Goodbye Fergus, Hello Vision Quest

For those of you who have visited 455 Tower St. North in Fergus, Ontario, the place where you likely walked through the open doors of a tattoo studio, healing space, artist hub, by Advertise">learning centre, yoga retreat, outdoor oasis, hideaway, lush gardens, animal sanctuary, communal gathering and party central, all under one roof, the time has come to say goodbye to this incarnation of Urban Primitive. For those of you who haven’t had a chance to visit yet, see the by Advertise"> videobelow. After 11 successful years of building a unique experience of Urban Primitive for its devoted clientele from around the world, Daemon and Raven Rowanchilde have felt the need for a bigger shift to happen. Raven began calling for a shift on all levels, personal and collective, in 2014 with her hashtag: #SHiFT. Staying true to their calling of creating an active and ongoing healing environment for themselves, their clients, their animals, the planet and its people, Daemon and Raven have a new plan and a new vision for Urban Primitive. But first, they must find the right home.

Saying goodbye to their Fergus home come June 2016 won’t be easy as it holds many wonderful memories and offerings, including the importance and deep sense of community support, something Daemon and Raven felt strongly during Raven’s recovery from brain surgery. So, finding the right person to move into their home of over a decade was really important to them. Realizing their home appealed to a niche by Advertise"> market, while also envisioning a very specific buyer – professional musician or artist – they were pleasantly surprised when two families (a family of five plus the parents) made an offer. And, just as important as finding the right person to move into their home was also finding the right person to sell their home. Fortunately for them, their daughter Destiny Garrafa, a Sales Representative for Royal LePage, made this happen at just the right time. When they move in June, they will have been at this location for 11 years. The number 11 is a significant number for Daemon and Raven, showing up frequently and mysteriously and marking pivotal moments in time for them.

As Daemon and Raven waited for the right buyer, they realized that the gift during this waiting period was the evolution of their ideas for Urban Primitive and a greater sense of their mission. While “The Vision” will be revealed during a later date, here’s a general sense of where they are headed, what they are looking for and what they will be doing in the new Urban Primitive home.

The overall vision for Urban Primitive is to be a perpetual nexus for spiritual connection, with Nature as the source to heal ourselves and our relationship with Earth. Their ultimate goal is to live in sustainable harmony with Nature and to promote a healthy, loving and peaceful coexistence through Earth Stewardship and Earth Gifting.

In keeping with the overall vision of Urban Primitive, Daemon and Raven are looking to find land (about 100 acres), near running water and rolling hills that is 5 miles away – in all directions – from commercial farming and pesticide use. Their search has extended outward to North of Bancroft, Northumberland County and the Ottawa Valley, with the intention of remaining in province. Their new home will also be home to their alpacas, other animals and a bee refuge – teachers and healers to help human animals reconnect with Nature. While continuing to promote Daemon’s approach to tattooing as a healing art, what he has been referring to as “The Art of Transformation” since 1992, they plan to integrate nature and the outdoors within the Urban Primitive environment by teaching people how to relax, communicate and co-create with the planet and also how to be with animals and bees.

In doing so, they plan to offer transformational and creative art workshops and deep healing retreats under the guidance of experienced medicine healers. They will also host community educational events focussing on skillsharing, sustainable living, creative expression, health and wellness and free energy.

As Urban Primitive shifts to its next stage of existence, it plans to actively bring different communities together, people with different backgrounds, belief systems and ways of living, but who all share the same vision and same intention of interconnectedness. As Daemon and Raven say goodbye to Fergus, they know this isn’t the end. It’s the beginning, a Vision Quest for seeing the connection in all things for the growing Urban Primitive family.

Visualizing animal sounds with the help of mathematics and computer programming is how engineer, Mark Fisher, created these beautiful, kaleidoscopic images from the songs of dolphins, whales, birds and insects. Raven and I turned on one of our young clients to these fractal-like images as inspiration for her tattoo soulprint of dolphin and owl energy.

“The Art of Transformation: The Elora Tarot Project” is the first episode in a mini-documentary series featuring artist Daemon Rowanchilde, his art and tattoos, client interviews, and insights into his creative process. The Elora Tarot Project featured 78 different artists each interpreting one of the 78 different cards of the deck, using their preferred style and medium. Daemon, in a unique blessing of synchronicity from the universe, was given the opportunity to work on the Star Card. Episode 1 of the “The Art of Transformation” features insights into this time-intensive painting project.

Client Spotlight for Throwback Thursday

Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie

In 1998 I tattooed Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie at my studio on Carlton Street in Toronto.  BBT asked me to renovate a few old tattoos that he wanted covered.  Angelina requested the latin words “quod me nutrit me destruit”  (what nourishes me destroys me) on her abdomen.

Billy Bob returned a second time for more renovations of old tattoos on himself and a tattoo that he gifted to Cate Blanchett’s husband, Andrew Upton. Cate came to my studio to watch while I finished her husband’s tattoo.

In 2002 Billy Bob flew Raven and I to Montreal where he was filming Levity.  He requested that I design a bird of prey incorporating his initials and the names of Angelina, their adopted son Maddox, and BBT’s two sons, Harry and Willie (named after Willie Nelson).  While in the chair, Billy Bob told me that he and Angelina fell in love in my studio.  Their tattoos sparked a whirlwind romance and marriage that put them in the media spotlight until they separated in 2003.

Amar came in today to have the flower of life layered under his previous tattoo of sacred symbols. Layering sacred healing symbols in this manner amps up the energy and tunes it almost the way you would a radio station. When doing this tattoo I thought ‘this is the way a tattoo should be.’ A collection of healing symbols that mean something to the wearer, a prayer that keeps in going, that sends loving energy inwards to the wearer as well as radiating outwards into the universe and beyond. We are one!

Just before the filming of X-Men 2, I was approached by Gordon Smith of FXSmith to come up with a tattoo design for the Nightcrawler.  Gordon’s dilemma was the challenge of making the tattoos show up on the Nightcrawler’s blue-black skin.  I suggested that an etched scarified effect, inspired by the traditional Maori moko would show up well and would give an added dimension if it were implied that the wounds were self-inflicted.

My challenge was to create a tattoo design that reflected the psychospiritual dimension of the character who was Roman Catholic and spoke High German.  My wife Raven suggested angelic sigils (i.e. signatures) that would reflect the Nightcrawler’s faith, combined with alchemical symbols that emphasized his spiritual conflict because of his outward demonic appearance and sulphurous smell.  The apparently opposing forces of spirit and form would be balanced and integrated into one harmonious expression of wholeness in the tattoo.

Initially Bryan Singer and his committee wanted only half the Nightcrawler’s face tattooed.  After he saw my drawings, however, and heard our proposal, he decided on the whole face, and, later, the upper torso and arms.  The writers had to rewrite parts of the script to incorporate the Nightcrawler’s tattoos in a new backstory of the character.

Gordon’s special effects team made casts of Alan Cumming’s face, torso and arms and I mapped the designs on the casts.  I was later told that Alan found the whole plaster cast experience claustrophobic and anxiety-inducing; the FX team had to prematurely pull it off his face. Fortunately, the plaster cast stayed in one piece.

Prior to X-Men 2, the tattoos I was asked to do for films tended to be the stereotypical gang members and criminals.  I am grateful that in X-Men 2, I was finally given the opportunity to express in a film the essence of tattoo as a spiritual healing art that realigns body and soul.

Remembering Anita

The hidden gift in diseases like breast cancer is that it can open deeper levels of consciousness in the person who is sick.  Over the course of her 29 year illness, Anita Wintels developed the ability to communicate with angels and the spirits of departed souls.  Even though her cancer was terminal, Anita wanted me to tattoo angel wings over the scars of her double mastectomy to represent the divine connection that became a huge part of her life until she passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at the age of 44.

Spiritual reality becomes more prominent in a person’s consciousness when they face their own death or that of a loved one.  However, in the case of breast cancer where the outcome is a double mastectomy, another kind of death occurs.  The resultant scars can become an emotional dead zone.  A tattoo, however, can not only transform a scar into art, the  actual experience can create a tremendous positive shift in perception and meaning.  In Anita’s words:

“Okay, so breasts, whether women like to admit it or not, are part of our sensual beings.  I was someone who didn’t think much of that - I liked my breasts, but they were just a part of me.  My husband liked them too, but obviously he loved me a lot more than my breasts, as he’s had no problem with my decision to not have reconstructive surgery.  And when I’ve worn prosthesis, he has told me he likes it better when I don’t wear the fake boobs.

You can imagine, though, that as a woman, once they are gone and you have this ‘blank’, everything kind of shifts.  All of  sudden how I thought about myself sensually and intimately changed.  Nobody (including myself) touched me there anymore until you started working on me a couple of weeks ago and the first wave of emotion hit me!  Well now that these beautiful designs are here, that has changed.  My daughter wants to touch them, I want to touch them, and just on Saturday morning, my husband rolls over and pulls the tank top I’m wearing to the side and starts tracing the design with his finger with the same look on his face as when he would look at my breasts.  I can’t even write this without tears streaming down my face.  If that’s too much information I apologize, but I kept hearing a voice telling me to tell you and voilà, your email comes in this morning.  So there it is.  Perhaps that’s part of what needs to be in your book.”

A few months before Anita’s death, I asked fashion photographer Ivan Otis (www.ivanotis.com) to take her portrait (image 1) so that I could incorporate it into a painting that would not only capture the metaphysical energy of her tattoos, but also her sensual beauty, openness and strength.

The animated gif is my recent experiment playing with different apps on my iPad under the tutelage of Seth J. Rowanwood.  This image of Anita in the heart was inspired by a very meaningful dream that she shared with me (that’s another story).  Anita you are in my heart always!  Blessed be.
