                                         The World of Lizzie Riches

“Lizzie is a Londoner by birth though growing up near Epping Forest gave her an enduring love of the natural world. Childhood visits to the National Gallery awakened a passion for painting and visiting Audley End at the age of five began a lifelong interest in Elizabethan Portraiture. A hopeless student at Art School, Lizzie preferred to develop her own style by going back to study the paintings she had loved as a child. She joined London’s Portal Gallery in 1976, exhibiting with them in Chicago, New York and Paris and continuously in London ever since. Portal introduced Lizzie to The Red Dot Gallery, close to her home in Norfolk, in 2011. In turn this led to fascinating project ‘In Search of The Golden Caroline’ – working with The National Trust in association with Red Dot, Lizzie was invited to create a series of paintings to celebrate an aspect of Blickling Hall’s history. Lizzie explored, through her paintings, Lady Caroline Suffield and in doing so ‘brought to life’ an 1800’s chapter.”

                         Mysterium Regnum Plantarum (Pancrace Bessa)

“Bessa was commonly known as the painter of flowers. Because he specialized in scientific and lifelike representations of various plants, he also worked with the most important French horticulturists and botanists. Especially in this period, when many new plants were discovered and were to be catalogued, the pictures of plants and also some animals Bessa made were of great importance. Mainly he painted plants. When he painted animals, he mainly painted insects. Coloured engravings of a raven or a kangaroo are therefore rather the exception. His pictures stand out strongly because they are so detailed and vivid. His entire oeuvre comprises several hundred pictures.

Born in Paris on 1 January 1772, Bessa also completed his studies in Paris at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. His art was influenced above all by the plant painters Gérard van Spaendonck and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Maria Karolina of Naples-Sicily, the Duchess of Berry, daughter-in-law of Charles X, was an important supporter of Bessa. This patronage expanded in the following years to such an extent that Bessa gave art lessons to the ducal family, especially to the Duchess herself. Before his death in 1864 Bessa produced his last work of art, Flore des Jardiniers. An eye for detail, a love of the world of plants and colourful illustrations make Bessa a very special painter of the time. © Meisterdrucke.”

                                  Perpetual  Beauty (Raja Ravi Varma)

“Raja Ravi Varma was an Indian painter and artist, considered as one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian art. Raja Ravi Varma is known for his amazing paintings, which revolve mainly around the Puranas (ancient mythological stories) and thegreat Indian epics - Mahabharata and Ramayana. Ravi Varma is one of the few painters who managed to accomplish a beautiful union of Indian traditionwith the techniques of European academic art. This is one of the reasons why he is considered as one of the most, if not the most prominent Indian painters. Varma was also responsible in taking the Indian art all over the world with his impeccable technique. While the Europeans and other art lovers admired his technique, the laymen of India enjoyed his work for its simplicity. More often than not, Varma’s paintings highlighted the beauty of South Indian women which were admired by all.

His portrayal of Hindu gods and goddesses went on to become worship material for many people belonging to the lower castes. Back then, these people were often forbidden from entering temples and thus they celebrated Varma’s works, for they gave them an idea of how the deities looked inside the temple. He also managed to improve the artistic knowledge and spread the importance of art among Indian people. He achieved this by making affordable lithographs, which were accessible even to the poor. Alternatively, this also made him a household name and Raja Ravi Varma soon captured the hearts of all. Recognizing his feat, Viceroy Lord Curzon honored him with the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal for his service in thefurtherance of public interest.“
