The amazing Sarracenia minor is my personal favorite species of American pitcher plant. The pitchers are generally under 14″ tall, but what they lack in size, they make up for with expertly designed traps. This species of pitcher plant utilizes translucent-white patches of tissue to create “windows”, which, when combined with the downward pointing lid covering the pitcher mouth, effectively disorientate insects unlucky enough to have entered. This in turn tricks insects into thinking the back of the pitchers are the quickest way to freedom, when in reality, they are only becoming more trapped. Sarracenia minor’s “windows” offer bugs a glimmer of hope, but ultimately guarantee the plant a steady meal!

Sarraceniaxexcellens, a naturally occurring American Pitcher Plant hybrid. Plants like this can be found in the southern US swamps and savannas. 

Sarracenia flava v.ornata, a handsome and well decorated American pitcher plant native to the Gulf of Mexico.

Can you ever have too many? (I certainly hope not since there’s like a million more behind me too!)

It’s going to be another hot day in California with temperatures in the 90’s! The Sarracenia love it, as long as we keep them well watered.

The rim of this Sarracenia leucophylla has been delicately lined with a soft pink.

This large, sunset colored Sarracenia caught my eye this morning. Standout shape and form, large size and subtle yet eye catching coloration; one of my new favorites!

While it certainly looks like a Sarracenia, psittacina does stand out amongst its brothers and sisters for its wonderfully charismatic traps and low rosettes.

The first rain has fallen and it makes all the Sarracenia outside look so lovely!

Known for its gorgeous, luminescent, white pitchers, Sarracenia leucophylla sends up its most awe inspiring pitchers in autumn.

Sarracenia purpurea introduced and thriving in the bogs in Great Britain.

These Sarracenia are gigantic! It’s fun watering the pools and lagoons out back because you find monsters like these.

Sarracenia are carnivorous pitcher plants, grown for their unique modified leaves rather than for their flowers. Carnivory and proto-carnivory are some of the most perplexing and intriguing evolutions in the botanical realm, often presenting unique habitats for other animals and microbiota. From a Nepenthes which enjoy meals of shrew scat to a Utricularia which is partially herbivorous, they excite the imagination. It ought to come as no surprise that Sarracenia blossoms would be quite strange as well, with a peculiar rearrangement of its flower structures designed to force a pollinating insect into navigating a maze in order to get nectar/pollen rewards and exit the flower. This flower is from a complex hybrid of incompletely known heritage, but is pretty typical for flowers of this genus.
