On this day in 2008, Sozin’s Comet premiered and Avatar: The Last Airbender came to an end

Happy 12th anniversary, Sozin’s Comet.

starscamefalling-deactivated202:

my favorite parallel in the show:

Katara: Now that I know he’s out there… now that I know we can find him, I feel like I have no choice. [“The Southern Raiders”]

Aang: I guess I don’t have a choice, Momo. I have to kill the Fire Lord. [“Sozin’s Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters”]

and then they both realize that they do have a choice:

[ID: Two matching gifs of Katara and Aang from “The Southern Raiders” and “Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang,” respectively. They are making the same circular motion to attack Yon Rha and Ozai as their opponents cower in fear. Their attack then liquefies as they choose to hold back, drenching Yon Rha and Ozai in water. Katara and Aang then move backwards simultaneously as they relax their fighting stances. End ID]

Anybody else have Sozin’s Comet on their 2020 bingo card?

First I was a month early for the Avatar series finale’s 10th anniversary, and now I’m a day late. Andrew Whalen at Newsweek published an article last night about the making of the 4-part finale, featuring new interviews with directors Joaquim Dos Santos @jds_77 and Ethan Spaulding @ethanspauldingart3633 and series co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino @mike_dante_d and me. Aang describing why he is unwilling to kill Ozai.

Aangs best friend, Monk Gyatso surrounded by the bodies of slaughtered firebenders

Aang: “I took away your fire bender, you can’t use it to hurt or threaten anyone else ever again.”

Kyoshi: *chuckles* “that’s cute Aang, I froze the water inside his body to stop his lungs & heart from working.

I just had a thought. Actually 2 thoughts.

1st of all, due to the close proximity of the Western air temple to the fire nation, it is more than likely that it was attacked 1st, correct?

So could it be said that the other air temples heard about the attack? Or was it more like an ambush attack where the fire nation got into place before the comet came and then attacked all at once? But then how was the Fire nation able to coordinate the attack? Like, was the plan laid out beforehand, and was just put into play when the comet actually arrived?

But then how did the fire nation even get to the air temples? Like the only way to get to the air temple is to fly. Obviously the air benders had no trouble getting around, what with their flying bison and gliders. So how did the fire nation get there? I was under the impression that the mechanist created created the air balloons fairly recently. And then Sokka had to help with the problem getting it to rise and fall.

Like were they invited? Were the air nomads like, “Hey you’re our allies, welcome, let’s get you up here” and then the firebenders just turned on them and slaughtered them when the airbenders were too surprised to fight back?

I have questions and not enough answers.
