i hope that from now on, every frog tour of the Haus has pie

like it gets added to the bylaws and every year after Bitty graduates a senior has to teach a junior how to make pies for the frog tour

Imagine the day before the first frog tour after Bitty graduates, with Chowder and Dex and the tadpoles practically in tears trying to get the pie crust right, and Nursey walks in and is all “chill, we can buy pie from the store.”

And there’s just this horrified sucking in of breath, and Dex has to physically restrain Chowder while their goalie and new captain screams, THAT’S NOT WHAAT BITTY WOULD DO!

Every year when they make the pie for the tour they play it up like the huge deal that it is, using Bitty’s original recipes and everything, which they keep either A) tucked into one of those adorable old-fashioned recipe boxes or B) framed on the wall of the Haus kitchen (I haven’t decided which I like better).

When the frogs visit for the first time they sit around and eat pie and Chowder and Dex and Nursey and all the rest of the Old Frogs (who are now seniors of course) are just like “We made this pie in the memory of our amazing captain, Eric Richard Bittle, who is sadly no longer with us–” and one of the frogs is like “holy shit did he die” and Chowder starts to say “no he’s fine” but Nursey (who I imagine has become less obnoxious and was sort of like Ransom and Holster’s protégée) cuts him off like “YES, POOR SOUL, HE HAUNTS THE HAUS TO THIS VERY DAY….!”

Thus Bitty becomes a Haus ghost even though he isn’t dead. His name is legend. It’s said that his poor old oven gave out and he was so distraught that he died of grief– “IN THIS VERY KITCHENNNNN,” Nursey cries, waving his hands. The frogs aren’t sure what to think but Dex backs Nursey up in his quiet, sincere way and they start to believe it.

Cut to graduation. Bitty and Jack come to town, and Bitty decides to visit the Haus because he arrived first and Jack’s not getting in until that night. He goes in through the front door, which is unlocked because Chowder (bless his heart) finally made peace with the LAX team through persistent cheerfulness and the skillful application of Bitty’s own summer berry crumble. The Haus no longer has to worry about LAX bros getting in and ruining things or, failing that, egging the front porch on their way to morning practice.

Bitty notes with approval that the disgusting green couch is gone, and the curtains and windows have been washed. He wanders into the kitchen. It’s empty. The oven is new or at least very clean, and he just can’t help himself. Wouldn’t it be a nice surprise for everyone to come home to a nice fresh pie? So he puts on an apron and is halfway through rolling out the crust when someone comes into the Haus.

“Oh,” he says, and Bitty turns around. “I’m sorry, are you… lost? This kitchen isn’t for public use…”

“Oh, no, no,” Bitty says, and brushes flour off of his hands. It’s everywhere now, he realizes – on his face, in his hair – but it can’t be helped. “I used to live here. I’m Eric Bittle. Bitty.” He holds out a hand to shake but the stranger  is backing away, shaking his head.

“This isn’t your kitchen any more, bro,” he says. Bitty shrinks a little. He knows that, he really does… but there was always something about Samwell that was home to him, and this kitchen most of all. He wants to tell this to the frog, but the frog in question is no longer standing before him. In fact, he’s diving for a cabinet on the other side of the sink. He throws it open and pulls out a rolling pin, one that Bitty recognizes. He left it behind because the Haus didn’t have one, and he could spare the extra.

The frog brandishes it at him, not attacking, just holding it up like a shield.

“Apple turnovers!” he shouts. “Pumpkin pie! Blueberry crumble!”

“What are you doing?” Bitty asks, very confused.

“I’m banishing you! Lemon squares! Begone, ghost!”

“What?”

“Gingerbread!”

“What are you saying?!” Bitty asks, raising his voice so he can be heard above the frog’s.

“Nursey warned us about you! This is the only way to set your spirit to rest!”

“Ah, I see.” The frog continues to hold the rolling pin, listing all the baked goods he can think of while Bitty pulls out his phone, opens his contacts, and calls a number.

“Derek. Malik. Nurse.”

mandy and jenny probably think it’s hilarious and like to Spook the frogs in the kitchen.

This is amazing. And also, OH YES when Nursey, Dex and Chowder are seniors they will totally be the Old Frogs.

I absolutely love that we’re essentially told that hawks has suffered the same neglect and abuse as several of the LOV members only for y'all to immediately call him an abuse apologist for not wanting Endeavor dead and say that it’s not an excuse for what he did…

Like I’ve had to watch y'all rationalize serial killing, child murder, kidnapping, and conspiring to commit genocide bc the LOV got their feelings hurt as children by “"society”“, but when hawks suffered the EXACT same thing y'all immediately dismiss it.

I can’t wait until something eventually happens to one of the LOV members again somewhere down the line and y'all start whining about "horikoshi hating victims!1!!1” again.

Just drives my point home that y'all don’t care about this story’s victims unless they’re the ones you like lmao. This feels like the Dabi reveal all over again where y'all were cooing over Dabi reducing his own brother’s abuse and attempting to burn him alive while calling DEKU of all people an abuse apologist for telling him to fuck off. You all give me a massive headaches, I hope you all learn to actually care about abuse victims instead of randomly caring when you want to make a shitty text post about how evil and awful Horikoshi is for making the LOV face the consequences of their actions.

When Gaon directly asks, practically begs, Yohan to be trustworthy

Judge Yohan essentially is like ‍♂️

But everytime Judge Yohan does something big in the courtroom he always looks to Gaon to see his response.

To see if Gaon understands and approves. Which he doesn’t always, but Judge Yohan needs him to understad that even if he is not conventional he is consistent. He is always clear on his enemies. He never lied to Gaon about that. And isn’t that enough? Sure, there is a lot that Gaon doesn’t know about Judge Yohan but Gaon isn’t an open book either!! And if you look at it another way Judge Yohan has been more honest with Gaon than Gaon has been with him. Gaon lives in his house for goodness sake!!! Thats pretty transparent!!!

Anyway, my point is, it seems that Yohan is counting on Gaon’s curiosity and the bit of trust he does have in him to keep him around until he is fully convinced that Judge Yohan is doing the right thing. But will Gaon ever believe that Judge Yohan’s ends justify his means??!?! I dont know!! I can’t tell what the writers are going to do!! and it’s torture!!

let’s learn derogatory fantasy words

The Japanese word for the ‘mutant’-type of quirk is 「異形」 - Igyo, which can be translated into [variant/fantastic/grotesque/strange-looking/suspicious-looking/irregular]. Basically it means ‘different, in a bit of bad way. I’m going to use 'Igyou’ as a placeholder for that word for now.

The first time we ever hear the word, it’s spoken by a Villain with a mutant quirk whose part of the group attacking USJ in Chapter 14. Dude says something like, “Eraserhead, you can’t erase my quirk because I’m 「異形型!」” - Igyou-gata(gata being 'type).

The CRC here, they’re called the 異形排斥主義集団: Igyou Exclusionist Group. Spinner notes that they’re against “異形型の人間” - Igyou-gata no ningen - Igyou-type-humans. and they’re shit bastards.

This is when he tells us:

ちなみに「異形」は好ましくない言葉だ。まア皆日常的に使ってるがかしこまった場では気を付けた方がいい

lit. By the way, 'Igyou’ is an unfavorable word. Well, everyone uses it on a daily basis, but in a proper/polite place, be careful to reconsider.

Not too sure if the unfavorable is his opinion, or in general; could be either? either way, he does explicitly say that in formal situations (「かしこまった」 - kashikimatta - which is like funerals or weddings or fancy official things, uptight places) it’s better not to use it.

As far as I know, which doesn’t mean much because I haven’t read through the series in japanese to notice this, and I’m no translator, there’s no other word used for someone with such a quirk. ‘Mutant’ in Japanese is literally just 'mutant’ borrowed from English; mutation is a whole different word together (突然変異); and in the CRC blurb in Volume 23 Extras, Horikoshi says of the targets of the CRC as “姿形の変わった” - sugatakatachi no kawatta - peculiar appearance, which is more of a description than like a label?

Viz just uses 'heteromorph’ for Igyou. Other translations I’ve seen is 'mutant’ (jaimini scanlation) or 'grotesque’ (mangastream scanlation).

Personally for a fic once I used 'grotesque’, 'aberrant’ as the insults and 'heteromorph’ as the okay word. Well either way, it’s still singling out one person as super different/unusual, so no good choice?

please, please do not trust this to be 100% accurate, my Japanese is bad, thank you

physically disabled people are often sent the message that they can’t be sexual. that they don’t have a sexuality.

denying us our sexuality and gender is a component of the infantilisation of disabled people. people assume we’re too feeble to be thinking about sex, and too confused to think about gender.

so who is saying that disabled people can’t be queer?

doctors who won’t let disabled people access gender-affirming processes.

“’Black Sails’ reimagines representation in period dramas by making it integral to the show itself.

Flint’s internal struggle is not figuring out or discovering his sexuality – rather Flint’s character arc exists entirely because of his sexuality. His sexuality is not a prop meant to bolster another more important character or storyline. James Flint would quite simply not exist if he had not fallen in love with another man. Indeed, few plots on the show would exist if not for the fact that various women fell in love with women and men with men.

The driving narrative of this show is the battle for Nassau, a battle waged because of Flint’s love for another man and because this love was taken from him.

Flint is seen as a monster by England — he is a vicious pirate, guilty of innumerable crimes. He was a monster to them before he did any of that, though — he is told his relationship with Thomas is too loathsome and profane to be forgiven, and he is cast out because of it. The trope of the predatory homosexual is deeply rooted in our society. Homoerotic undertones in supernatural fiction have long cast gay people as monsters.

“Black Sails” takes this trope and attacks it. The show insists, rightfully so, that LGBTQ+ people have always existed, but it does not sugarcoat that existence. “They hang men for this,” Mrs. Hamilton tells Flint hours before their worlds all come crashing down, and she is right. Regardless of whether he’s a pirate or a respectable lieutenant, Flint will always be a monster to England, because of his sexuality.

In the third season, our crew is stranded on an island housing a matriarchal colony of marooned and escaped slaves. These people have formed a society entirely in secret. They exist outside the grasp of England’s fist because the crown does not know they exist.  “Black Sails” is about people who have been cast out of society, it is about “monsters.” They are gay, women, marooned and escaped slaves. They don’t exist within civilization because civilization cannot allow them to exist. Their very presence challenges the entire façade, because civilization only survives if people cannot imagine it any other way.

In one of the most powerful scenes of the four-season show, Flint acknowledges this construct: “They paint the world full of shadows, and then tell their children to stay close to the light. Their light. Their reasons, their judgments. Because in the darkness, there be dragons. But it isn’t true. We can prove that it isn’t true. In the dark, there is discovery, there is possibility, there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it.” The significance of an explicitly gay character making this declaration cannot be overstated.

For a shining moment, the show allows you to imagine a world in which this coalition of outcasts won. An alternate reality in which the New World was wrenched from England’s hands by an alliance of gay and black men and women. Of course, we know they did not win. Homophobia would become the law of the land in the New World, same as the Old. Slavery would flourish, and the world as we know it today would be built on the backs of enslaved peoples.

So what, then, is the point of “Black Sails”? It is just a story, with very little basis in history. Why imagine a world that could have been when we have to live in the one we have? Thinking of his happiness with his male love, author E.M. Forster once wrote “I see beyond my own happiness and intimacy, occasional glimpses of the happiness of thousands of others whose names I shall never hear, and I know that there is a great unrecorded history.”

“Black Sails” is imagining one of those thousands of unrecorded histories.

The show is an examination of the stories we create of, for and about ourselves. It is about how our narratives are wrested from us and twisted, and it is about how we fight to reclaim those narratives for ourselves. It is the lies we construct and the lies we are told, and the eternal struggle to maintain some truth in the midst of both.

The series closes with a character insisting that, “A story is true. A story is untrue. As time extends, it matters less and less. The stories we want to believe. … Those are the ones that survive, despite upheaval and transition, and progress. Those are the stories that shape history.”

We know from the beginning of the show that Flint’s war against England and civilization itself will not succeed. England’s power eventually waned, yes, but not before piracy was crushed and slavery was firmly entrenched. Homosexuality was still a criminal offense in my lifetime. Despite all of this, “Black Sails” is the power of stories we create in opposition to the stories civilization is built on. As long as we can tell those stories, we exist.

As long as we exist, we triumph.

-Danielle Hilborn
