The Saint:The Well Meaning Mayor (2.12, ITC, 1963)

“Well, that’s the best I can do.”

“That’s fine, fine.”

“It’s obvious to anyone who looks at you that you’ve been in a fight!”

“Mrs. Purdell, I’m - I’m sorry if you disapprove.”

“Mr. Templar, I think you’re both out of your minds.”

Simon is in little england (the fictional Seatondean to be precise) where a mayoral election is#being contested amid accusations of corruption. the source of this swindling? concrete! it’s a 60s concrete tv episode! happy days#on one side we have incumbent mayor Leslie Sands; a late developer as a screen actor (he’d only been acting a few years at this point)#Sands would have his own starring series in Cluff a few years later (like Wilmer’s Sherlock Holmes‚ Cluff began as a pilot play in the#series Detective). opposite him is Norman Bird‚ made up to look older than he actually was (he wasn’t even 40 at this point but like#Richard Vernon he seemed to be perpetually middle aged). another well staged fight scene and some unlikely high wire walking on a#construction site make up for a rather sad looking studio beach set and an appalling performance by an uncredited child who discovers a#crashed car (‘MUM LOOKAT THISS’). the rest of the cast are ill served by a script which really only bothers with Templar and Sands#but it’s not a bad episode by any means. a nice change of pace from international jet setting. more shows should feature concrete..

lol, no, i have not watched this one, but now you tell me it has corruption and concrete, well… XD

The Saint:The Work of Art (2.7, ITC, 1963)

“Mère Lafond, I think it might be wiser if we were to co-operate.”

“Ohh, you have changed, my disreputable buccaneer, co-operate!”

“Yes, but in this case it would be better.”

“In this case, I go home. My cat is better company than this!”

The Saint:Iris (2.8, ITC, 1963)

“I’ll take you to the bank. We’ll get a list of the serial numbers.”

“Inspector, may I make a suggestion?”

“No.”

“Ask a silly question…”

#the saint#iris#itc#leslie charteris#bill strutton#john gilling#roger moore#barbara murray#david bauer#ivor dean#cyril luckham#ferdy mayne#john ronane#tony wager#barry linehan#meadows white#april wilding#larry taylor#margaret nolan#he is here! Ivor Dean finally arrives as the permanent Inspector Claud Eustace Teal (although funnily enough he goes unnamed in this debut#episode; he is definitely Teal tho‚ per the end credits). Dean is immediately Teal‚ idk i just feel like he gets the part immediately; his#absolute disdain for Templar‚ the long suffering hangdog face‚ the refusal to even entertain the idea of humouring or empathising with the#civilians brought into the case.. oh his Teal may not be entirely book accurate‚ but he fully embodies this tv character as much as Moore#does Templar. this week’s case concerns both a protection racket and blackmail‚ with a background of 60s theatre; Simon is very snobby#about the (fictional) play‚ as is p much everyone else (i thought it sounded interesting!). Bauer returns for hia third guest star stint#and baby John Ronane gets a couple of scenes‚ but of course the big attraction here is Barbara Murray. The Plane Makers was just beginning#its second series around this time (the series where Barbara joined the cast) but Babs was a genuine film star in her youth(er) so would be#well known to 60s audiences. she’s wonderful of course (need it be said) and brings her usual louche charm and array of interesting hats to#the role. ironically‚ of the cast‚ it’s probably Barry Linehan (here playing a gangland thug as he so often did on tv) who had the most#experience of the kind of budget experimental theatre the ‘actors’ in the episode are involved in

I watched this one and I even remember it!  It had Barbara Murray in and she even mostly won against the general sexism, although it was a close-run thing at some points.

The Saint:The Romantic Matron (2.18, ITC, 1964)

“Mrs. Carrington, what are you looking for? Adventure?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing, I do it all the time. I just happen to have a little more experience than you.”

Patrick Troughton interrogates the Saint as an unnamed Buenos Aires police inspector (perhaps an ancestor of Ramón Salamander…?) in The Saint:The RomanticMatron (2.18, ITC, 1964)

The Saint:The Noble Sportsman (2.17, ITC, 1964)

“Sorry to be so mysterious.”

“Why be sorry? You know I thrive on the mysterious.”
