Born and raised in Guatemala, von Ahn saw firsthand that high-quality educational opportunities were limited to those who could afford it. Inspired to change this, he created Duolingo to make language education free and accessible to everyone.

Rapidly spreading wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington are turning the skies orange across parts of the West Coast.
In California alone, fires have burned more than 2.3 million acres. Oregon’s governor has said the crisis “could be the greatest loss of human lives and property due to wildfire in our state’s history.” At least six people have diedanddozens were rescued from the fast-approaching flames by firefighters.
This is a view of Oracle Park ahead of last night’s game between the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners, which was played without spectators because of the coronavirus pandemic.
