Today I found a really pale one! My strategy of saving unusual looking pillbugs from being eaten by the box turtle when I take him outside to eat is finally yielding results.
Just found out that the homeschool class has been thwarting my efforts by intentionally feeding the “special” ones to the box turtle when I’m not there!!! No!!! They all taste the same and he can’t tell the difference!!! I’m so disappointed
Good news: at least two of the tangerine ones have escaped the turtle and the children who love feeding him. I almost want to put a sign up but I think that would encourage more people to mess with them.

Yeah! While freshly-moulted roaches and beetles are often a reddish color before darkening back to black, isopods tend to be pale. They’re crustaceans, and I think their exoskeleton is perhaps Built Different in some ways because of it.
One of the most obvious tells that an isopod has moulted recently is that it’s got a two-tone appearance. This is because they shed their old exoskeleton in halves, otherwise known as biphasic moulting. Here’s one from “my” colony that recently shed their front half and now it looks like they’re wearing pants.
To the people accusing me of no bitches, maidenless behaviour ect. I will have you know that mine own garden is crawling with the most wonderful variety of girls you have ever seen
May i see it?
here she is! my favourite girl!
