LIVE

Malignant lesions of the ovaries include primary lesions arising from normal structures within the ovary and secondary lesions from cancers arising elsewhere in the body.

Signs and symptoms

  • Bloating; abdominal distention or mass
  • Pressure effects on the bladder and rectum
  • Constipation, indigestion, reflux
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Shortness of breath, tiredness, weight loss

Diagnosis

Physical findings are uncommon in early stages. Advanced disease may present with ovarian or pelvic mass, ascites, pleural effusion, or abdominal mass or bowel obstruction.

Pathophysiology

  • Typicallyspreads to the peritoneal surfaces and omentum
  • Occurs via local extension, lymphatic invasion, intraperitoneal implantation, hematogenous dissemination, or transdiaphragmatic passage.
  • Malignant cells can implant anywhere in the peritoneal cavity but are more likely to implant in sites of stasis along the peritoneal fluid circulation.

Epithelial tumours make up 90% of ovarian tumours. Other histologies include:

  • Sex-cord stromal tumors
  • Germ cell tumors
  • Primary peritoneal carcinoma
  • Metastatic tumors of the ovary

Epithelial ovarian cancer

  • Arises from epithelium covering the fimbria of the fallopian tubes, or the ovaries, both of which are derived from the coelomic epithelium.
  • Found primarily as cystic lesions with solid components.
  • Surface may be smooth or covered in papillary projections.
  • Cysts contain fluid from yellow to brown and haemorrhagic.

Four main histologic subtypes:

  • Serous (from fallopian tube)
  • Endometrioid (endometrium)
  • Mucinous (cervix)
  • Clear cell (mesonephros)

Tumours of low malignant potential

Tumours of low malignant potential (LMP) are a variety of much less aggressive epithelial ovarian cancer, with good prognosis.

LMP tumors can cause a range of symptoms similar to epithelial ovarian cancer, including increasing abdominal girth, an abdominal mass, abdominal pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, urinary symptoms, and gastrointestinal symptoms. They may be asymptomatic and found on routine physical examination or ultrasound scan.

In June 2021 I lost a close friend to ovarian cancer. I don’t really know how to put it into words but the grief is still raw.

There is no test for ovarian cancer, even though it is the deadliest female cancer. The last few decades have seen enormous advances in medicine, but sadly when it comes to ovarian cancer, very little has changed. Years of chronic underfunding for research into this disease has meant that today there is no way of detecting ovarian cancer in its critical early stages. Ovaries. Let’s Talk About Them. is dedicated to changing these facts.

#KofisForMamaMay: UPDATE

Hello, everyone!

It’s been awhile since I posted here on Tumblr. The last few weeks/months have been emotional and a total rollercoaster ride.

I’m really sorry for the lack of updates here. Instagram and Twitter have been the fastest and easiest sites for me to post. huhu

—————————————-

Okay, this is what’s happened so far :

Mama May

I am happy to share that Mama May completed her 18 cycles of chemo recently! HOORAY!

She still has a ways to go with her battle against cancer but we are keeping things positive.

She also had a PET-CT scan last week and the hospital just emailed me the results! We unfortunately cannot understand a huge portion of it because of the deep medical terms. I tried googling some of it. Wasn’t such a good idea for my peace of mind.

I’ll be heading to the oncologist’s clinic today so the doctor can explain the findings to me properly. Praying hard that the results are good.

If all is well with Mama May’s results the oncologist can refer her case to her OB/surgeon again and, God-willing, they can schedule mom for her surgery soon.

Kofi Sketches

I’ll be posting some more #KofisForMamaMay sketches, here and on KO-FI, too!

I promise I haven’t forgotten about them. ✨✨

Again, IG and Twitter have been more up to date with the sketches because I post it by batches on Tumblr. So so sorry for the delays!

—————————————-

We are honestly still so nervous about everything but we’re trying our best to keep the negative thoughts away.

The whole pandemic that’s still happening is also kinda not helping with our nerves though. The city we’re in is still on Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) while the rest of the neighboring cities have improved and are now on General Community Quarantine (GCQ). Sigh.

I know I keep saying it but we truly cannot thank you all for your generosity. We wouldn’t have made it this far without your help, thoughts, and prayers. All the nice messages and good vibes have been such an amazing boost for Mama May and I.

Imma continue working on the sketch requests and I will do my best to keep Tumblr updated!

DMs and asks are always open! (I’m just really slow with replying to them )

Daghang salamat! (Thank you very much!)

Much love to all of you!

✨ #KofisForMamaMay ✨

Hi, guys! Meet my mom, May!

(She’s shy even in doodle form thus the face mask. Lol!) She’s known to friends and family as Mama May. (You can call her that too if you like! )

I might have mentioned a couple of times that I was out of town.

Well, it’s because I’m with my mom who is having her chemotherapy miles away from home. She’s currently battling 4th stage ovarian cancer.

We’re in an unfamiliar city in the midst of this covid pandemic. (We’re forever grateful to friends and relatives who helped us here.)

And because of the lockdowns going on we weren’t able to go back home, where we planned to transfer her chemo treatment.

I currently have my ko-fi account open to raise funds for my mom’s cancer treatment. It would mean the world if you could check it out and buy a kofi! Each kofi is only $3 each.

I currently can’t reward you with digital art doodles if ever you donate (my gear is back home ) but I can make a traditional doodle for you if it’s alright! ✨

After you buy a kofi just DM me here or on twitter/instagram and we can talk about your doodle request.

When I’m done I’ll post it to my socials and give you a helluva shoutout!

I don’t know how far this’ll reach but it won’t hurt to try. Any amount will help my mom immensely. (Positive vibes and prayers also mean the world!) ❤

We wish you all the best and we hope you consider buying a kofi for Mama May. ❤

Maraming salamat!

(Thank you very much!)
