When am I going to get my obligatory Sonic Learns to Swim scene? I mean, the kid almost drowned, so I would hope the next movie takes care of that, because the idea lives rent free in my head.
It should be a really cute moment too, right? The idea of his parents teaching him how to swim while his two new brothers cheer in the background. It sounds super sweet and wholesome, doesn’t it?
WRONG.
That shit is going to be like watching a Roman Gladiator battle and it nothing short of chaos incarnate as Tom paddles violently in the water, holding onto Sonic’s legs as Sonic holds onto the dock with every last shred of strength in his body.
“BETRAYAL,” he screeches, as Knuckles pries his fingers off of the dock. “I SAVE YOU, AND THIS IS YOUR PAYMENT.”
“This is for your own good, brother,” Knuckles says solemnly.
“SONIC WE’RE IN THE SHALLOW PART,” Tom screams over Tails wailing in the background about how his new big brother is being murdered. “LET GO!”
“MY OWN FATHER HATH FORSAKEN ME,” sobs Sonic. “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS!”
“Sonic just let- DID YOU JUST LICK ME?”
Maddie eventually needs to jump in to wrench him off. But that’s a whole other issue in itself, which ends in Maddie holding a flailing, sparking child above the water, screaming at the top of her lungs about how “MOMMY WON’T LET YOU DIE BUT I SWEAR TO GOD SONIC IF YOU ELECTROCUTE ME YOU’RE GROUNDED FOR A YEAR.”
“TELL HIM, MADDIE,” shouts Tom.
Meanwhile, Tails finally gains enough bravery to grab at a floating toy off the dock. “FOR SONIIIIIIIIC,” he screeches between his tears, before beating Tom across the head with a pool noodle.
This is my dream. No I don’t take criticism.
The mental image of Sonic clinging to Maddie for dear life and just going “ma. Ma. MA I DIDN’T GIVE UP THE POWER OF A GOLDEN GOD JUST TO END UP HERE”*points to the innocent looking pool toy* “it’s gonna pop the second i move AND THEN IM DONE FOR.” They see he sorta has a point (HA!), so they bundle him up in one of those heavy duty life jackets instead. But it’s the one used for toddlers where he’s floating on his back and has pictures of frogs printed on it.
Knuckles can swim just fine and likes to race Donudad and Momaddie all the time. He’s trying to teach Ozzie to swim underwater for long periods of time. The races are one of the only ways to get Sonic in the water cause then he just runs across and if he’s feeling confident he’ll let himself lose momentum and float back up with his life jacket. Knuckles likes sitting at the bottom of the lake and he eventually gets Tails into doing it by make it a whole contest to see who can float back up the slowest and hold their breath the longest.
This one is a bit shorter, but here’s the prequel comic! Here we see about a month after sonic 1 takes place, and the wachowski parents have a little talk while their kid sleeps. Tom’s ecstatic sonic finally trusts him enough to fall asleep on him :)
I got to see the movie and overall, I really liked it.
The bond between Sonic and Tails is adorable, which was one of my biggest points of interest. I also loved the general familiar bond and the characters’ characterisation, plus the fighting scenes.
However I have some nitpicks and here I’ll go a tiny bit into some spoilers, but nothing heavy.
One of the biggest things I’m a bit iffy about is that despite the premise, between the post-credit scene of the first movie, the logo and the general initial promotion and the fact it introduced the two characters to each other… I think it didn’t focus on Tails enough. Tails develops as character and does many useful things, his inventions saved the group more than once, but in terms of screentime and relevance in his portrayal… he lacked a bit, which is something I really wished wouldn’t happen.
Sonic and Tails’ bond is fantastic and I loved all their bonding scenes (included the dancing match), but I think the wedding showdown or the build-up for it could have been reduced easily in favor of more moments between the two to see them bonding. For two characters who are supposed to consider each other close as brothers, to have a special partnership like no others, it didn’t feel like there was enough a focus in the movie, which I think should have been. Sure we have more things coming to see it but if we didn’t it would have left their bond a bit vague and up to the air compared to the depth it’s supposed to has. It was one of the things that worried me most when I discovered Knuckles would be in the movie and related a lot to the plot. I thought his plotline would overshadow Tails and his bond with Sonic and to be honest, it didn’t that much. Knuckles fits very well in the movie, it’s just that compared to Tails’ plot, he seems much more a bigger focus. It could have easily been fixed with less focus on the humans’ side and more on the two “brothers”. Cut out a bit of the pre-wedding moments, speed up the showdown (they could even have showed Sonic trying more to wake up Tails while they’re captured and Tom talking to him about it, observing how Sonic is so concerned about a creature his father just met. Seeing how much he cares). Cut a bit Eggman’s sidekick scenes even to show more Sonic and Tails moments where they share similar passions etc…
It’s kind of the same for Tails’ backstory. He was the only one who didn’t get a proper flashback of his past and was just lightly addressed, even if the dancing battle implied what he had been through was much more terrible than addressed. I hope this will be fixed with the next movie(s?) and the spin-offs, because I understand animating new characters (the bullies) could be troublesome additional work, but for s main character like him it would have been really important and needed. Tails has a lot of room for more development both as character and as relationship with Sonic and there’s room to see more about his past. We could see so much more and I really hope we will, because otherwise it would be a big lack that once again hit the same character of the brand in more than one universe.
I also didn’t love the humour of the movie, the comedic scenes, aside a few. But they didn’t bother me a lot.
Going back to what I liked, I’ll focus again on Tails and Sonic because their moments were really beautiful. How Sonic wanted Tails by his side from the start and encouraged him, how in synch they were in the dance, how Sonic is just “woah cool” when Tails imply he looked a bit too much into his life… I LOVED the fireplace scene, even if I wish we saw an actual flashback and their talk lasted more. But seeing Sonic cover Tails like that and the fox back at him with his tails was so heartwarming! Just like I adored the angst when Tails got hurt and Sonic more than once was super worried and begged him to wake up, or him shouting at the GUN agents about his friend being hurt and needing help.
Kinda sad from then we didn’t get more moments specifically between the two, even in the end. The hug between Tails, Sonic, Tom and Maddie was super cute but not really just… between those two.
Overall, very cute movie, just wished for more Tails and more of his and Sonic’s brotherly scenes.

Ever since I saw the sequel for the first time, I noticed a lot of things that happened there that happened as well in the first movie. Now that I’ve seen the movie three times in theaters, I finally finished this list I’ve been working on since the first time I saw it.

The AU’s about Sonic becoming a human on Earth as a result of the rings, which in this AU turn you into the dominant species of the planet they go up once they go through the portal. After seeing the original post by @the-brucest-fan “Blue Speedster’s Paradise” I couldn’t resisted drawing their designs for the Sonic Movie Human Disguise AU of Sonic, Tails & Knuckles, I even added a little dialogue along with it.
I have this strange belief that while Sonic and Knuckles are forthright with their feelings and actions, which lead to louder fights and squabbles between them.
But not Tails.
Tails is quieter. And therefore more dangerous.
If Sonic or Knuckles even tried to make fun of him, Tails wouldn’t react at all.
No, this is a kid that would wait 3-5 business days and then unveil a tri-board titled “Why My Brothers are Butt Faced Losers” and pull out every single receipt he’s got, whipping out flashcards like, “Reason 1: Because Knuckles broke Mom’s favorite vase and blamed it on Ozzie and cried for an hour afterwards about being dishonorable. Reason 2: Because Sonic steals Dad’s snacks when he’s not home” just absolutely ticking off items watching his brothers shrink farther and farther down into their skin under the gaze of their now very knowledgable parents, Tails just standing there like;
He just has all the flashcards listed out from one corner of the wall to the other and lists out EVERYTHING that happened while looking like someone who has been on a case chasing down a suspect while he knows deep down that this revenge plot is fully working:

And what ensues is a long winded conversation about how water damage is a serious issue and should he wish to have a jacuzzi of mountain dew he can’t have it in the living room for pete’s sake.
