An Istredd fanvid to Elephante’s “Come Back for You.”
So I went back and rewatched some of The Witcher season 1 again because of Reasons. Most of this, I hadn’t seen since I first watched the show way back in the beginning of 2020, and it’s been… interesting, to reacquaint myself with canon after two years of fandom, and to look at season one through the lens of knowing what’s coming in season two.
And my biggest takeaway is that we weren’t, in fact, wholly delusional for thinking this could get good. There’s a lot that’s rough in S1, but there really was so much *potential* there – the characters and emotional conflicts they laid the groundwork for, the self-sabotaging flaws they built into both Geralt and Yennefer, with the implicit promise that there would be arcs of personal growth in which they learn to do better, bebetter.
Yes, the writing was shit and there were a lot of missed opportunities, but plenty of shows have a comparatively weak first season, and audiences by and large are willing to forgive a rocky start. The beginning isn’tgoing to be as powerful as what comes later, because viewers don’t know and love these characters yet, they don’t fully understand/appreciate the stakes. You can start slow, setting up the drama that’s going to get spiked down later; it doesn’t have to be your best work, it only needs to be good enough to keep people watching.
…that said, the generosity that audiences are willing to extend to a weak first season doeskind of depend on the show being able to land the dramatic impact when it matters, which, uh, S2 did not. Noneof the big emotional reckonings that fans had been anticipating since S1 – Geralt with Yennefer, Geralt with Jaskier – got the weight and respect they deserved, just a brusque, perfunctory “okay we’re reconciled now” before plowing onward to the next plot point.
So much of this rewatch has been me going “Mm, yeah. There’s anotherthing they didn’t deliver any payoff on.”
Yeah, there is so much potential in the first season.
I actually liked the out-of-sequence story telling because it reinforced the themes of the episodes, and the actors did seem to be trying their hardest to make silk purses out of sows’ ears, but S2 did NOT stick the landing at all.
S2 seemed to go out of its way to not stick the landing, and to have incoherent themes. I’m not asking for epic philosophical discourse, but something along the lines of “trying to be better for your friends and family is a good goal” might have been nice, instead of “using people you claim as friends because monsters exist” which seemed to be what S2 was saying
The Witcher, season 2, episode 9. Cahir & Fringilla ✨⚔️
