They’d stayed at the party, hoping to catch Adolphine or Jacob somewhere, though Adolphine had given Isabella back to Charlie and disappeared before he had time to speak with her, and according to Katherine, Jacob hadn’t felt like coming.

Owen was standing off to the side, scanning the room for Adolphine, when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around and jumped when he saw Mara Pontmercy. “Hello Owen,” she said kindly, giving him an innocent smile.

He glanced to the side, then remembered his mother wasn’t with him. He forced a smile. “Hello, Mara.”
