pinoy-culture:

So about 2 years ago I made a pre-colonial Philippines reference post with links to English translated texts from Spanish written accounts of our ancestors during the early colonization, to Chinese accounts, some books and essays, videos, and posts that were already written on Pinoy-Culture.

If you remember I did do an updated list last September that I posted but on wordpress, not on Tumblr. This is when I was debating whether to have Pinoy-Culture have it’s own blog separate from Tumblr but after a couple months I preferred to leave it and stick with Tumblr for now. Sadly while transferring the domain over from the wordpress blog to here I lost all the posts I have written over there that wasn’t fully posted on here but linked, including this post. At least that is what I thought. I’ve been looking through my databases for my hosting as I am working on creating two separate sites for my aunt and a family friends business and thought what if they were stored somehow somewhere? Turns out after turning to faithful Google, I learned that you can indeed find all the posts you have written on Wordpress saved in a certain directory. And long a behold I did find it!

Thank goodness because this reference post is one of my most requested and it has more updated links than the original. So I will be posting this again and I have also added a few other links and references on here that I have personally found and read over the past few months. This post is dedicated for those of you interested in reading the material yourselves and enriching yourself with knowledge of our history and cultures. Enjoy!

I have broken it down to 4 sections.

I. Pre-colonial History & Culture Based on Primary Accounts & Dictionaries

Pretty self explanatory. This section focuses on resource on looking at our precolonial history and cultures. The links are for the most part linked to the English translations of the early Spanish accounts and other primary sources regarding our ancestors and history from nearby countries like China, Brunei, & Japan.

II. Books

Once again, pretty self explanatory. This section focuses on books regarding our history and cultures. Think of it as a list of a Pilipin@ library that you should check out and read.

III. Video Clips

Though not a lot, there are a few useful videos regarding various aspects of our history and cultures and this section will post links to those videos.

Front Page of the Boxer Codex

IV. Articles, Essays, & Online Archives

The final category, which again is pretty self explanatory.

This list will be the official reference list and will be periodically updated as I found more resources to add. If you have or find anything to add feel free to drop a comment below so I can add it to the list.

Image descriptions start.

OP is the “they don’t know” meme of a person standing in the corner at a party, edited to say, “they don’t know northern ireland is having the most insane election of all time”.

The first reblog is a Star Trek screencap of a character saying, “the Irish Unification of 2024,”

The second reblog is a Tweet by wint @ drill that says: hardcore becoming that guy who thinks the covid virus will be “not good,” overall, but on the bright side it might inexplicably unite ireland. The Tweet was posted 18 March 2020.

The third reblog is a repeat of OP, edited to say, “They don’t know the philippines is having the most insane election of all time”

there have been many cases already international clients dropping their commissions from filipino artists or avoiding commissioning filipino creators altogether, either due to a fear of consequences getting associated with us because of current events or the misguided notion that not supporting us somehow hurts the oppressive government we’re under. lemme address both those issues:

for the first reason, nothing will happen to you, a foreigner, for supporting filipinos. theres nothing to be afraid of, youre not in this country and wont suffer any consequences. many of us, however? we’re afraid. especially artists and creators who rely on commissions to support themselves and their families

for the second reason, you are not hurting our oppressors at all. you are hurting filipinos, majority of which did not want this to happen and are actively speaking out against the looming dictatorship. dropping filipino creators does nothing but hurt us. our inflation rates are predicted to rise, and money is fast becoming an even bigger issue for so so many

so if youre looking for art, dont give up on us. commission filipino artists and/or boost commission posts! 1 USD is literally enough to buy a meal here, it really helps. here is a link to a thread of filipino artists posting their commission rates. and here is another thread of filipino commission rates. tips and donations outside of comms to these artists help even more.

i’ll share this one last tidbit because i’m scared to get hunted down by the government, but i trust tumblr anyway- but there already have been rumors of people getting redtagged in the philippines for being vocal about this elections

what’s redtagging? wikipedia describes it as “the malicious blacklisting of individuals or organizations critical or not fully supportive of the actions of a sitting government administration in the country.” redtagging is used to mark down names of activists or, honestly, anyone opposing the government’s beliefs for potential arrests, or in worst case scenarios, extrajudicial killings.

this has been happening in the philippines for a long time, but it’s only recently reemerged during the reign of duterte. while i can’t compile all redtagging cases, here’s an example thread i made last year that highlighted some cases from april-may. it can give you the gist of how it works. and with the suppression of press freedom (google maria ressa, ceo of rappler, a filipino news site, who got arrested. she was eventually awarded the nobel peace prize for speaking out), there are many redtagging cases that are not spoken about. a friend from a certain university has talked to me about many of their classmates immediately being targeted. many filipinos are in danger

and i’m already hearing that the gov is trying to redtag more people who are just VOCAL about this elections. i was not even gonna post this because i was scared something’ll happen, but i think people deserve to know what’s going on before i stop posting about stuff completely.

freedom of speech is a privilege in the philippines. now that sara duterte, daughter of the current president, is going to head the department of education, it’s important to continue uplifting, supporting, and sharing news and posts by filipinos. bbm is a son of a dictator tyrant who murdered and tortured tens of thousands, and they will revise our history books despite years of fighting against them.

again, we are risking our lives trying to post about this, so if you see any post about the elections, it’s important to stay informed. it’s important to get mad at our government on our behalf because at some point, we won’t be able to. here’s some good posts i’ve found that summarize the elections/the marcos family’s wrongdoings pretty well (1|2|3|4|5). and if you have the audacity to go “why the hell are filipinos so stupid to vote for this man?” please read this.

and when marcos gets fully instated, i want you to cause a ruckus, a riot. we can’t let another marcos and duterte ruin our country once again.

i’m so fucking tired of international media reporting on the philippine election with the undertone of “poor uncivilized savage uneducated little brown asian country is so so sooooo stupid for electing a dictator’s son” as if there aren’t thousands on the streets protesting it, as if there isn’t electoral fraud, as if there aren’t people staying at voting precincts for over 24 hours just to be denied their right to vote, as if this isn’t a product of decades of US-backed imperialism and as if foreign powers don’t have a hand in this decades-long project of historical revisionism. if you aren’t reporting about the philippine election with these contexts in mind then don’t report at all because fuck you we do not need your pity nor your “help”

Sorry, reblogging this again because naalala ko lang ngayon + sorry kasi long post.

I have also been speaking here and calling out for the entire world to watch and listen to us, but for the LOVE OF GOD, DE-EXOTICIZE FILIPINOS.

Filipinos are NOT some bizarre creature you’ll only watch to marvel over our singing abilities or the fact that we come in numbers in a hospital, or whatever stereotypes are conjured up about us, only for you to move on with your day and not give two shits about us.

We are able to know the difference between right and wrong. We are able to fight for what is right for our country. We are able to hold discussions and discourses about social and political issues. Do not exoticize us for what is happening in the country.

If anything, learn and include the disinformation campaign that has been going on for god knows how long. Include how the ideas of regionalism, the utang ng loob/debt of gratitude mindset, patron-client relations are only some of the fundamental parts of the Filipino political culture.

Include the points that OP brought up, especially how there are people fighting against the electoral fraud, against vote-buying, and all the other stunts BS Uniteam pulled during this election season. There are people then and now who are fighting for justice, and there will be more who will do the same. Talk about them too.

The 3,257 dead/35,000 tortured/77 disappeared/70,000 incarcerated are not just random info to fill textbooks up about Martial Law. 2 million is not just a random number to reach a word count about EDSA Revolution. Those numbers are people whose lives were robbed by the Marcos administration. They are people who fought against his administration. Talk about them too.

There are people who rallied too during May 9 (in North EDSA) and 10 (Intramuros and Iloilo City), 2022. Universities have called for academic walkouts. SocMed platforms everywhere, including this very platform, are talking about it, trying to reach other people about what is happening now. Talk about them too.

We are more nuanced than the stereotypes and generalizations the world has created about us. We are people, just like you. Treat us the same.

Right now in the Philippines, the son of a dictator is being voted into office. Despite attempts by a very dedicated and amazing group of people, he is going to win this election. Updates will follow if I learn more about donations or movements working against this man and his continuation of the Marcos’ abuse of the Philippines.

Thank you for your time

The legitimacy of this election is being called into question, considering the fact that many election officials are associated with the Marcos family, along with reports of ballot tampering, both bribery and physical tampering have been reported, with current registered complaints at 3000

Also look at this chart of the voting difference between the two

Not even trying to hide the tidy 47% split

Please look up kakampinks and leni robredo online. They and the many people working with them are doing their best to make the islands of the Philippines a better place

exactly this. it’s what i was going for when i mentioned how foreign powers have their hands dirty in meddling with our elections. before cambridge analytica and facebook fucked over the US 2016 elections they fucked with ours here in the same year. and now facebook, youtube, and tiktok are willing accomplices to a massive disinformation and historical revisionist campaign because it makes them a quick buck.
