i think one of the smallest, most innocuous things about fanon sans that subtly shifted the way people interpret his character away from canon over time is how people saw this chilled-out lazy guy who sleeps a lot so they obviously drew him with sleepy/sleazy half-lidded eyes all the time
like i said, it’s completely innocent! it makes sense too. but personality-wise? i think it takes away from the fact that this man is staring into your soul, unblinking, eyes wide open like some kind of fucked up little owl in like, 99% of his sprites
how people tend to draw sans
canon sans, 99% of the time
oh by the by, y'know who DOES canonically make the smug half-lidded eyes expression?
[ID: Undertale dialogue box of Papyrus saying “(AUDIBLE WINK)”. He’s making a smug expression, and his eyes are half closed. END ID]
yeah

- The Prestige
in the moments before the eruptions
of our cruelest corners pull us apart, friends,
remind me to tell you of the times I have seen
the way a good season has lingered in the
hopes of dancing along our faces one last
time, and how that has made me decide that
I must stay here, wretched as the staying
may feel. only the fool arms themself
with the tools of undoing and nothing
beyond. I want to die a little less than I did
yesterday and a little less than I did the day
before. offered the chance to make amends
for what we have endured together,
I will open the hidden vault: all heartbreak
is a descendant of the untouched
imagination. into the hollow void I’ve left
I echo the names of all who have pulled me
from the depths of my own design.
and underneath the known haunting
of invented darkness, I promise you
it isn’t all that bad. we can all mourn
until the mourning trembles out a celebration.
