Stub Catalog: March 16, 1996 - The Birdcage

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • Jokes about sexual identity and orientation were sailing way over my head in 1996. So approximately 110% of this movie was lost on me.
  • I do remember being fascinated by a statistic going around at the time about Robin Williams. He was the first actor to have two $100 million movies out in theaters at the same time. Astonishingly I think the other one was Jumanji?

Stub Catalog: March 2, 1996 - Mr. Holland’s Opus

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • Ugh. That tagline reads like a parody - “Of all the lives he changed, the one that changed the most was his own.”
  • 12 year old me knew this was sentimental tripe, which isn’t so much a credit to me as it is a discredit to this movie.

Stub Catalog: February 7, 1996 - Daylight

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • Probably right around the time I realized I fucking love movies about small groups of people trapped somewhere. Naturally then, I loved this movie and you still can’t talk me out of it to this day.

Stub Catalog: February 2, 1996 - Black Sheep

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • How 90’s was this movie? I’m remembering the rock the vote concert scene specifically (Mudhoney!).
  • Obviously, Black Sheep is inferior to Tommy Boy. But it’s weird just how polarized the cultural perception of these two films has become. I feel like Black Sheep is barely remembered, and Tommy Boy is an unimpeachable classic in the “low-brow comedy from SNL alums” category.

Stub Catalog: January 20, 1996 - Eye For An Eye

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • In the running for most forgettable movie ever. I definitely saw this, but I don’t remember one single second.
  • Hard to believe it was as recently as the mid 90’s that Sally Field could top-line a movie. Weird.

Stub Catalog: January 6, 1996 - 12 Monkeys

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • It definitely took about 5 subsequent viewings before I understood this film on any level.
  • The image of the lion roaring from the top of some building in the ravaged near-future is seared into my brain. Indelible.

Stub Catalog: May 11, 1996 - Twister

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • ‘96 was a solid year for blockbuster movies. This was right around when I started going to movies with my friends instead of my father. Seismic shift. He gave me a good start. I’m not sure if my choices followed through on that promise. We’ll see.
  • The scene with the cow killed me. You know the one. Also when Philip Seymour Hoffman shouts “We crave sustenance!” Random.

Stub Catalog: April 27, 1996 - Mulholland Falls

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • Nick Nolte was born grizzled.
  • Even if it’s only half-decent, I’m a total sucker for film noir.

Stub Catalog: April 14, 1996 - A Thin Line Between Love and Hate

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • No idea why I would have seen this. Best guess - it was the mid-90’s and Martin-mania was sweeping the nation? Damn, Gina.
  • One thing from the movie actually did manage to stick in my brain. The opening scene is a rip-off of the opening scene from Sunset Boulevard. Predictably the only memorable thing about this movie came from an entirely different, far greater film (something I wouldn’t even realize until 16 years later).

Stub Catalog: April 4, 1996 - Primal Fear

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • My introduction to Edward Norton. Maybe the world’s introduction? Anyway he was an absolute powerhouse in this movie. Major screen presence. Terrifying and fascinating.
  • I have a new found respect for Richard Gere’s career choices. It seems like he only goes after these small-scale passion projects, especially lately. Something admirable about that.

Stub Catalog: March 30, 1996 - Sgt. Bilko

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • I don’t think Steve Martin even remembers anything about this movie. I sure as hell don’t. I take that back - I remember Phil Hartman was in it. Standing out in absolute dreck was his calling card.
  • I didn’t have any knowledge that it used to be an old TV show, and still don’t, essentially.
  • I went with a bunch of friends for my 12th birthday. So a big retroactive “sorry” to all those kids is in order.
