sam’s going through the pictures on his phone and comes across a blurry one from that one night the three of them went out for drinks to celebrate a successful hunt at some shitty bar somewhere in iowa: dean’s completely flushed, an arm thrown around cas’ shoulders, planting a big sloppy kiss on his cheek, while cas is staring solemnly straight at the camera, hair curling slightly at the ends, and he may not be smiling outright but sam’s seen that expression before- it’s the “it was all worth it” look, the same one cas gives to good coffee and stray cats and the mountains anytime they come up over the horizon when they’re driving to a hunt in the rockies. it’s everything that made cas choose humanity, and sam belatedly realizes the only reason he recognizes this look in the first place is because it’s how cas has always looked at dean
