On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1722, Bartholomew Roberts was killed in battle off of Cap Lopez.

After James Skyrme and the crew aboard the Ranger were captured by Capt Chaloner Ogle a few days prior, Roberts and his remaining men had seized the merchant ship Neptune. Many of them were drunk from celebration when Ogle’s HMS Swallow reappeared on the horizon.

When Roberts saw the ship approaching, he thought it was the Ranger returning, but a deserter from Swallow confirmed it was the Royal Navy ship bearing down on them. He knew he had to come up with a plan, and fast.

Their best bet, he figured, would be to sail straight toward the Swallow and then past it. While it would expose them to a vicious broadside, he knew that if they survived it they would be able to escape. Knowing their chances were slim, he dressed himself for battle in true Roberts’ fashion:

“Roberts himself made a gallant figure, at the time of the engagement, being dressed in a rich crimson damask waistcoat and breeches, a red feather in his hat, a gold chain round his neck, with a diamond cross hanging to it, a sword in his hand, and two pairs of pistols slung over his shoulders …“ - GHP

As the Royal Fortune came upon and past the Swallow, the helmsman was unable to keep the ship on course, allowing the Royal Navy ship to deliver not one, but two devastating broadsides.

Roberts was hit by grape shot on the second pass; a fatal blow which cut open his throat. He collapsed across the blocks and tackles of a gun, where his body was found by a member of his crew.

Before his remains could be captured by Ogle, Roberts’ men weighed his body down, wrapped it in the ship’s sail and, according to Roberts’ own wishes, threw his body overboard.

The battle raged on for two more hours but when their mainmast fell, the pirates had no choice but to signal for quarter and surrender.

The death of Bartholomew Roberts shocked the pirate world, and is widely believed to mark the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.

On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1718, Blackbeard began his infamous blockade of Charleston.

Blackbeard’s pirate fleet arrived off Charleston Bar, nine miles south of town, and seized the pilot boat before it could sail to town and raise an alarm. Then, they fanned their four vessels out across the approaches to the bar and waited for unsuspecting ships to sail into their trap.

Within the first few days they captured at least five vessels: two outbound to London, two inbound from England, and a tiny sloop, the William, headed home to Philadelphia.

The first of these captures, the 178-ton Crowley, had been headed out of the river, bound for London carrying some of the most distinguished citizens of Charleston. Blackbeard had them transferred over to the Queen Anne’s Revenge. They were interrogated thoroughly and then returned to the Crowley, where they were locked into the ship’s hold to await their fate.

Blackbeard and his crew convened and decided that they would request a ransom for their captives. If they were refused, they threatened to not only kill all the captives and burn their vessels, but also to sail into Charleston harbor, sink all the ships there, and attack the town itself.

Blackbeard sent a small group of pirates with their ransom request: a chest containing a list of medicines drawn up by their surgeon, with a total value of £400.

With the captives in the hold of the Crowley and several captured ships at anchor amongst the pirates, Blackbeard and his crew would now wait to hear whether the town would agree to his demand or be destroyed.

On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1718, Blackbeard burns the merchant ship Protestant Caesar.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge came upon the merchant ship on the morning of April 8, riding at anchor off the bay of Honduras with her holds half-filled with freshly cut logwood.

When Capt Wyer spotted “a large ship and a sloop with black flags and deaths heads and three more sloops with bloody flags,” he called his men on deck to ask his men if they were willing to defend the ship from attackers.

Wyer attested that his men answered “if they were Spaniards they would stand by him as long as they had life, but if they were pirates they would not fight.”

When it became clear that these were the same ships they had encountered the month prior, now sailing in concert with the infamous Blackbeard, Capt. Wyer and his men quickly abandoned ship. They hid for three days in the jungle foliage and piles of logwood on shore.

Blackbeard sent a messenger to find Wyer, stating that if they surrendered peacefully they would not be harmed. Deciding to trust the messenger, Wyer and his men surrendered and were taken to Blackbeard.

Blackbeard thanked them for obliging his request but informed them that he had to burn the Protestant Caesar nonetheless, as it sailed from Boston and must be destroyed in revenge “for executing the six pirates” who had survived the Cape Cod shipwrecks that claimed the life of Sam Bellamy and most of his crew.

On the morning of the 12th, Blackbeard’s men went aboard the Protestant Caesar and set her alight, logwood and all. True to his word, he released Wyer and his men unharmed; they all eventually made it back to Boston.

On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1722, the first six members of Bartholomew Roberts’ crew to be found guilty of piracy were hanged at Cape Coast Castle.

Upon being brought back to Cape Coast Castle after their defeat and capture by Capt. Chaloner Ogle, the most obviously guilty and the most obviously innocent were the first to be tried. Starved, emaciated, and dressed in rags, only a small handful retained their swagger.

At the end of March the court rattled through sixteen of the Old Standers in one day. Fourteen were found guilty; six were immediately sentenced to hang. The court was eager to remove any ringleaders from organizing a potential uprising.

These six, who could be considered the very core of Roberts crew, stood in front of Captain Mungo Herdman as he passed judgement: “It is your aggravation, that ye have been the chiefs and rulers in these licentious and lawless practices.”

As was so often the case, these condemned six were led to the gallows at Cape Coast Castle and hanged until they were dead. Their bodies were then taken down and hung in gibbets “on the most eminent hills around this place, very conspicuous to the shipping as it passes.”

The trials would continue for three weeks, with a total of seventy-two men sentenced to hang. Of those, twenty had their sentences commuted to seven years’ service in the mines of Cape Coast Castle - an effective, albeit much slower, death sentence. It was the greatest slaughter of pirates ever carried out by the Admiralty.

The First Six were:

William Magness
Thomas Sutton
Little David
Valentine Ashplant
Christopher Moody
Richard Hardy

On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1718, Stede Bonnet, aboard his ship Revenge, unsuccessfully attacks the merchant ship, Protestant Caesar.

Bonnet’s men spotted the merchant ship Protestant Caesar near Roatán, off the coast of Honduras. Protestant Caesar was an impressive ship boasting twenty-six cannon and 400-tons; she was more than four times the size of Bonnet’s Revenge.

Nonetheless, Bonnet and his men decided to give chase and attack. They caught up to the Protestant Caesar at 9pm and, with a clever move, cut behind the merchant ship and fired five cannon and a volley of musket.

The Caesar responded by firing off two stern guns and a hail of bullets. As the smoke cleared, Bonnet called out that if the ship fired another gun, no quarter would be given, and they would kill everyone onboard. Knowing a bluff when he saw one, the ship’s captain - William Wyer of Boston - let off another salvo of his cannon.

The two ships exchanged fire for several hours, but seeing the futility of the effort, Bonnet eventually broke off from the engagement and retreated into the night.

Disgruntled by the continued lack of successes under Bonnet, the crew made it known that his captaincy was on thin ice; many vowed to abandon when the ship came into the next port. As they pulled into Turneffe several days later, many were pleased to see the Queen Anne’s Revenge anchored nearby.
