The Way We Fall

Title: The Way We Fall
Pairings: Jared/StuntDouble!Y/N
Word Count: 4,896
Warnings: Cursing, Accidents, Coma, Fighting with idiots, NCIS-LA cast
#SPNMixedBingo Square Filled – Stunt Double AU

The last time Y/N had to do a fall like this, she was seriously injured and in a coma for 8 months. This time will be different. Jared decides he needs to be there in case something goes wrong again.

Jared slipped the necessary credentials over his head and walked onto the closed set. Occasionally, someone would call out to him, and he’d raise his hand in greeting, but he had one destination in mind. The special effects trailer was in the back of the lot near the props department.

“If it isn’t Padelecki,” he heard an agitated voice say. His eyes narrowed minutely at the harsh tone of voice, his already frayed nerves flaring. Turning his head, he laid eyes on Barrett Foa. It was no secret that the two didn’t get along, especially after the well-publicized fight that broke out at the NCIS-LA post-season party. Jared didn’t break his determined stride and continued his way to where he was going.

“Hey, I’m talking to you,” Barrett shouted. Jared turned on his heel with narrowed eyes, but a familiar hand on his chest stopped him in his tracks. Turning his head, he spotted eric Olsen standing next to him.

“Fuck off, Foa. Don’t you have a producer to go crying to?” Eric said, glaring fiercely at Barrett. Barrett continued to glare at Jared.

“I’m not talking to you Eric. I’m talking to the guy who doesn’t even belong here,” Barrett snarked. Eric smirked.

“Yeah? Well, I’m talking to you. Y/N made her choice, and it wasn’t you. Intentionally keep this shit up, and the rest of the cast will petition to get you kicked off the show. Now, beat it,” Eric said. Barrett opened his mouth to say something else, but another voice chimed in before he could.

“There a problem here?” Barrett turned to say something, but his mouth clicked shut when he saw Chris walking up, looking casual with his hands in his pockets. If there was anyone on the show that you didn’t mess with, it was Chris O’Donnell. Without another word, Barrett turned and walked off. The three men watched him until he was out of sight.

“I could have taken him,” Jared said, only half-joking. Eric laughed lightly, instantly dropping his hand from the big man’s chest.

“We learned that last time,” he said. Chris shook his head with a wry grin.

“Let’s leave the fighting to the stunt doubles today. Speaking of, I naturally assume that’s why you’re here today?” Chris said. Jared nodded, and the three started walking toward the trailer.

“Yeah, she was talking about it last night on the phone with me. She’s nervous about the fall. The last time she fell, she had a pretty bad injury. Left her out of the game for about a year,” Jared said, a frown on his face. Chris shook his head.

“I know they are taking extra precautions today,” he said. “Set up an extra rig for it and they have an extra airbag on the ground to make sure Y/N doesn’t fall through it again.” Jared nodded his head. Eric patted Jared on the back.

“She’ll be fine,” he said.

Y/N stood in jeans and a white tank top while the special effects team strapped on bags of fake blood and wiring to her body. Her arms were held out, hands resting on the shoulders of two techs, as they connected the devices. Behind her, one of the hairdressers fiddled with her hair to give it the perfect tousled look that Daniela had.

“I don’t know why you are bothering; I’m falling off a three-story building today,” she wittily said to Bethany, the woman working on her hair. Bethany laughed.

“You’re supposed to look like Kensi before you fall off the building,” she said. Y/N shrugged one of the techs straightened up and looked over Y/N’s body, causing her to laugh.

“Keep looking at me like that, Shawn, and I’m gonna start to worry,” Y/N laughed. Shawn darted his glance up at Y/N’s face with a wry smile before going back to double-checking his work one more time. He went back to fiddling with the wires to one of the direct connections.

“I wouldn’t want to be on Jared’s bad side,” he joked, causing Y/N to roll her eyes.

“Barrett had it coming. That asshole doesn’t know when to stop,” Y/N growled. Cyrus patted her on the shoulder.

“Don’t worry, I think he learned his lesson at last year’s wrap party,” he said. Y/N smirked as she thought back to the party.

“Yeah,” Shawn said. “He rightfully deserved every hi…” SPLAT!!

Suddenly, the entire special effects trailer erupted into hysterics as one of the three blood packs that Shawn was working on exploded in his face, covering him in bright red syrup. Shawn lifted his hands and wiped across his eyes, so he could open them, then looked up at Y/N from his place on his knees in front of her. She was laughing so hard, she was crying.

“Oh, my God,” Bethany cried. “I’m so sorry, but your face…”

“I didn’t even do anything!” Y/N yelled, laughing hysterically.

“You realize you need to take everything off and change your shirt now, then come back and put all this shit back on now, right?” Shawn said sternly, standing up. Someone threw a towel at him, the towel landing on his head.

“At least we know it works now?” Cyrus said with a delighted chuckle. The look Shawn gave him, his face half-covered in fake blood, made the entire trailer break down in boisterous laughter again. They didn’t even hear the door open or notice anyone walk in.

“What’s so funny?” Chris asked, and when Shawn turned and looked at him as he wiped the blood off his face and hair, he began to laugh. “Never mind.”

“Aren’t those blood packs supposed to be typically triggered by a remote?” Eric asked, snickering. Cyrus nodded his head as he unclipped the rig Y/N was wearing and helped her slip it off over her head. Bethany went to the back of the trailer and shouted out the window to have someone grab another white tank top.

“Someone has big fingers,” Cyrus muttered as he set the rig down on one of the tables. Y/N turned away from everyone and walked to the back of the trailer, not seeing who entered.

“I don’t want to hear anything about Shawn’s big fingers, thank you very much! It’s bad enough I have to have his hands all over my body as it is, and not in a fun way!” Y/N shouted from the back where she was cleaning up. Jared instantly raised a brow as he heard his gorgeous girlfriend’s words, a playful smirk on his face. Everyone turned to look at Jared, smiles on their faces as they eagerly waited to see how he would react.

“Why’s he got his hands all over your body and I don’t?” Jared shouted back. Everyone laughed knowingly when they heard Y/N squeal. They saw Y/N slide upfront in her socks, jeans, and sports bra splattered with red paint. “And you are running around without a shirt on? What the hell kind of operation are you running here, O’Donnell?”

“Don’t look at me, Padalecki. She’s not MY stunt double,” Chris laughed, holding both hands up in surrender. Y/N darted forward and jumped up into Jared’s muscled arms, planting a kiss on her boyfriend’s lips. She wrapped her legs around his trim waist to hold herself up, causing Jared to have to wrap his arms around her to keep her from falling.

“What are you doing here?” Y/N asked. Jared laughed as he looked at himself, seeing the red marks on his shirt.

“I’m wearing your red paint, my dear,” he replied, setting her down. Y/N grimaced, carefully wiping his shirt with her hands.

“Sorry,” She said. “But seriously, what are you doing here?” Jared leaned down and affectionately pressed a kiss to her forehead, forgetting the people around them watching.

“Y/N! Tank top!” Bethany shouted triumphantly, throwing the tank top at her from behind. It landed on her shoulder and partially on her head. She pulled it off and laughed as she pulled it on. She glanced behind Jared to see Chris and Eric just relaxing and watching them.

“I’m here to see you make the jump,” Jared said gently, placing his hands on Y/N’s shoulders. Y/N’s face went from ecstatic to worry. Cyrus pulled Y/N back by her arm and set the rig back over her shoulders, this time with a fresh blood pack. Shawn spun in his chair and faced her again so he could set up the wiring.

“Arms up,” Cyrus said, pulling Y/N’s arms up. Y/N started at Jared, who leaned against the wall next to Eric and Chris.

“You’re here to watch me jump?” she asked cautiously. Jared nodded his head.

“I know you said you didn’t need me here to watch you, but I know you’re nervous and after what happened last time…” he said, but Y/N eagerly interrupted him.

“We’re not talking about last time,” she said with a shake of her head. She glanced at everyone else in the room, her eyes wide, then gae Jared a look. Jared raised a brow and nodded, the silent conversation between the two obvious. Everyone saw the shared look between them and didn’t say anything.

“Let’s just get this done so I can go home with my amazing man, okay? He flew in just to see me and I plan on taking full advantage of that,” Y/N said with raised eyebrows and a saucy smirk. Cyrus glanced up at Jared, Chris, and eric with a raised brow before returning his precise focus on the rig he was attaching. The feeling in the room subtly changed, and while Y/N was trying to lighten it, the darkness lingered all the same.

“Shawn,” Cyrus said, looking down at Shawn. Shawn glanced up at Cyrus before refocusing on attaching the wiring again. “Don’t blow your load this time.” Delighting giggles exploded inside the trailer; the tension was successfully broken.

“I swear to God, Cyrus,” Shawn cursed under his breath.

“Stop moving, Y/N!” Bethany reprimanded, a can of hairspray in one hand and spraying curls in place. Y/N smirked as she looked over at Jared, throwing him a knowing wink.

“So, what happened back there?” Eric asked as the three men walked away from the special effects trailer to give the team a chance to finish putting the rig together without distraction. Jared threw the man a cautious glance and shook his head.

“She’d undoubtedly kill me if she finds out I said anything,” he said with a pointed look. Eric made a zipped lip gesture. Jared shifted his direct gaze to Chris, who also agreed to keep quiet. Jared let out a deep sigh, glancing cautiously over his shoulder to be sure that Y/N wasn’t near them before relaying the story of her past.

“Y/N told me what it’s like to do a fall like this. She said even though you land on the airbag or the mattress, the air is completely knocked out of your lungs. They’re trained to inhale deeply as they are falling so when they land, they still have air in their lungs despite the punch pushing the air out. She said they are taught how to fall correctly so your head is cushioned on the airbag and your neck is protected,” Jared explained. “She told me it takes a few minutes for her to come back to herself, so she would just lay there for a minute or two until she could inhale properly…then just get up and walk away.”

“Okay…” Chris said, slightly confused with the explanation.

“The accident happened when she was on the Supernatural set, years ago… Maybe the third or fourth season we were on? She had to do a fall as a demon that Dean threw out a window,” Jared started, intentionally slowing their walk to a stop. He paused as he remembered that day.

“What happened?” Eric asked.

“Someone miscalculated somehow on that fall, and Y/N missed part of the airbag, and her head landed on the mat under the airbag instead. Her head snapped back, breaking her neck instantly,” Jared said quietly, his hazel eyes staring off in the distance.

“That explains why there are paramedics here today,” Chris said softly, looking at Eric. Jared nodded grimly.

“She stopped breathing for three minutes. They wouldn’t let me near her; they wouldn’t let anyone near her. Said we couldn’t move her until they knew her neck was stable. Jensen was devastated, thinking he just killed her. We had only been dating for about six months at that point,” he explained. Jared paused involuntarily for a moment, thinking back. He shook his head.

“She was in a coma for almost 8 months. When she finally woke up, the first thing she did was ask if she made the take. She had no what had happened.”

The three stood there quietly, lost in thought. Jared remembered spending every terrible night in the hospital for those 8 months, not leaving her side unless he had to. He wanted to be the first face she saw when she opened her eyes. Eeryone thought he was insane for willingly staying with her after only dating a few short months, but he knew how he felt and he knew it ws for the long haul. When she finally did open her tired eyes and askthat question, hebroke donw and cried fiercely. After all the things the doctors told him about not getting his hopes up and preparing for the worst, hearing her soft voice was the best thing he had ever heard in his life.

“I can’t believe she is still doing stunts,” Eric said impressively. Jared snorted at that.

“Everyone told her to quit. She told them to shove it; she knew what she wanted to do,” he said with a shrug. “She’s so lucky I love her.” The three men chuckled.

“Things are going to be fine today; you know that, right?” Chris asked. “There are so many experienced safety teams here and precautions being taken, you’d think this is a movie set and not just a tv show.” Jared nodded his head with considerable apprehension.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m sure things are going to be fine,” Jared said with a sigh. Eric clapped a hand on his shoulder and smiled knowingly.

“C’mon, ghostbuster. “Let’s head over to the set and get a good seat,” he said.

“So, the rig will blow with the gunshots that are supposed to hit, and then you stagger back and fall over the wall for the three-story drop,” the lead safety instructor pointed out from the ground. Y/N and two other safety technicians looked up at the top of the building. “Once you start the fall, we’ll trigger the foam that is around the second row of inflatables. The foam is like the rubber inside a latex pillow and will allow you to sing comfortably into it without any bounce. The farthest down you’ll go is halfway.”

“And this is going under the first and second inflatables as well, correct?” So that if there is a possible problem with them, there is something to catch me?” Y/N asked, her voice more serious than anyone had ever heard it. The safety instructor nodded.

“The foam will be under the inflatables as well, yes. We don’t use the mats anymore. The inflatables are green, so we can key them out for video, but the center one will be inflated one foot higher than the outer ring. It should catch you first and should there be any chance in the fall the out ring will be there to catch you,” the safety instructor explained. Y/N nodded her understanding as the three men walked up behind her. Jared put an arm around her, causing Y/N to look up at him. While her face was a mask of professionalism, he could read the apprehension in her eyes. The safety instructor looked up at the newcomers and frowned thoughtfully.

“Hey Eric, let’s give these guys a few minutes. Good luck on the fall, Y/N,” Chris said with a kind smile. Y/N looked over at him and smiled her thanks. As Chris and Eric walked away, Y/N looked up and Jared.

“No more mats,” she said softly, a timid smile on her lips. Jared raised his brows and looked up at the safety instructor.

“Really?” he eagerly questioned, intentionally causing the lead safety instructor to go through the entire explanation all over again. Jared nodded understandingly at the end and turned to Y/N. “Are you comfortable with all of this?”

“Yeah,” Y/N said, carefully taking a deep breath. “I think I’m good. No mats, taller airbags, the foam… We should be safer this time. No mistakes.”

“No mistakes,” Jared instantly agreed, gently kissing her on the forehead.

“Okay, let’s do this.”

Chris and Eric watched from the sideline as Jared and Y/N had a moment to themselves before she made her way to the top of the building. Now that they properly understood what made Jared show up to the fall today, they felt even more protective of their favorite stunt double.

“It’s kind of amazing that she’s alive, you know?” Eric said wistfully, his voice quiet. Chris nodded, watching as Jared gently pressed a kiss to Y/N’s forehead. “That fall should have killed her.”

“Kind of gives you a whole new respect for their relationship. It survived something like that as early as it did, nothing can break it up. Even Barrett doesn’t have a chance,” Chris said with a snicker. The two glanced over at Barrett, who was sulking on the other side of the set.

“We gotta do something about that kid,” Eric said as Jared walked up to the stand next to them.

“Which kid?” Jared asked, having overheard the last comment. Eric tilted his head toward Barrett and Jared rolled his eyes.

“Fuck that guy. So long as he keeps his damn hands off Y/N and stays out of my way,” Jared said, a snarl under his breath. Eric smirked at him, and Chris chuckled at him. The men refocused their attention on the stunt in front of them as they heard the safety team call out their warnings. The apprehension rolling off Jared was felt by the other two men.

“Don’t worry, Jared,” Chris said. “She’s got this.”

“Okay, you two,” Scotty said on the roof as she looked at Y/N and the stand-in for the shooter. “You ready?” Y/N nodded her head. Scotty turned her head to Cyrus and Shawn, who were standing comfortably at the table that had the direct controls for the rig she was wearing. Two thumbs up and they were ready.

“Okay, safety team. We’re good,” Scotty said into a walkie-talkie in her hand. Y/N closed her eyes and said a little prayer as she stood on her marker.

Please let this go well. Please don’t let this be like last time. Please. Please. PLEASE.

As the speakers echoed around her with specific warnings from the safety team, Y/N opened her eyes and stared down at the man in front of her who was holding the prop gun. She studiously ignored the cameras, just like she would ignore the cameras mounted to the building to record as she fell. Instead, she focused on the things she knew she had to do to keep herself as safe as possible as she did the fall she was paid to do.

“ACTION!”

As the gunshots echoed in the air around her, she staggered her steps backward. With each shot, one of the explosions of red syrup exploded on her front… each one triggered by Cyrus and Shawn at the table near the stairs they took to get to the top of the building. Shot one, and she intentionally threw her right shoulder backward with a step back with her right foot. Shot two, and she troubled over slightly as if she had taken a shot to the abdomen with a staggering step back with her left foot. Shot there took her right foot back again, this one without a blood splatter but still had her bent over some. And shot four was the final shot that had her throw herself upward, her left foot stepping back and just touching the edge of the building, the blood splatter exploding from the exact center of her chest. There was a recorded shout of Kelsi! coming from somewhere and that was her cue to tilt over the side of the building.

As Y/N slowly tilted back, she forced herself to inhale, and suddenly she was weightless as the air rushed by her. Three stories flew by her in seconds, and suddenly she landed hard on the airbag below. The air in her lungs rushed out of her. Stars danced in front of her eyes, and she prompted closed them to encase herself in darkness as she felt herself become breathless. Her entire body tensed as everything froze and stopped cooperating with her mind. She heard her heart beating fiercely in her head, but nothing else seemed to function as she wanted it to. Her arms didn’t move, her legs didn’t move, her lungs couldn’t pull in air. Nothing.

The airbag she was on slowly deflated around her, but everything around her remained still… unmoving. Even her brain wasn’t able to efficiently produce a cohesive thought, no matter how much she tried to string words together to form a sentence. She knew she was starting to show visible signs of trouble as she couldn’t pull precious air into her lungs quite yet, and something inside of her was panicking at that. Everything in her body was tense and confused. It was as if her subconscious was waiting passively for her brain to tell it that it was okay, and breathing was okay. Then an anxious voice echoed in her ears, causing everything to kick into gear.

Jared held his breath when the scene began. He heard the gunshots and knew that Y/N was acting as if she was realistically being shot at. Then he saw her at the edge of the building. He watched anxiously as she fell the three stories down and land safely on the airbag, but then she didn’t move. He reminded himself that she explained how it takes her body about a minute to kick in and move after a fall. But it’s been a minute, hasn’t it?

“Why isn’t she moving yet?” Jared asked quietly. Eric shook his head.

“Just give it a second,” he whispered tensely. Jared uneasily shifted his weight between his feet, anxious eyes flickering between the airbag and the ambulance.

“She should be moving by now,” Jared said, shaking his head. He watched as the safety team started moving forward, frantically pushing the airbag down as they climbed on it. He caught a glimpse of Y/N’s disheveled hair and the white shirt she was wearing. Suddenly, he was moving.

“Y/N!!” he shouted frantically, rushing forward. That inadvertently triggered the paramedics to rush forward as well. By the time Jared got to where Y/N was laying, she was panting heavily and starting to sit up. The profound relief that hit Jared left him staggering his steps. He got to where Y/N was still sitting and grabbed her arm, causing her to turn and look at him. He instantly pulled her into his arms away from the paramedics, crushing her to his chest.

“Oh, my God,” he breathed in her ear. Y/N tried to wrap her arms around him from where he had them pinned. “You weren’t moving, and I thought…”

“I’m okay, Jay. I’m okay,” Y/N said breathlessly. Jared pulled back to look at Y/N and took in her dazed look, put his hand behind her head, and crushed his mouth to hers in a heated kiss. Y/N pulled away after only a few precious seconds, feeling breathless. Jared looked at her confused.

“I want to but,” she breathed with difficulty. Jared understood immediately. She couldn’t breathe properly yet. Instead, Jared moved to scoop her up bridal style in his arms and tenderly carried her off the airbag to the waiting ambulance so the paramedics could finish their examination. As they looked her over, Jared refused to let her go. Multiple people came by to talk to her, including Cyrus, Shawn, and Barrett.

“Hey, Jared,” Barrett said nervously. “Mind if I talk to you for a moment?” Jared’s eyes narrowed slightly, and his grip on Y/N tightened gently. Y/N looked up at him to get his attention.

“Go ahead,” she said gently, her voice stronger now that she had some time to rest. Jared looked down at her questioningly. “Seriously. Go ahead. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I’ll be right back,” Jared said, gently pressing a kiss to her temple. Y/N smiled at the tender touch, then scooted off his lap so he could leave the vehicle. The paramedic moved out of his way so he could leave and returned his attention to Y/N. Jared and Barrett walked a few feet away from the ambulance, so they could speak privately.

“Make this quick, Foa,” Jared said sternly. “I don’t want to be away from her for a long time.”

“I just wanted to apologize,” Barrett said carefully, stuffing his hands in his pockets. Jared raised a brow, putting his hands on his hips.

“Come again?”

“Just hear me out, okay?” Barrett asked. Jared didn’t say anything and just stared at him. “I didn’t take your relationship seriously. I genuinely thought you two were just casual. I mean, she’s always flirting and messing around. You’re always flirting and messing around. I figured it was more of a friend with benefits thing. I didn’t realize how serious you guys were until I saw how you reacted when she fell…”

Jared stared at Barrett with narrowed eyes, watching carefully. How was it that everyone else around here understood how serious their relationship was, but Barrett couldn’t? then he saw how Barrett looked over at the ambulance where Y/N was sitting connected to a heart rate monitor, he saw the look in the guy’s sad eyes, and it clicked. The look Foa had was the same look he had when he looked at photos of him and Y/N together.

Barrett was in love with her, and he had to enviously watch her love someone else.

“It doesn’t excuse my erratic behavior, obviously. But I think I get it now. And I wanted to say I’m sorry,” Barrett said, turning his eyes to Jared. And Jared saw the hidden pain there, where Barrett finally realized that Y/N was never going to be his. “She’s madly in love with you, man. I should never have tried to mess with that.”

After a few long moments, Jared stuck his hand out. Barrett eagerly grasped it, and they shook, then hugged the typical one-arm man hug.

“Water under the bridge, man,” Jared said quietly. Barrett let out a relieved laugh before pulling back.

“Get back to your woman. Take that girl home. She really needs to get out of here before she loses her shit,” Barrett said before turning away. Jared watched him walk away with a new respect for the man before turning and jogging back to the ambulance. Sticking his head into the blocky vehicle, he smiled up at the woman of his dreams.

“What’s the official verdict, gentlemen? Can I take her home?” he asked, a goofy grin on his face. Y/N smiled at him as they started to carefully remove all their gear from her.

“She’s good to go. I say take it easy over the next few hours, take some Tylenol if you feel any soreness, but other than that, the upgrades did what they were supposed to. You’re fine,” one of the men said. Once Y/N was unhooked from everything, Jared held out an eager hand to help her get out of the ambulance and she stepped down with a relieved sigh.

“How about I go change clothes, and we go home? I think I’ve had enough excitement for the day,” Y/N said, keeping her fingers laced with Jared’s. The two started to walk leisurely toward the trailers.

“Really? I was thinking we could find a few more exciting things to add to today,” Jared said with a smirk on his lips. Y/N playfully poked him in the ribs.

“You heard the paramedic. I’m supposed to take it easy for the next few hours. I know we usually break the rules, but I’m going to listen to him this time. So how about a low-key early dinner and some brain-numbing television, and we see how things naturally go from there?” Y/N asked as they walked up to the trailer she was sharing with the other stunt doubles.

“I think that sounds like a plan, babe,” Jared said reassuringly, looking down at Y/N. Her smile turned soft, and she pulled him down to her by her shirt. Jared went willingly and eagerly responded when Y/N gently pressed a soft kiss to his mouth.

“Thank you for being here today,” she whispered fiercely, resting her forehead on his. “I didn’t realize I needed you here until I saw you.”

“I’ll always be here for you, babe. Always.”
