Hey, sorry for the long break (holidays + pneumonia, whee), but we’re back with a Retronauts tie-in: Bushido Blade! Jeremy and I just spent a while talking about Square’s 1990s fighting games, and this is a big one, known for its unique mechanics.
Developed by LightWeight under director Tetsuo Mizuno and released on PlayStation in 1997, Bushido Blade is a stripped-down weapons-based fighting game based on precise maneuvers and realistic damage. With no life bars, meters, or any interface to speak of, players go for one-hit kills or disabling an opponents limbs with clean hits.
I included a few shots of the manual highlighting the unique mechanics - controls change if you lose use of a leg or an arm, stances play an important roll, and you can also fight dirty by trying to blind an opponent with dirt. Most combos are tied to weapons, and you can mix and match as you please, but each character has a few special moves with weapons they favor.
In story mode, each character escapes through a castle fighting their former fellow assassins and then up to five bosses in a row. One of two final secret bosses is seen only if you make it through with zero damage, which is quite a feat. The stage layout is also really cool, featuring connected regions of one large location, and because battle is free-roaming the terrain comes into play with hills, water, and trees getting in your way.
All in all, a really addictive and intriguing variation on the fighting genre - and one we’d love to see an update of today.
(Sadly I don’t have an Ehrgeiz or Tobal artifacts to share, as I only played other people’s copies of those games, but I do have one more bit of Square fighting history which I’ll put up soon…)

Yuri Visual Novel ‘Heart of the Woods’ Released on PS4 and PS5
Studio Élan’s 2019 Yuri visual novel Heart of the Woods is now available on Playstation 4 and Playstation 5. The game was ported to Switch in July of 2021. Future releases on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are planned as well.
The game’s publisher, Sekai Games, describes Heart of the Woods.
Maddie Raines has had enough. After years of serving as manager, editor, and general business-handler for her best friend Tara’s popular paranormal vlog channel, she’s finally ready to move forward with her own life. But when she agrees to take one last trip with Tara to the mysterious village of Eysenfeld, she’s suddenly swept up in a dangerous supernatural crisis that will change the course of both of their lives forever. A strange young woman named Morgan has promised them undeniable proof of real paranormal phenomena, and what she has to offer eclipses anything they’d ever seen before.
However, out of all the strange occurrences the three of them bear witness to, one in particular captivates Maddie in a way she’s never been before: the ghost of a young woman. This woman is Abigail, the victim of a centuries-old injustice now bound eternally to the forest surrounding Eysenfeld. Drawn to Maddie in a way she can’t explain, Abigail reveals herself to another person for the first time in more than 200 years.
While Tara and Morgan investigate the mysteries surrounding the village itself, Maddie begins to form a bond with Abigail that grows to be more intense than any bond she’s felt before. As she learns the truth about Abigail’s death and imprisonment, she realizes that it falls to her and her friends to break the curse that has ruled over Eysenfeld for centuries. But more importantly than that, it falls to her to finally free the woman she loves.
Heart of the Woods received very positive reviews for its detail, story, and LGBTQ+ themes, with particular praise, garnered towards transgender character Tara. YuriMother reviewed the original PC release on Okazu and awarded it a 9/10. The original PC release included optional 18+ content, which is absent from the T-rated console release.
The game features two different romances, one for Tara and one for Maddie, beautiful CG artwork by Rosurri, an original soundtrack by esselfortium and Astartus, and full English voice acting.
Heart of the Woods is directed by Josh Kaplan, who co-wrote the game with Rachel Gruber. Minute served as the game’s visual director and programmer. GUI and graphic design were done by adirose.

Marvel Announces New Spider-Man Game for the PS4 at E3 2016
Web-heads, rejoice! It seems that the rumor were true! Partnering with Insomniac Games, Sony has announced they are working with Marvel Games to develop a new, exclusive Spider-Man title for the PS4.
While there’s not much known about the title currently, Spider-Man has been a favorite franchise for Playstation gamers as the Queen’s webslinger has often appeared on Sony’s console.
Bill Rosemann, the Director of Marvel Games, took to the internet to answer a few questions about the title by first saying the company chose to create a new Spider-Man title because, “when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Peter Parker, they broke the mold of what a Super Hero could be and set the bar by which all others would be judged. And that’s exactly what we plan to do with this game: break the mold and set a new bar of greatness for Marvel Games!”
Marvel has been fairing well with its video games due to widely successful mobile games like Avengers AcademyandMarvel Puzzle Quest. And, if this trailer for their next console title has anything to say, Spider-Man will improve upon that trend.
