the entitlement and incivility i see in some of these posts is mindblowing to me.

did you go to film school? chances are, probably not.

you know who did? shannon messenger. 

messenger knows how the film industry works and this series is her everything. this is a major, LITERAL once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. shannon knows what she’s doing. she played her cards well. i mean, imagine writing a book that is good enough for you to get approached (not have to approach, no. to GET APPROACHED) by fucking disney, the biggest entertainment company in the world, and batman.

please, take a moment to think about how many children and teens and young adults and, yes, adults will come to love this movie. 

think of the children who can only be calmed when their parents put on the KOTLC movie during the roadtrip. think of the teens who will get sad and run to this movie as an object of comfort during the rough times. think of the young adults who will share it with their family or friends or write heartfelt posts about it on the internet because it hit something in them they hadn’t felt in awhile. think of the adults who will watch it over and over because they find it to be fascinating, even if it’s classified as youth media.

i just… take a moment to think about how many lives this can touch. the book series is incredible - and that’s why it’s deserving of a movie and why shannon was approached. this is an opportunity to spread comfort and love and entertainment to more humans. it may end up a little inaccurate to the book, i get that. and yes, it probably will not fit the idea in your head! because this movie is not based off of yourheadcanons and your idea of the universe, but rather disney’s.

truly, no film adaptation has been a smash hit with the book fandom. no film adaption has gotten everything right - and they never will. there is not enough time in a film to indulge in each and every scene we see in the books. so expect some rough plot or some “missing” scenes and such. because it will come to pass.

and when it does, instead of the small details, think about the humans experiencing this for the first time. think about the children who become obsessed with a new storyline and all they can talk about is sophie foster for five weeks. think about the teens who want to draw and write and create for this new story. think about the young adults theorizing what could happen next, googling to see if there’s a sequel in the works. think about the adults trying out the books and gifting the books to the people around them.

this is huge and far beyond the fandom as we are right now. this is an installment to our story - i beg of you to look at the love it can produce, the lives it can touch, and the hearts it can change.

headcanon that sophie really likes to play chess and solitaire (depending on if she has a partner of course) because it gives her something to focus on other than the thoughts penetrating her brain. for some reason, whenever she’s playing her own thoughts become louder and it’s easier to drown out the others. of course, when she was playing chess with a human it was hard not to cheat by hearing their thoughts, but it was always kinda fun to cheat anyway and strategize her way around their moves and throw them off.

after coming to the lost cities, she often plays solitaire when she needs to keep her mind off of something because it takes her entire amount of concentration. sometimes she’ll be in study hall or at the dinner table and she’ll pull out a deck of cards nobody knew she had, and she’ll just start playing. nobody understands the rules, but dex and keefe picked up on some of the patterns, and constantly study her playing.

she taught dex how to play chess one day in study hall (which was much easier because she could just show him the gameplay rules by transmitting images to him) and soon enough they began playing all the time. so often that their friends would just watch them play. often times sophie would manage to bring the board to school so they could play during study hall or when she was recovering in the healing center and it’s just about the one thing sophie looks forward to in her day. she’d never played against someone who matched her level of strategy, and it was nice to finally have a challege. eventually, the rest of the group wanted to learn as well, which lead to a whole tournament to see who the best chess player was among them. (wylie pretended not to be interested but he couldnt pass up a chance to play against sophie, which meant stina wanted to play so she wouldnt be the only member of team valiant not included, then marella joined in so she could beat stina, and marica joined so she could beat wylie - can you see how far this cycle reaches?)

• Sophie has Tourette syndrome, meaning she makes noises and movements which she can’t control because of a neurological condition in the brain. These repetitive phrases or movements are called “tics”.
• She has a variety of tics, both vocal and physical.
• One of her vocal tics at a young age was “suldreen” and she could never figure out why she kept repeating it. Her parents found it odd, too, because they’d never uttered “suldreen” around her - she’d just been blabbering it since birth. Her dad calls her “Soybean” because of it (and Sophie despises that nickname).
• Sophie has a few tics that are in English, from the time she spent in a human environment. 
• For example: Sophie has a tic that’s an obscure line from Sherlock because her human mom and dad used to watch the show frequently and they loved it, so it’s emblazoned in her mind. In the first episode, Sherlock tries to convince a police officer that he’s in shock because he’s got a blanket, so he can’t answer questions in an interrogation.So, Sophie ticcing, “I’m in shock! I’ve got a blanket!” over and over again. (She does an impersonation of his british accent and everything).
• Sophie with a cursing tic, but it’s in English so no one knows what she’s saying and by god is she glad.
• OR, alternatively, once she manifests as a polyglot, it’s a curse in trollish or ogre or a different language and only one of her bodyguards gets it and they’re thrown off guard by it.
• She’s being interrogated by the Council during a Tribunal or something of the sort, and out of nowhere she yells, “FUCK” and immediately turns red with embarrassment, but the Council is just confused as hell and tries to move forward-
• Sophie develops a “no reason to worry!” tic. Alden thinks it’s precious and flattering. Sophie finds it anything but. (Especially since her brain makes it a point to impersonate his heavy accent when she does it).
• After a long time with Silveny, she developed a tic where she just shouts Keefe’s name. Keefe thinks it’s the greatest thing in the world, and makes it a point to respond even if he knows she’s just ticcing.
• “Yes, Miss F?”
• “Shut up, you know I’m not talking to you.”
• Sophie getting a vocal tic of a food.. and it’s super random, like, “ripplepuff”. And she keeps ticcing and she doesn’t know why she even developed that because ripplepuffs aren’t that amazing to her - it’s not like they’re her favourites or anything, but her brain just decided “ooh, new tic!”. 
• Fitz hears her repeating it and one day brings her a little tin and says he has a surprise.. and when she opens it she starts giggling and her brain takes hold and she tics again and again and they’re both smiley and giggly-
• She ends up ticcing so much from the excitement that she reacts with physical tics and smashes them in with her hands or chucks them across the room.
• Speaking of physical tics: a common physical tic that Sophie has always had is facial grimacing. She scrunches up her entire face and her eyes close tight and her shoulders temporarily lift before she’s released and she returns to relaxed position.
• Keefe (lovingly) calls it her Scrunchy Face.
• (It was originally “Grumpy Face” but then Keefe realized that might not make her feel too good and he wants her to know he’s not making fun of her for doing something completely normal. He just finds it cute!)
• Sophie’s most common response to stress is plucking at her eyelashes. And Sophie is stressed a lot, so she tends to repeat the action. She does it so often that one day her brain is like, “haha!! new tic!!”. Not only that, but it spreads to her eyebrows and soon she’s plucking and prodding and ugh, she’s so frustrated because her eyebrows are uneven. (She has to take elixirs to make the hair grow back faster).
• When she starts wearing gloves after manifesting as an Enhancer, it’s a texture she has to get used to, so she develops a tic where she clenches her fists super hard.
• That one can really hurt at times because her hand won’t unclench and her nails dig into her palm-
• Sophie getting tics when she’s flustered… Yeah, she tics super hard around Keefe and Fitz. She hopes nobody notices.
• Sophie has a tic that’s her scrunching up her nose and squeezing her eyes shut and making a tiny sound… honestly sounds a little bit like she’s trying to fake a sneeze.Her shoulders also shrug when she does this.
• Sophie ticcing when she meets the alicorn babies for the first time because she’s so happy they’re alive and well.Andwow, they’re so pretty and cute. Her tics are all coming out at once though and she’s shrugging and scrunching her face and squeezing her eyes closed and her head jolts to the side every now and then and she’s shivering and she keeps yelling different vocal tics that have nothing to do with the situation.
• Sophie getting a tic that’s her making popping sounds with her mouth.
• Or blowing raspberries.
• Spoiler alert: this one does not come in handy when she’s using a straw. There have been quite a few times where she’s ticced and blown into the straw, so her drink violently bubbles and splashes over. (It’s easier for her to leave her cup on the table and drink through a straw, though, as opposed to picking it up and risking throwing it on the ground).
• Sophie getting tics in the middle of conversation and she gets embarrassed because they keep interrupting her, which makes her reach the conclusion a bit slower. (Obviously nobody minds, however).
• All this being said, tourettes is not something that’s always light and happy - it’s not constantly a cute, smiley thing where she simply makes funny sounds or funny movements. It affects her life and can make her miserable.
• One of her tics is holding her breath. This makes for obvious breathing difficulties. She sucks in her breath and won’t exhale for extended periods of time and she can’t do anything to make it stop, which makes her panic-y (and that doesn’t help the situation anymore). She likes someone to be there to work her through it.
• Most of the time it’s Grady and Edaline, but if they’re not home and it happens, her bodyguards are always willing to help lay her down on her back and hold her hands as she goes through it. And we all know the rest of her friends are also extremely willing to help!
• Just think about Fitz and Keefe on either side of her, holding her hands. Fitz is transmitting to her, assuring her she’s fine and she’ll be through it soon enough… Keefe monitoring her emotional state sending her blue breezes in hopes to help keep her calm…
• Sophie getting frustrated because she gets very emotional when the adults or authoritative figures in her life won’t listen to her/don’t trust her and she tries to speak to them, but they keep brushing her off and she keeps ticcing as she’s trying to talk because she’s getting so emotional and her tics keep getting more intense and frequent and she’s trying her best to keep her cool and keep pushing through and trying not to cry because she doesn’t want them to see her like some kid that can’t control herself (even though that’s stupid because you can’t control tics, but she still feels self conscious about the way she’s seen).
• Sophie trying to bake with her parents and accidentally getting batter everywhere because she couldn’t keep from ticcing. She feels really bad because half of it is on the floor for them to clean up and they had to take some utensils out of her reach,but Edaline and Grady don’t mind; they’re just happy to spend time with her. (Sophie still feels bad).
• Sophie getting really nervous before going to sleep because the lights are out and she generally just has a hard time sleeping and feeling safe at night so her anxiety starts to rev up which makes her tics go haywire and she’s ticcing so much that it’s hard to settle down so she hails Dex or transmits to Fitz-
• Sophie also has a tic where she hits herself or the things around her, so she gets a lot of bruises from that. She also destroys a lot of things with it, which makes her sad.
• For example: Sophie accidentally ticcing and hitting her friends and she feels so horrible and keeps apologizing because she could just hear the echo of the slap, but they hold onto her hands and promise that it’s okay, they know she didn’t mean to.
• Sophie being told to be quiet and sit still in detention, but she can’t and the mentor doesn’t know and snaps at her and Keefe stands up for her like, “Dude, she can’t stay quiet, let her breathe.”
• It would make it so much harder to walk around if her tics got intense because she can’t control them and sometimes the movements are jarring and throw her off-balance. That’s why she’s labeled “clumsy” by most people- and she hatesit.
• Sophie’s PTSD, Anxiety, and Tourettes generally like to work hand in hand. Say Sophie gets very anxious and emotional at the sight, feel, or thought of fire. Since she’s so emotional from the trigger, she’ll tic more, and the high-intensity moment might trigger a tic attack. 
• These can last from a range of minutes to hours.
• Her tic attacks can not only include intense bursts of ticcing, many times without pause in between, but they can also include muscle tension and changing in breathing. Her joints usually stiffen and burn, and her breathing can either pick up speed or go drop to a slower, concerning rate. It’s a very uncomfortable place for Sophie to be stuck in.
• Sophie panicking after a Neverseen encounter and she has a tic attack. 
• Elwin just… holds her. He tries to keep her from hitting herself too much or bringing any more bodily harm.
• Sophie ticcing while she’s abducted and restrained in the first book, but because she’s restrained and not able to really move, it makes her joints all achy and stiff and it burns and her interrogators get more and more aggressive in their handling of her because she isn’t answering (she’s ticcing so much that it’s difficult) and she won’t sit still-
• Sophie trying her hardest when Mr. Forkle picks her and Dex up to not tic and hold on to Dex so that Mr. Forkle doesn’t set him down.
• Sophie getting a really intense tic attack when she’s forced to keep that circlet on her in Everblaze. She can’t stop ticcing and it’s hurting her head and she’s sobbing and begging for a sedative because she doesn’t want to be awake.
• Sophie having to be lulled into sleep by Silveny throughout most of her recovery in Flashback, because if she tics too much, she sets back all the progress she’s made on healing her arm.
• (UNLOCKED SPOILERS) Amidst the struggle, however, there is triumph, too. The first time she doesn’t trigger a tic attack at the feeling and sight of fire is during Unlocked when she sets the warehouse on fire. Even though everyone is harsh with her about it afterwards, Sandor makes it a point to mention to the adults that heisvery proud of her, in a way, because he didn’t even have to carry her out of there like he usually does when she’s around fire and is triggered - she walked out of there on her own.

i just finished the guide since my book finally came and i am so unbelievably impressed

say what you will about laura but when im reading this book i put aside everything else and focus only on the book, and i really really loved the art. the ones i definitely liked most are the fosters, the songs, and the council. something about the huge full spread rendering of the councillors just enthralled me. 

and yeah. tam’s old haircut. not saying i dont like the bangs but wow he can really pull anything off

i really enjoyed reading the registry files. 1: keefe’s was absolutely hilarious. there was nothing in that file that was left untouched, and that leads to so many hilarious comments.

dex’s file was amazing, mostly because of that one section we all know, the one he redacted hardcore. it’s amazing

the amount of people who have spyballs is almost scary. what’s scarier is who was denied. how did alden manage that? i would imagine that it was a result of bronte not exactly being his biggest fan

the adults have some interesting files. sounds like edaline was working on something huuuuuge, as was grady, and they probably have no clue what either of them was working on. i really hope we get to know what those assignments were 

kenric’s memorial page had me tearing up so bad. not gonna lie, i still think he’s a black man because that’s what i thought for like. the first four years of me reading this series, and my mental picture isn’t gonna be able to be replaced just because of these pictures. im incapable of changing my mind

i just wanna say. seeing dex in The Twin just. really emphasized the crush i have on him. it’s getting worse. i have to constantly remind myself that he’s not real. he just looks so huggable. 

dont even get me started on keefe’s memory narration. that just… that gave me so many fic ideas it’s not even funny. and the way he cut off his sentence of “I’d better take a break, before I write something really embarrassing. Like how I’m pretty sure I’m-”

this memory log was obviously written after he woke up because he drew the memory of his mom’s weird ritual at the end of legacy, so he already knows what his power is. but i have a feeling this isn’t about that.

also the way all of his little entries always became about sophie is a little hilarious and SUPER adorable. he’s so whipped that she is a part of his regular thought process about literally everything.

shannon messenger is the best. her writing has provoked so much thought and emotion in me that i literally cried for like. two hours. yes i am a seventeen year old crying at a kids book.

no matter what i think about the actual plot, it’s written so well, and so beautifully. it flows amazingly. ive always loved books with more than one pov, and this only reiterates my fondness of it. this book opened up so many new possibilities, and it sparked new creativity in me. thank you shannon. youve given me so much more than you’ll ever know.

that said… my initial reaction is still super heavy in my mind, so i am seriously not able to be subjective and logical when it comes to talking about the book. specifically the ending.

i havent read the guide yet since i wanted to wait for my physical copy to come for that (i read the novella in my ebook), so ill probably be back in a few days with some thoughts on that

so. im plotting my fix it fic as we speak

i cant believe this is my sixths release season. i remember when neverseen came out, i actually went to the bookstore that day to buy it off of the shelf because i didnt know you could preorder. very honestly, i dont remember that year very well, i was in seventh grade and i barely remember what i had for dinner last night. but i distinctly remember seeing the neverseen display and feeling so excited to know what comes next.

little did i know, i would still be reading as a senior in high school. im about to turn 18, and i still preorder this middle grade series every year because it makes me so happy. it jumpstarted my career path. i wasnt a writer until kotlc made me one, and now i get to go to college knowing exactly what i want to be. i could never repay shannon messenger for that.

i dont know why, but this year feels so different from past release years. not because of the pandemic, or because it’s technically a half book. it might just be because of where the story has gone, and where it’s taken us as readers. i know im not the only one who grew up with sophie.

yes, i will post spoilers, and i will tag them all appropriately. as long as you have blacklisted the tags “spoiler” or “spoilers” you should be fine. i likely wont get my book until sometime in the next two weeks, so i’ll be doing the same as well. that said, please dont come to my inbox with any spoilers until i make it explicitly clear that i’ve finished the book, which i always do. that pretty much goes for all other blogs on here as well, because man, it really sucks being spoiled. especially since we’ve been waiting so long.

anyway, thanks for jumping down memory lane with me. i hope you all have fun this release season. and please remember to try and stay positive. i know it can be pretty doomsville lately, but not everything has to be a downer. we can find the brauty in small things.

Because she isgiven traits that should make her interesting and relatable!

Her tendency to overthink and often overwhelming anxiety are the most prominent ones I can think of, but also her analysis skills and low self-confidence.

And she isn’t devoid of character! However, she is given traits that give her the unfortunate “I’m not like other girls” vibe. One of the main culprits is her relationship with wearing dresses and fancy attire.

Two ways to handle Sophie’s aversion to dresses/fancy clothes (according to me, a teen girl):

1) She only wears fancy clothes to fit in with elven society and begins wearing pants/more simple clothing as the series goes on to show how she’s standing against elven society. This sort of happened in Flashbackwith her new, simple combat attire, but it seems to have been dropped since.

2) Her aversion to dresses was a result of human internalized misogyny and low confidence and she works through it throughout the series. She grows to appreciate the style and becomes confident in wearing it and comfortable in her own femininity.

and neither seems to be happening? Is just treated as, “Sophie’s not like other girls, she doesn’t like dresses but she’s doing it anyways to appease elven society and she doesn’t like the attention but also she wants Fitz/Keefe to look at her but also she’s oblivious to their advances” and it’s just. No.

please no.

Because she isn’t exactly oblivious to their romantic interest in her, but she does for the most part ignore it. I think part of it comes from her low self-confidence, stemming from her childhood as an outcast, but she also seems to be actively ignoring their advances. It’s safer to keep them as friends for the moment, to keep them a stable part of her life as everything else spirals out of control.

And see, I think this is an interesting and realistic take to a love triangle! But the way other characters perceive Sophie and label her as “oblivious” is very unfortunate. It sort of pushes her into a box of the “cute, innocent, oblivious girl” and denies readers introspection into Sophie’s actual thought process.

Another thing I wanted to address, that I unfortunately can’t speak on to great extent, is Sophie’s habit of ripping out her eyelashes. This seems to be some form of trichotillomania, a hair-pulling mental disorder which involves recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out hair. The fact that this is portrayed as a quirky character trait, and not the serious issue it is, seems unfortunate to me. Again, I don’t suffer from trich, so I’m not sure what the opinion of someone who has trich would be, but I wanted to point it out.

I know there was more I wanted to discuss that I can’t currently remember. Just. There are a lot of different factors combined that make Sophie a rather dull character to me, when she had the potential to really stand out as a protagonist.
