Across the Mediterranean, rural communities use public performances to banish winter and summon the arrival of spring. Every January in the inland Sardinian village of Mismoiada, people go out onto the streets for an ancient festival.
These costumes show male characters called mamuthones and issohadores, who parade through the village as a group. Mamuthones walk slowly carrying their heavy loads.
