#rent the musical
Its Rent Month! And what better way to start off with Tick Tick BOOM !!
Here I am at 3 in the morning watching Rent, thinking to myself “god, I hope Angel doesn’t die” like he doesn’t every time I watch it. Doesn’t mean I’m gonna cry any less tho.
The RENT fandom rises from the ashes
Setting an alarm for reasons…
Musical Theatre Tropes/Things I Never Get Tired Of
- The Runaway New Yorker - mc wants to leave NYC because they feel like they aren’t achieving anything there. Like a typical New Yorker, they want to leave for someplace warm and sunny (probably Santa Fe). They almost leave when they lose hope, but then they realize that their home is in New York City with their friends-turned-family.
Ex.Usnavi(In The Heights),Jack Kelly(Newsies),Mark, Roger, Angel, and Collins (Rent)
- Kickass Female Trio - probably have a song where they sing about how powerful they are and how everyone bows down to them. Adored by the whole fandom. They also have this iconic pose that everyone can recognize. Also have a distinct colour palette among their outfits. The leader is the most powerful, popular, and feared of them all and is in the center of their pose & the main singer of their song. She’s somehow defeated in a later part of Act 1. The second-in-commandtakes over for the leader and is at her right. The innocent sidekick is at the leader’s left & she’s very youthful and childlike. Has yellow somewhere in her outfit. She’s likely to be an alto.
Ex.Angelica(leader),Eliza(2nd-I-C),andPeggy(IS) - the Schuyler Sisters (Hamilton) | H. Chandler (leader), H. Duke (2nd-I-C), H. McNamara (IS) - the Heathers(Heathers) | Regina(leader),Gretchen(2nd-I-C),Karen (IS) - the Plastics(Mean Girls)
- The Seductress Song - hot young woman breaks into lead male’s house in her own song where she belts some mad vocals and then flirts with him cause she wants him.
Ex.Mimi Marquez - Out Tonight(Rent),Maria Reynolds - Say No To This(Hamilton),Veronica Sawyer - Dead Girl Walking(Heathers)
- The “My Life Sucks and I’m Struggling Because I’m Poor and I Have To Work and I’m Too Young For That BS, but life goes on” song - It’s probably a bunch of oppressed New Yorkers singing that.
Ex.In The Heights(In The Heights),Carrying The Banner(Newsies),It’s A Hard-Knock Life(Annie),Rent(Rent)
- The romance between the Girl Who Has It All and the Boy Who Has Nothing trope - also self-explanatory. The girl’s father is probably wealthy or respected.
Ex.Alexander & Eliza(Hamilton),Jack & Katherine(Newsies),Nina & Benny(In The Heights)
- The Silly Little Banter Between Two Love Interests song - the two characters are lowkey into one another, but they’re like, fighting-flirting.
Ex. I Never Planned On You (Don’t Come A-Knocking)(Newsies),Light My Candle(RENT),Anything You Can Do(Annie Get Your Gun)
- The “Let’s Have Some Fun In The City!” song - super upbeat instrumentals and ensemble, the characters are exploring the city and having fun.
Ex.When You’re Home(In The Heights),One Short Day(Wicked),The Schuyler Sisters(Hamilton)
- The Badass Revolution Song - the song that makes you want to take down capitalism and scream something at the top of your lungs. take down the oppressors. the poor kids are taking over now.
Ex.The World Will Know(Newsies),One Day More (Les Misérables),My Shot(Hamilton),Yorktown(Hamilton),Defying Gravity(Wicked)
There’s probably more to add.
a concept: a Broadway musical production held in the Nederlander Theatre in West 41st St., Manhattan about a group of New Yorkers living in the slums of Manhattan, who protest against this guy - who cares deeply about one of the female leads - and his capitalist agenda, which is to sell something that will make the characters more broke than they already are. The main character is an artist who’s full of angst and nearly runs off to Santa Fe, but then realizes that their home is in New York. The characters also sing a song about their New York ideals while dancing on a table in a restaurant in an upbeat number. It’s also set at the end of a decade.
But like,,, what’s it called?
broadway musicals with new york city aesthetic
ANNIE: walking down fifth avenue, candy shops, rockefeller center, fifth avenue diamonds, window shopping, old-fashioned radioes, pennies, brass doorknobs, new york pizza, the chrysler building, greenwich village, soho, lots and lots of money, the city at one a.m., times square, taxi cabs, jazz music, broadway musicals, the curiousity you feel as you explore the city, getting lost, the glow of the city at night, staring up at the skyscrapers in awe as you walk past, wanting to be apart of new york, the rides in coney island, adrenaline, a young girl’s laughter, mary jane shoes, cute dolls, giggles, the state of pure happiness.
NEWSIES: manhattan at dawn before rush hour, old-fashioned cigars, freshly-printed papers, broadway streets, riding a bike or strolling through central park, paintings sold on the sidewalk, street performers, ordering chinese food when you’re too lazy to cook, the brooklyn bridge, dirty laundry, worn-out leather shoes, the manhattan skyline, wall street, grand central station, the loud noises of the city like cars or the chatter of people, folding your pizza, walking around with friends, getting annoyed with tourists who walk too slow, rain, traffic, the queensboro bridge, the essence of a handsome teenage boy, hearts racing in excitement, cheering for the sake of cheering, brooklyn rainbow bagels, always throwing yourself into the crowd, the st. patricks cathedral, the new york times.
HAMILTON: marble floors, black coffee, the subway at rush hour in the morning, scattered papers, ink stains on shirts, the tulips in bryant park, cold wind attacking your face in spring, the new york public library (which was funded by the real alexander hamilton), the battery park, a small argument that turns into a shouting match, passersby stopping what they’re doing to stare which is a rare thing new yorkers do, shakespeare plays, the statue of liberty and ellis island, the border between the north shore and south shore, bronze statues, the manhattan bridge, chrysler street, nyu students, postcards, stamps, long written letters, those broadway performers who never get lead roles but you can’t help but notice them in the ensemble.
RENT: walking the streets with no money on you, lovers on a date in central park, a busy street with people walking briskly, graffiti on the subway, the underprivileged new yorkers you don’t notice who’re trying to get by, the silver surfer, getting your paycheck and feeling satisfied, withering flowers, little shoebox apartments, the view from the rainbow room and realising that you’re living an small life in a big city with so many opportunities, cursing out the new york building, walking home after a long day, laughing so hard your sides hurt, a movie night at home with your best friends, nightclubs, indie bands, small rock concert venues, the feeling of freedom, bagels, judging people by their shoes, walking fast, metrocards, small restaurants and cafés, the crazy lights and colors of times square that keep changing.
IN THE HEIGHTS (update): bodega shops, the george washington bridge, people speaking their native language, totally different people with totally different lives riding the same subway car, looking at those fancy rich people and wishing you had that life, a sunset view of the manhattan skyline, the sound of cars honking at each other, the smoke that rises from underground kitchens, the summer heat, central park when it’s sunny, going to manhattan, people! of! color! working! hard! as! hell! (because let’s be honest, they have it rough), living in the unpopular areas of nyc, going to the rich areas even though you aren’t rich, mexican food, local bakeries, (immigrants - we get the job done!), distant shouting, the smell of food in the air, originality, preserverance, street smarts, switching between languages, loving your family, growing up alongside your friends, looking out for your neighbours, being crammed into a small world, washington heights.
