Netherlands, waterbender and tamer of the waterways. It’s name means “lower land”, and it really is, with about half of the country, including Amsterdam, below sea level. The name “Holland”, is actually just two provinces within the Netherlands. They used to have a lot of flooding, but through impressive engineering and big brain action, they reclaimed land plots and built dijks (sea walls) to protect the country from being enveloped by the sea. In fact, 17% of Amsterdam is made up of land reclaimed from the sea or lakes. You know those windmills? In the early days, apart from grinding grains and such, they were used to pump water out of the land. Even to this day, they still serve as emergency water pumpers when flooding happens.

Another fascinating moment in history of the Dutch, there was a time where a single tulip bulb was equal in value to a house. The Tulip Mania rose and crash dramatically, and is considered the first recorded economic bubble in history. A bit complicated for me to get into, but worth understanding. They also have this fascination with the colour orange.

Dear friends,
KAIKIN (lifting of the ban in Japanese) is a new theatre play about the times when Japan was a closed country, no people were allowed out or in… except for Dutch merchants.
A lot of you here are artists yourselves and you know how difficult it is to make art without support! So I invite you to help and support
this play, which is written and directed by Ellis van Maarseveen, a director, actress and drama teacher who left the Netherlands 5 years ago to live and work in Japan. Here is the link for a crowdfunding website and remember how every euro matters :) Thank you for helping Ellis and her team to bring this play to life! P.S. I made the foxy poster ;)

Last Friday I had my first ever kids’ workshop held in Dutch language. I was very nervous that my level of Dutch might not be enough and I might have difficulties communicating with children (who don’t speak any english) but it all went pretty well! It felt very satisfying too, considering that I’ve been living in the Netherlands for the past 8 years.

I’ve also noticed that kids liked hearing my little excuses about not being fluent in their language and asking them to help me learn :)

I was doing this workshop together with Art-s-cool, a cultural organisation that  brings together kids and parents to see and make art. This workshop was organised in partnership with Blended festival. Kids were making dioramas that later will be used for the festival’s posters.

Kids split up into groups designing different dioramas about music, dance, food, theatre and other topics they associated with festival.

It was lots of fun and I’m looking forward to the next workshop this month. Here are some of the pictures I took during the workshop.
