The amazing Sarracenia minor is my personal favorite species of American pitcher plant. The pitchers are generally under 14″ tall, but what they lack in size, they make up for with expertly designed traps. This species of pitcher plant utilizes translucent-white patches of tissue to create “windows”, which, when combined with the downward pointing lid covering the pitcher mouth, effectively disorientate insects unlucky enough to have entered. This in turn tricks insects into thinking the back of the pitchers are the quickest way to freedom, when in reality, they are only becoming more trapped. Sarracenia minor’s “windows” offer bugs a glimmer of hope, but ultimately guarantee the plant a steady meal!

Nepenthes maxima (m) x truncata(D) bred by Exotica Plants in Australia. Despite their general reputation as “hard to grow”, Nepenthespitcher plants can often be grown outdoors year-round in most frost-free climates.

Nepenthes truncata in its natural habitat, Mindanao the Philippines. (my last mandarin was being used as the scale).
It’s going to be another hot day in California with temperatures in the 90’s! The Sarracenia love it, as long as we keep them well watered.

Cephalotus have a unique feature; on the interior of the trap is a bright, white, slippery collar baited with nectar. Insects hanging on the downward curving teeth attempting to get a taste of the nectar will slip and fall. Once inside, they cannot bypass the funnel shaped collar to get back out.

This large, sunset colored Sarracenia caught my eye this morning. Standout shape and form, large size and subtle yet eye catching coloration; one of my new favorites!

While it certainly looks like a Sarracenia, psittacina does stand out amongst its brothers and sisters for its wonderfully charismatic traps and low rosettes.

This Nepenthes densiflora x truncata has so many nice qualities; lovely deep red color, pixelated red and green spots, shiny, undulating peristome, great size. But my favorite is the roguish lid that seems to be waving.
