes washing out his vision as he trudges between escape pods searching for survivors, wind eroding the imprints of his boots until no trace of his passing remains.
When Shepard thinks of Alchera he thinks of stars.
Stars that never fade.
~
The massive geth dreadnaught is tiny against the surrounding net of stars.
Kaidan listens to Shepard breathe, harsh and hollow over the comm. Through the camera mounted on his helmet Kaidan can see the floating exudate, gaseous clouds of dust and metal particulates from the ruined docking tube.
Shepard’s heart rate spikes. Condensation clouds his faceplate.
Kaidan switches to a private audio feed. “Shepard,” he says. “I’m here. Just breathe.”
~
Shepard cannot see the stars in his sleep, but he feels them. His defenses go down when he dreams, and the stars yawn through the shutters, bright and terrible and threatening to swallow him whole.
~
A low moan pulls Kaidan out of sleep. He rolls over to find Shepard curled beside him, chin tucked to his chest. Faint starlight lims the ridges of his spine, enough that Kaidan can glimpse the abnormal outline of the metal plates holding him together. Shepard’s hands claw at the back of his neck, a gesture Kaidan has become too agonizingly familiar with.
Damaged seals. Losing oxygen.
The breath rattles in Shepard’s throat. A thin layer of sweat clings to his skin, though he cannot stop shivering. Kaidan slides closer, molding his body to him and threading him with his arms. His hands reach up and close gently over Shepard’s rigid fingers.
“It’s all right,” he whispers, guiding their hands down and wrapping them protectively around Shepard’s chest. Kaidan can feel the thump of his heart, the shallow rise and fall of his chest.
“Breathe. Shepard, breathe.”
How many nights, he wonders. How many nights did he go through this, alone in the dark?
“I’ve got you,” he murmurs, until the trembling stops and his body stills. “And I’m never letting go.”
I never thought of it at that angle
My John definitely has phobia against helmets which leads him in some argues with the rest of the crew
Especially after headbutting krogan
Without helmet
Damm Miranda was pissed
Little dialogue that I can imagine between Garrus and Kaiden in slow burn mShenko
- Hey, Kaiden, buddy, how’s going?
- Hey, Garrus, you never called me “buddy” before. What’s happened?
- Well… I saw your “hit and run” with Shepard recently… And it’s bad. Really, really bad.
- It can’t be THAT bad
- I can do better than that. It’s gotta mean something
- *sigh* And what do you suggest?
- Go for it. Stop messing around. You two would be great
- I don’t know, Garrus…
- Come on! You’ve been with him in the Mako. And survived! And didn’t kill him either! It’s. Gotta. Mean. Something. You should at least try
- *sigh* Okay, Garrus, I’ll… Think about it… Closely
Pairing: mShenko
Rating: M
Summary: Sometimes, to find the way back you just need room to breathe. Or a quiet moment to work on your biotic techniques.
Aka, I wanted to write about biotics and a lot of feelings got involved.

Maybe they’re just destined for disaster.
Hard not to think that after Horizon. Mars. The standoff on the Citadel.
When Kaidan came back on board the Normandyhe thought maybe they’d finally get some air to breathe, and find a way to take the step Shepard hadn’t made three years ago into an escape pod.
And then came the distress call from Gellix.
Of course it was Cerberus. Ex-Cerberus or not hardly seemed to matter when Gavin Archer was one of the people asking for help.
The look on Shepard’s face when Kaidan laid Archer out on the floor with a fist is not one he’s seen before, at least not directed at him. Surprise. Disappointment.
You don’t know, Kaidan had wanted to say. You weren’t there. You didn’t see.
There was a time when Kaidan would have told Shepard everything about what happened on Aite. About the David and the geth, and how seeing a human being strung up on a dais and plugged in like he was nothing more than an OSD had cut him to the bone in ways he didn’t think he could be cut. I was like David once, he would have told him, while trying not to think about Vyrnnus’ broken neck. I was worth more as a tool than I was as a person.
But that was before. Before Alchera. Before Horizon and that damned Cerberus logo affixed to Shepard’s chest. Before Mars.
Before, he never would have needed to tell Shepard, because Shepard would have been there and seen it for himself.
But this isn’t before. This is now, and the middle of an evacuation while under fire from some still rather committed Cerberus forces certainly isn’t the place to unpack that baggage.
That’s when the other shoe drops.
Kaidan thought he’d hallucinated the incident on Mars. It had to be something his addled brain cobbled together in the aftermath of having his head crushed against a bulkhead. Shepard may have always been unpredictable under live fire, but he’d never tried to use himself as a mass-accelerated object.
No one’s thatinsane.
So when the laser dot from a Cerberus sniper finds Kaidan’s head out on the landing pad during the evacuation he expects a bullet between the eyes, not the turbulent heave of the gravity well hitting him like a kick to the solar plexus. One second Shepard is beside him, the next he bolts at a dead sprint, corona snarling like a fire inhaling fresh oxygen. And then he’s a streak of light.
What the fuck?
Kaidan gapes, too stunned to react. The red dot jerks right, a cry erupting from behind a bollard as a mass-accelerated human being barrels down on the hapless sniper. Shepard collides with her as he skids to a halt, shoulder checking her to the ground. One swift boom of his shotgun reduces her to a lifeless heap. He spins on his heel and stalks towards the shuttle without a backward glance.
Kaidan exhales, the hairs on his arms still standing on end, the remnants of one of the most powerful – and reckless - biotic displays he’s ever seen still crackling under his skin. What the ever-loving fuck?
Garrus shakes his head as he joins Shepard on the shuttle. Clearly the turian has seen this before. Clearly what had happened on Mars wasn’t a hallucination.
Kaidan takes a good, hard look at Dr. Cole when he boards the shuttle, and an even harder one at Gavin Archer, who immediately turns away, jaw already discolored and swollen. But Kaidan avoids Shepard, who is all too happy to return the favor.
What the hell had Cerberus done to him?
