When we explore the difference between male and female heroes, several things jump out. One is: the male hero often has an iconic foe. Batman has the Joker, Superman Lex Luthor – Wonder Woman has no one. Heroism is measured in proportion to the type and magnitude of its opposition. I want to address a few female heroes who really do find their strength when faced with an opponent: the right hero for the right occasion, and that hero happens to be female.

From the haunting children’s rhyme to the iron claws, with a striped sweater, fedora, the raw-meat of his skin, this dream-stalking murderer really brought the nightmare. Reality bent to accommodate his desires, and he preyed upon people when they couldn’t defend themselves. Worse yet, he preyed upon young people, isolating them from the elders who should be protecting them.

Freddy was at his best when pitted against an appropriate opponent – Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson. He menaces her in the bath, making her an image of passive vulnerability.

In the beginning, Freddy perceives Nancy as defenseless. He doesn’t realize who he’s facing. Because Nancy Thompson will kick his motherfucking ass.

Freddy is caught off-guard when she studies weapons, explosives, military strategy, and turns the predator into her prey. (Afterwards, in a sequel, she does something even more awesome: she comes back, to mentor and protect others.)

Without Nancy to square off against, Freddy became Jerry Seinfeld with claws.

The most impressive part of this character sheet is that I remembered to make a color palette XD Anyway, this is Myōkaze. She’s a Kaijin who works at the Kaiju Academy as an adviser (a new project for Monsterpedia 8!).

If you’ve seen frolicsome British sitcom ‘Outnumbered’, there’s a good chance you kept watching because you recognised those kids. Fortunately and unfortunately, there are Karens everywhere. She’s the youngest, played by a right special Ramona Marquez, and the defining thing about five-year-old Karen Brockman is that she’s absolutely right all the time. I’m not even being sarcastic. Gotham is so dark and turbulent a city; it’s insane that anyone lives there at all. The streets are built on crime, the crime is swallowed by bent cops, and dangerous psychopaths run rife and reign supreme. It’s hard for a rogue to stand out in a city like Gotham, but here’s one that does: a mini Selina Kyle, perfectly interpreted by Camren Bicondova. One day she’ll be Catwoman, but I reckon she’s already there. This kid is exactly a cat. [Read more on goodcharacters.blogspot.co.uk]

When we first saw her, she’d stepped straight out of the comics; stoic and hard, poised with her katana and flanked by subservient undead. Danai Gurira’s Michonneis one of the most hardened warriors in ‘The Walking Dead’, and even after we glance at her past she remains an enigma to us. But we can make a few guesses. I know a girl from an island, she stands apart from the crowd. Moana, eponymous hero of her own magical Disney film, is a spirited teenage voyager and heir to the chiefdom of a Polynesian island village. She’s voiced brilliantly by Auliʻi Cravalho, both in dialogue and song. This article celebrates Moana as the perfect role model, whether you’re a headstrong youngster or a shiny old crab. Few good stories can pull off a hero like Sarah Linden, but ‘The Killing’ gets it done. Played with some serious edge by Mireille Enos, Detective Linden starts out broken and ends up broken. Emotionally demolished and never rebuilt, this complex protagonist seems unfixable — a brave and realistic move on the part of the writers. But you saw how her entire story arc ends… did the unfixable detective really end up fixed, right at the last moment? [Read more on goodcharacters.blogspot.co.uk]

If you want a really satisfying fantasy-adventure, watch ‘Merlin’ with the assumption that it’s actually the story of Guinevere. Played by a brilliantly likeable Angel Coulby, you could see Gwen as fitting the traditional role of hero more than either Merlin or Arthur. Enjoy the story of ‘Merlin’ from Gwen’s perspective and you’ll find that the ultimate fate of this brave, floundering young seamstress is all the more fulfilling because, if you ask her, she’s only here for support. In one of Marvel’s darkest TV offerings yet, the story begins after the superhero one has already ended. Played with bite by Krysten Ritter, the eponymous Jessica Jones is compelling from the first beat, which is kind of literal: she beats people up a lot. But sometimes that’s just the way she connects with people. She’s a tangled-up character, and very realistically so: her internal disorientation is shown in almost every scene. ‘Arabian Nights’ is the atmospheric miniseries that sprung from ‘One Thousand and One Nights’, a compendium of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories within stories. In the miniseries, Mili Avital plays wise Scheherazade, a lover of tales whose own journey to becoming a master storyteller is wrought with peril; but also spellbinding imagination and unconditional love. Her stories say much about the world and people around her, but they say more about Scheherazade herself. [Read more on goodcharacters.blogspot.co.uk]
