Flying Comfort

Blurb: shawn and his assistant y/n are flying with the whole team to the next destination on the tour and y/n is still not over her flying fear.

Although i had been flying around with Shawn and the team for a while now, i was definitely not used to flying a single bit. I began my internship as their assistant about a year ago, and now they had employed me basically full time. I travelled with them to every show, met with them at every recording session and even went out the dinner with them. I had become very familiar with everyone, but the flying wasn’t quite so familiar yet. Even though I’d been flying basically every few days for the past month and a half.

Today’s flight was a very late one, take off at around 2:30am, I hated night flights with a passion. It made me undeniably tired which was frustrating because it is basically impossible to sleep on the death trap they call planes. I slung my backpack on my shoulder as the team began to move to board the plane, I knew it wasn’t a long flight, only about 5 hours but the anxiety still bubbled in my stomach.

“Feeling okay?” asked Andrew, noticing the hesitance in my walk and the twiddling of my hands.

“Yeah, I’m all good,” I responded flashing him a toothy smile, hopefully deflecting any further questions. As soon as we were on the plane, Shawn sat in the window seat next to Andrew and then in the isle seat was me. Weirdly, take off and landing was bareable, it was planned and of course it would be bumpy but turbulence, nope. Unpredictable, uncomfortable and a tad scary if you ask me. Shawn looked over and smiled at me.

“You excited?” He grinned, I’m guessing he meant about going to a new place but my sarcasm slipped out.

“Thrilled!” I instantly regretted the tone but his reply was chirpy and i figured he didn’t notice. Oblivious. I loved working with Shawn, he was kind and passionate and sweet. He always without fail thanked me for everything I did, even though it was my job. He always opened doors for me, offered me a drink or snack when we were at his condo writing and smiled at me. Plus he was undeniably attractive. Like wow, what a job this was. Not going to lie, we were occasionally very flirty with each other, which I’m definitely complaining about.

A few hours into the flight the seatbelt sign beeped on and the flight attendants sat down, oh god that was the most unsettling sight.

“Passengers please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts, we are experiencing slight turbulence, the cabin crew has been asked to sit but we remind you not to worry, thank you”

I quickly fumbled to tighten my seatbelt . Looking around I noticed Shawn listening to music contently staring at the map on the small screen and Andrew fixated on a movie. I took a few deeps breaths as the plane jolted and shook, which only caused me to gripp the arm rests and close my eyes. Fear was shooting through my body like bullets, causing knots in my stomach and a tightness in my chest. I tried to imagine I was on a roller coaster, I liked those and they felt the same as this right ? Not really. Roller coasters werent 30’000 feet in the air and floating over an ocean dominated by cruel unforgiving waves. Ugh I was only making this whole thing worse, now i was feeling panicked, I could feel pain in my hands from holding so tight and a dull ache behind my eyes.

A warmth touches the top of my hand, and my headphone was pulled out my ear.

“Hey, you okay?” it was Shawn. I opened my eyes and turned my face towards him. He gave me a soft smile and I became suddenly aware his hand on mine. All I could do was nod, not because I was shocked at his gesture but because the turbulence was so much worse now. A few seats behind us one of the overhead storage doors banged open and made me jump, I squeezed my eyes shut and took a sharp breath in.

“Hey hey look at me,” Shawn had now slipped his hand into mine, blocking my grip from the arm rest. “It’s okay, it’s just a bit of wind that’s all, I got you,” his words were gentle and soft, as if too harsh a tone would shatter me completely.

“I hate this.”

“I know, but don’t worry, it’ll be over soon, just relax and rest your head on me,” he offered, lying back in the seat, which he had swapped with Andrew secretly. I leant back and rested my head on his shoulder. With every bump he held my hand tighter and after a while he began rubbing circles on the back of my hand.

When the seatbelt sign beeped off and the cabin crew stood I was completely calm and even drifting into a sleep. I lifted my head to whisper in his ear.

“Thank you.” A small smile graced his lips and he looked down at me with glistening brown eyes.

“Anytime y/n.”
