#tattoo art
In case there’s any confusion….
NO. Absolutely not.
It’s so frustrating when this happens. I understand that it’s meant as a compliment, and that many artists are ok with their work being made into tattoos. But it’s really different for tattoo artists. It takes away from what I do and from my clients who I’ve designed work for.
I make my living and a name for myself doing custom tattoos in my own unique style. That means that any artist who copies my work is stealing my intellectual property and taking away from the uniqueness that my career is built on. Oh, and no matter how good they are as a tattoo artist, no one is going to do my own work as well as me.
Besides that, my clients are paying good money and often going out of their way for a tattoo that is unique and custom. The designs may have a special meaning for them, and the idea that they are the only person in the world with that tattoo is important to them and to me. It does not feel good at all to come across a stolen tattoo of a design that you payed to have drawn for you.
If you admire an artists work and want it tattooed, ask them if it’s ok. Often it is! If it’s not, ask if they’ll do a commission you can get tattooed. If they still say no, and they, like me, are not ok with getting their work tattooed by another artist at all - then I’m sorry, you can’t get that tattoo. It’s as simple as that.
Respect artists careers and boundaries and ask permission.
