Kissa menu series: ミルクセーキ (milkshake)
In Japan, there are two types of milkshake: the American one we all know about, made with ice-cream and various flavours, and the retro showa one served in kissa and other older places, weirdly called “French style” even though it’s not French. The latter is made with milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla extract, and is nowhere as thick as standard milkshake.
My friends and I make the distinction between the two by calling them “milkshake” (pronounced in English) and “mirukuseki” (pronounced in Japan). If you go to a junkissa and see ミルクセーキ on the menu, it is definitely the milk+egg version. It also exists in cans (that look really retro) you can buy in drink machines and shops.
I feared the colour scheme for mirukuseki and lemon squash would be too similar, so I opted for a creamier yellow and a retro train/flight attendant look to make them completely different.

Kissa menu series: クリームソーダ (cream soda)
After coffee and tea, my most ordered kissa menu item is the cream soda, short for ice-cream soda, a popular showa drink that’s having a comeback right now, even outside of the kissa world. It is normally made of melon soda and vanilla ice-cream (sometimes topped by a cherry), but there are some variations (like blue Hawaii float, orange soda float, coke float, etc.). However, if the menu says クリームソーダ without any specification, it will be a melon soda float. Most kissa make their own soda from sparkling water and syrup.
It is said that Shiseido Parlor in Ginza is the first one who has served cream soda in Japan. Cream soda comes from the U.S., and was patented in 1865. However, that version included egg whites, not ice-cream. The ice-cream float (which is closer to Japan’s cream soda) was also invented in the U.S., but in 1874.
I sadly do not own any bright lime - or melon - green piece, so I made do with a bright mint dress.

Lime Green Bow X YGSF: The Vintage Brand Taking Portobello Road By Storm…In the Form of Fruit
YGSF are known for for loving a handful of things: unicorns, watermelons, almond butter, Harry Styles, rainbows, and vintage. The latter love has left us collaborating with some really alternative vintage brands. Our most recent love affair is with Lime Green Bow, their pop-up is located conveniently close to home, 201 Portobello Road to be exact!

In Celebration of #woolweek we’re taking you inside the ewe-nique Wool BnB
This week is #woolweek, kind of bizzaree to have an entire week dedicated to wool, but we have an entire day dedicated to mothers and fathers so why not?! Abbott Kinney in #hashtags: The LA Hub of Independent Fashion Boutiques and Lifestyle Cafes
If you’re visiting LA for the first time you kind of feel it’s obligatory to rent a bike, go cycling down Venice Beach and check out all the Hulk Hogans of this world pumping some iron at the outdoor gym (aka Muscle Beach). I admit we had fun doing it, but Venice Beach has become hugely touristy. What I would suggest doing is going for a little bike ride and ending up on Abbott Kinney. The LA hub of independent restaurants and cafes, as well as quirky lifestyle and fashion boutiques!

Elvis Is Back In The Building: Statement Skirts and Oversized Jumpers
A September Saturday in London, do you or do you not trust the weather forecast when it’s saying we can expect sunshine and then an hour later changes its mind? I think we do not. When this happens (which is a lot) there are only 2 solutions. 1) Dig out your blue suede shoes and become Elvis. 2) Chuck on a statement skirt and an oversized jumper (2 sizes too big to be specific.)

Spicy Outerwear: How To Maintain Maximalism Whilst Keeping Warm This Winter
So apparently last night was the coldest of the year, which I thoroughly believe seeing as I spent most of my time outdoors repeating through chattering teeth, “I can’t feel my toes” (as if it would help make the situation any better.) The problem I face this time of year is maintaining the maximalism element to my outfits whilst keeping warm. What’s the point in wearing a sassy shirt if you’re going to spend the entire day drowned in a black puffa jacket?! The solution is simple…resort to spicy outerwear!
