John and Edward have been in the news a lot these past few weeks. Two weeks ago they launched the music video for their hot new single, “Free Spirit”.  The video, like most of their music videos over the past two years, was made and edited by the twins themselves, and has met with critical acclaim from all over the world.  Shot in Ireland and Italy, the video complements the song perfectly, using fresh and free scenery…and not to mention smouldering looks from the twins themselves!

Prior to their video launch, the twins had been making headlines for all the wrong reasons, having had a close shave at Malahide Beach, County Dublin, where they had been stranded by rising tides.  The Skerries Coast Guard rescued the twins, who had been on a beach walk with their young cousin.  John and Edward visited the Skerries heroes late last week for a reunion with those who had quite literally, it emerges, saved their lives.

The twins presented two awards at Dublin radio station 98fm’s “Best of Dublin” Awards, giving out two prizes - “Best Barber/Hairdresser”, which went to Pose and Pout, of Blanchardstown, and “Best Restaurant”, going to Roast, in Ballsbridge

On Saturday however, they shall be a headlining act at this year’s Guilfest, in Guildford, Surrey, UK.  Jedward fans are flying in from all over to catch the performance of the Duo, their first live gig since their smash performance at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, back in April.

Tickets are still available for Guilfest.  Free Spirit is available on iTunes.

I’ve taken some time out to myself since I came back from Norway processing everything that I did in Norway and all the lovely people I met. It surely has set me up good for the hard autumn ahead. Lots of good memories that I will focus on ahead and the qualms and thought processes I had from my trip I’ve now had time to deal with in my own way so I again can focus on the positiveness I’m trying to find in everyday. But I also are aware there will be hard day’s ahead so if you’re struggling with things don’t ever let anyone tell you to snap out of it cause only you know how things really are. Take time out for you, talk with someone you trust if you feel that helps you and you’ll come out stronger. If anyone wants to talk I’m always here no matter how big or little the problem is ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Mike and I have been walking quite a bit since we got back from Norway and tonight’s walk was asking the river Wey here in Surrey. It’s a heatwave here right now with temperatures in the late 30s so I’m roasting It’s cooler in the evenings but still around 25-26 degrees Celsius so hot hot hot. But look at the colours of the sunset tonight It was stunning! So relaxing and tranquil and hardly a soul out either. Bliss!

These six tiny youngsters are pheasant chicks, and they were brought into the centre after being found abandoned in a road. Sadly no sigh was found of any parents and they would not have survived on their own.

Whilst, very sadly, one of the youngsters was too weak to survive, the remaining five are doing well and are currently staying with one of our team for round the clock support.

It is still early days, but we hope they will be able to head back to the wild once fully grown.

This young jay was brought into our care after being found by the side of a road. Whilst is was still quite bright, our vet team found a small wound on the birds head, exposing the skull.

Amazingly, the bone was not damaged and, after a quick clean with iodine solution, the wound was glued closed using the special Dermaflex glue we were kindly donated recently (causing much less stress or risk than sutures).

The jay, now on a course of antibiotics, is recovering in one of our cages and will head back to the wild once fully grown.

In this rescue, Simon attempts to capture a greylag goose with an injured leg. After Simon shows himself up a little, with a fumbled catch, the goose was quickly on it’s way back to the centre for treatment.

Sadly, an X-ray revealed that the fracture had been caused by a gun pellet! However, Maru, our lead veterinary surgeon was confident of a successful repair.

Check out the video to see the full rescue and operation.

These five great-spotted woodpecker chicks now bring our total number to ten!

Sadly, the tree they were nesting in fell down in high winds and they were brought into our care after being found scattered on the ground.

Whilst not physically injured, they were all quite dehydrated and were given sub-cutaneous fluids before being moved into a warm enclosure to recover. Once looking a little more lively (and happily calling away), they were transferred to one of our volunteer orphan feeders for round the clock care. With feeds due every hour, they will be quite a handful!

Our office manager, Alice, had quite a shock when she got home to find this little vole on the mesh of her bathroom window!

We’re not sure how it got there, but it’s now safely admitted to the centre! With no injuries, it just needs a bit of time to grow before it can return to the wild :)

This week’s ID quiz is definitely a tough one. How well do you know your bird eggs?

They could belong to tiny garden birds or to any number of the UK’s birds of prey. How many can you guess, correctly?

Keep an eye out for the answers, posted tomorrow at midday.

These two extremely tiny birds are, in fact, goldcrest chicks. Along with the firecrest, the goldcrest is the UK’s smallest bird and they are rarely seen here at the centre!

As they are so small and prove tricky to raise in captivity, they require round-the-clock care; these two are now being fed by one of our specialist orphan feeders.

Although their future is very guarded, we always try our utmost to raise every animal, right through to release, so, we’ll keep you updated on their progress.

After only 6 days of being with us here at the centre, this young nuthatch already looks remarkably different and will soon be moved into
an aviary with some of our other garden birds.

Young birds grow so quickly and nuthatches can fly the nest after just 22 days!

Woodpecker number four arrived with us, this week, after the tree containing it’s nest was felled. Sadly, some contractors don’t know or choose to ignore the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 regulations that prevent instances like this.

Luckily for the bird, an examination proved it to be fit and healthy, although not yet old enough to survive alone in the wild. So, this woodpecker will now join our other three youngsters, until they are ready to be released in a few months’ time.

This tiny moorhen chick had almost drowned before a kind member of the public rushed to save its life. Sadly, there were no signs of its parents and it was rushed into the centre for help.

Whilst it had, remarkably, escaped injury and was soon quite bright and lively, it was still too young to survive alone in the wild and needed a little help to reach adulthood. It is currently in one of our duckling units awaiting transfer to The Swan Sanctuary to grow up with others of its kind.

It will head back to the wild once fully grown :)

With many people engaging in home improvement works during lockdown, sights like this are, sadly, becoming all too common. This nest of great tits was brought into the centre after being uncovered during building works. Unfortunately, despite knowing the nest was there, the company involved did not halt work and, instead, removed the nest so work could continue - something that is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981).

Although these youngsters will now be raised in our care, it’s such a shame that they could not have remained with their parents - especially as they will have vacated the nest themselves in just a few weeks time…

These tiny youngsters are young great tits and, unfortunately, they were taken into our care after their nest was accidentally cut from an ivy wall.

Sadly, one of the birds was too weak to survive the disturbance and journey, but the other four responded well to care and are now much more lively.

Growing quickly, they are now in our custom bird unit and are very keen on their food!

With lockdown set to continue, people are out gardening more than ever. Unfortunately, this is leading to a vast increase in youngsters being admitted to the centre.

Sadly, these four rabbit kits were admitted to the centre, having been dug up from their warren. Luckily, all of them had escaped injury but, unfortunately, were unable to be returned to their nest. After a thorough examination from our vet team, they were transferred to Angela, one of our vital animal carers.

Please be extra vigilant for wildlife when gardening at this time of the year.

This Canada gosling (treated under licence) has made a remarkable recovery in the last 24 hours!

Arriving in a very collapsed state, it could barely stand and a veterinary examination found significant bruising to its neck and head. Maru, our lead vet, spent several hours gently nursing it back to health and, amazingly, this little guy is now looking much better!

Although still a little wobbly, it is now able to stand and walk and it shouldn’t be long before it joins others of its kind.

It’s been a while now since this buzzard arrived with us, but we’re pleased to announce it has made great progress!

Originally transferred from the RSPCA after being hit by a car on the M40, it was left with a fractured clavicle and needed a period of supported cage rest in order to recover. We’re delighted to say that it is now looking much better and has just been moved into one of our aviaries to stretch its wings at last!

We’re hoping it can head back to the wild very soon!
