Train of Tomorrow
In April 1948, the future of railroad travel pulled into Minnesota. As part of a nationwide tour, General Motors’ Train of Tomorrow arrived in the Twin Cities carrying 125 local media and railroad dignitaries who had boarded the train in Albert Lea. The train was on display at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds from April 22 to 26. Mayors of both Minneapolis and St. Paul proclaimed April 22 as “Train of Tomorrow Day” and thousands of local residents toured the train during its four-day stop.
What visitors saw in their tour was a dream of elegant train travel to come. After four years of war, General Motors concluded that travelers would be ready to journey in luxury. Air conditioning, florescent lighting, nylon upholstery, and a phone that could call home from the train were just a few of the amenities. Above all this, the Train of Tomorrow offered unparalleled views, thanks to its “astra domes” – side and ceiling windows and seating raised above the sides of the train cars.
