Hi All. I’m not as active on here so if your interested please be sure to follow me on my insta. @VincentCoviello.  Anyways,  I just started re-watching Avatar the Last Airbender and goodness does it holdup. It has to be one of my all time favorite animated series. The world creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko  conjured up is one of the best examples of world building I’ve seen. This series is a beautiful mix of real world philosophy, beliefs and customs mixed with fantasy. If you are following me, I am going to assume you’ve seen it. If not, I highly recommend it and Avatar The Legend of Korra.

I was particularly fond of the Spirit World and Hei Bai is right up my alley in terms of design. So here is a quick rendition in my style.

Here’s the new cover Joaquim Dos Santos @2-cents drew and I colored for the upcoming 2nd edition of The Legend of Korra: Art of the Animated Series: Book One from @darkhorsecomics . It was SO MUCH FUN to collaborate with my old buddy Joaquim again.

Before I get to the crux of this statement, I would like to make it clear that I am very aware and appreciative of the fact that I am in an exceedingly fortunate position, and that the following issues are indeed good problems to have — even more so now that we are in the grips of a global pandemic and a cratering economy which have left millions unemployed. With that crucial context, here is the big news from my little world.

Michael DiMartino and I recently chose to leave Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the series he and I created together in 2002. We will have no involvement in the project moving forward. This is probably the most difficult decision I have ever made. But there is no doubt in my mind it was absolutely the right choice.

When Netflix brought me on board to run this series alongside Mike two years ago, they made a very public promise to support our vision. Unfortunately, there was no follow-through on that promise. Though I got to work with some great individuals, both on Netflix’s side and on our own small development team, the general handling of the project created what I felt was a negative and unsupportive environment.

To be clear, this was not a simple matter of us not getting our way. Mike and I are collaborative people; we did not need all of the ideas to come from us. As long as we felt those ideas were in line with the spirit and integrity of Avatar, we would have happily embraced them. However, we ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series.

Though I am profoundly disappointed by how things turned out, there are wonderfully talented people who are still working on the series, some of whom Mike and I personally hired and got to know well during our time on the project. We worked very hard together towards a shared dream of how special this adaptation could be. I want to see them employed, and I hope they get the chance to do their best work on the series. Perhaps the team that remains might still be able to make something fans of the original and an entirely new audience can enjoy.

By and large, I have an incredibly charmed career and I am very grateful for it. And I am enormously lucky for the amazing global community of fans that has grown around the shows Mike and I have created and run together. I will continue to be deeply involved in the Avatar universe, telling the stories my partner and I want to tell in the way we want to tell them. I will put my time, energy, and talents towards the projects that give me the most fulfilment, and where I am afforded trust and respect. Life is too short to do otherwise.

First I was a month early for the Avatar series finale’s 10th anniversary, and now I’m a day late. Andrew Whalen at Newsweek published an article last night about the making of the 4-part finale, featuring new interviews with directors Joaquim Dos Santos @jds_77 and Ethan Spaulding @ethanspauldingart3633 and series co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino @mike_dante_d and me. A recent color/cleanup test for Threadworlds. I’m just about to finish the rough layouts of volume one… It’s LONG. Very eager to start digging into making the final pages. I’ll announce info about the release when I can but it is going to be a while before it’s out — which has its pros and cons. But it will feel amazing to hold the real thing in my hands one day.

Even for the small amount of screen time of these two showing affection for one another, I loved ever second of it.

I really wished Nickelodeon took advantage of this because their chemistry was amazing for only be shown for just a little bit during Book 3 & Book 4.

(Art: Dorkly)

I am truly disappointed in Netflix.

Ever since Netflix added ATLA to Netflix, the series has been shown to new fans who loves this show & old fans who get to relive their childhood watching this growing up.

This show is beloved by old fans & new fans all because of the creators Mike & Bryan & their phenomenal writing team & Netflix wants to tear that apart in the live action series ? That’s the main reason why the animated series is great. Why break the main piece of the puzzle ?

I hope Netflix rethinks their decision & let’s the creators have their creative freedom like they were promised 2 years ago.

On the bright side, they get to go back to making animated series of the world Avatar. Which isn’t all that bad if the Netflix doesn’t accept them back.

I’m crossing my fingers that it’s an Avatar Kyoshi series, I want one so bad especially after reading the amazing two books that have been released. Although I won’t be mad if we get another new avatar.

It’s a Win/Win situation for me because I trust Mike & Bryan that they will deliver a fantastic series just like ATLA & Korra. (Although I want avatar kyoshi series more than anything ha)

Imagine being a clown & picking Aang & Roku over Kyoshi & Korra.

Let’s be real for a second, Kyoshi alone would beat Aang & Roku, she is hands down the strongest avatar that has ever lived.

Kyoshi feats are unmatched.
- She made a whole ass island for her people
- She was trained by the greatest firebender ever!!! (My girl Rangi)
- She froze the water inside someone’s lungs & heart to kill them.
- Nearly broke a guys neck for hitting on her while he was drunk
- Made earth come up from the bottom of the ocean to destroy an entire fleet.
- Survived after someone bend lightning at her, didn’t even redirect it.
- Longest living Avatar of all time. 230 years old.

Aang & Roku ain’t got shit on kyoshi.

image

Aang: “I took away your fire bender, you can’t use it to hurt or threaten anyone else ever again.”

Kyoshi: *chuckles* “that’s cute Aang, I froze the water inside his body to stop his lungs & heart from working.

Kyoshi & Rangi > Aang & Katara

(Trust me I still love Kataang but I love Rangshi way more, they make my heart melt everytime they share a scene together. Theyre just so perfect for each other.)

bryankonietzko:

This is my fan art for the 10th anniversary of Gene Luen Yang’s incredible graphic novel “American Born Chinese.” I started working with Gene on the Avatar books before I read this work of his. Its reputation preceded it (it deservedly won just about ALL the awards), and I had already gotten to know Gene and his writing by the time I picked it up—or so I thought. ABC’s structure threw me off at first. It was really challenging. Abrasive. Discordant. This wasn’t the story I had imagined and built up in my head from all of my friends’ and colleagues’ rave reviews. Halfway through I wasn’t sure I liked it. I wondered, “How is he going to tie all of this together?” And then BAM. He did. And the story and message were all the more powerful for taking me somewhere I wasn’t expecting to go. For challenging my expectations. How could I have presumed to know Gene’s story? And why would I have wanted him to tell it to me in a way that was comfortable and familiar to me? Powerful art and storytelling SHOULD challenge the audience. They should come from a specific point of view. Bravo, Gene!
