I read a lot of fanfic, it’s really the only way my stubborn ND brain can be convinced to transition from awake to asleep. The works listed here didn’t particularly help with that because they’re are so well written, suspenseful, fun, etc that the only way to put them down was to read the whole thing (or as far as published, they’re not all complete) - but I can live with that. I have so much admiration for anyone who has the patience, talent and follow-through to write anything at all, and to then share it with the rest of us just makes you an absolute hero - thank you for the free serotonin!! ♥

Pepper insisted she take the day off to settle in New Asgard and see the sights.
Fallon fought the feeling of guilt that came with taking the time. She was meant to take over for Nancy, but so far, all she’d done was be the cause of all new problems. And now, with Jay back in the picture, she just wanted to hide and never come out.
But life didn’t work that way. If she wanted her children to have some semblance of normalcy, Fallon had to do her part to give it to them.
In that aspect, she dressed Corbin for the day, returned to Thor’s bedroom and dressed in yesterday’s jeans. They were surprisingly still clean as she hadn’t been feeding her messy mini-mes diner and a sunny yellow sweater that constantly bared one shoulder or the other.
It was supposedly trendy. She just hoped it wouldn’t get annoying by the end of the day.
Then, with a cute pair of burgundy ankle boots she was damn sure weren’t part of her wardrobe before, Fallon collected Corbin and headed downstairs.
She had to stop herself from falling in love with their house.

“homer’s enemy” is such a fascinating simpsons episode because although it was largely panned by viewers for being too dark (even by the show’s standards), it’s gone on to become thenumber 1-rated simpsons episode of all time [according to IMDB] and most people who were young kids at the time the episode first aired (myself included) consider it one of the most iconic and classic episodes of the series
like damn, it was always a running joke that homer is much too incompetent and lazy for his line of work and yet somehow still manages to live in a decent 2-story home in a nice neighborhood but this episode hit it on the fucking nose with how unfair and ludicrous it all is
The show creators wanted to make this episode unsettling. They wanted to show what would happen if a real person ended up in Springfield.
The message of “Homer’s Enemy” is far more Chesterton’s Fence than Peter Principle, and I think a lot of people miss that.
Everything Frank Grimes says is both obvious and true to the viewer.
The twist is that Frank Grimes is from our world, but Springfield isn’t. Where he ended up, nuclear power plants ooze glowing green goop and undereducated drunks pour sodas on control panels to short them out rather than investigate error messages. In our world, Springfield would be a slightly more colorful Pripiyat, the town evacuated in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster. But that keeps not happening!
The fundamental logic of Springfield is that of TV: big stuff happens, but it all has a way of returning to the status quo after 22 minutes. The Simpsons constantly makes reference to all the outlandish things Homer did, as if this mid-30s man actually did all the things he supposedly did over the last three decades of TV. They still callback Poochie, for chrissakes! It’s TV given self-awareness and this license to acknowledge its built-in logic.
For all his supposed knowledge and competence, Grimes’ skills of observation failed him miserably. He was driven to madness by a world that didn’t play by his rules. The lesson of “Homer’s Enemy” is that you can’t demand that a world you barely understand follow a set of rules that you do.

I saw a recent interview with Bill Oakley (one of the writers during the time) where he compared Frank Grimes to Superintendent Chalmers - one of my favorite Simpsons characters because of how he plays a similar “only sane man” sort of role, but only ever asks a few questions before dropping it and taking everything at face value. He’s learned just not to care, because he knows it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Oakley sums it up really well:
“Chalmers is able to live in Springfield and succeed, because he knows not to ask too many questions. Whereas Frank just wouldn’t let it go. He wouldn’t let it go, and he died.”
One of my favourite pop culture useless pieces of information that I know is the fact that trends in horror movies can tell you about the general fears of the world at any given time in cinematic history.
Sorta!
1940s - You have people still alive that remember Jack the Ripper, you have the Axeman of New Orleans and two world wars. The classics are being made for shock escapism and dark stalkers are also popular (usually trusting people turning out to be the enemy).
1950s - post-nuclear bomb. Giant monsters, or unknown blobs are the trend.
1970s/1980s - modern era begins, and serial killers are becoming known and prominent. Slasher films are the trend. The Cold War also drives the fear of invasion, so a few alien films come out in this time.
1990s - a horror movie lull, and lull in wars and disturbances.
2000s - fear of invasions and biological warfare. Zombie movies become the trend.
Here you go! It’s just a random article, but it’s a fun starting point. It outlines the ideas better than what I did above. Fears, politics etc all play a role.
This is what happens when a nerd with a Classics degree thinks ‘what would happen if Kara’s pod landed in like 520 BCE and people thought she was a daughter of Athena’ and then thinks about it really hard for about two years
The woman stops her pacing, setting her pale and unevenly-coloured eyes on Kara, and in that moment Kara truly understands - for the very first time - how Helen of Troy’s face could have been beautiful enough to start a war.
“Enough. I’m tired of being passed from one person to the next. Tell me,” the woman says fiercely after Kara has been quiet for too long. “Who are you?”
“I’m, um,” Kara says, wiggling her feet nervously until they’re buried in the sand up to the ankle. “I’m Kara.”
The woman stares at Kara, incredulous and silent. It stretches out between them, those lingering questions and Kara’s unwillingness to answer them, until finally the woman’s shoulders sink and she breaks and deflates with a small, disbelieving laugh.
“Right. Well, I’m Lena,” she says, finally seeming to realize that her dress is torn and pulling it tighter around her body, “and if you don’t mean me harm, then I suppose you just saved me.”

Kara’s pod crashes in 6th century Greece, her cousin nowhere to be found, and she grows up eager to emulate the heroes whose myths comforted her in the wake of Krypton’s destruction. When she accidentally reveals her powers and the world views her as a demigod, Kara begins to understand just how dangerous that can be.

I did my very first artist alley at AOD2015! I did a lot of research beforehand to help prepare, but one thing that I thought was missing from all the articles and blog posts I read was a step-by-step guide from the perspective of a beginner. So, I decided to put one together myself! I’m not entirely sure if this is the right way of preparing, but this is what I did and it worked for me.
