Client Spotlight for Throwback Thursday

Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie

In 1998 I tattooed Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie at my studio on Carlton Street in Toronto.  BBT asked me to renovate a few old tattoos that he wanted covered.  Angelina requested the latin words “quod me nutrit me destruit”  (what nourishes me destroys me) on her abdomen.

Billy Bob returned a second time for more renovations of old tattoos on himself and a tattoo that he gifted to Cate Blanchett’s husband, Andrew Upton. Cate came to my studio to watch while I finished her husband’s tattoo.

In 2002 Billy Bob flew Raven and I to Montreal where he was filming Levity.  He requested that I design a bird of prey incorporating his initials and the names of Angelina, their adopted son Maddox, and BBT’s two sons, Harry and Willie (named after Willie Nelson).  While in the chair, Billy Bob told me that he and Angelina fell in love in my studio.  Their tattoos sparked a whirlwind romance and marriage that put them in the media spotlight until they separated in 2003.

Today’s #tattoo was a great session with Jason. I always have a lot of fun when Jason comes over. I hope these images give you a good idea of the tattoo from different views. Today’s session was focused on the lowest area from elbow to wrist.

Photography.

In the artist’s words:

Before I was an artist I was an aspiring clothing designer many years ago. Fashion design slipped into the background as art came to the fore. My longstanding interest in fashion began to return in 2013. This portrait, “Femme au Chapeau Rouge” is a reflection of that and of my interest in photography as well. I recently opened a small photography studio where I took the photo from which this work was created.

“Femme au Chapeau Rouge” was born earlier than expected. I expected to labor long with this idea in the form of a painting but instead she popped out unexpectedly as a digitally manipulated photograph. It is the first formal work of 2017. I think of myself as a neo-modernist artist because I identify so heavily with the European early modern masters. In that respect I see this piece as strongly reflecting a combination of neo-pointilist, neo-cubist and neo-impressionist elements as well as, of course, Mademoiselle Chanel. Source: Saatchi
