AfterEllen.com: De que maneira você se define como artista?
Zolita: Minha arte é como um pacote completo. Eu cresci tocando bluegrass no violão. Depois eu fiz fotografia no colegial. Atualmente, eu vou pra Escola de Cinema e Interpretação da Universidade de Nova York Then, então sou realmente interessada nisso também. E depois, voltei a me interessar em música novamente. Então acho que esse pacote é formado por essa combinação de elementos.
AE: Como você equilibra os estudos e sua música?
Zolita: Ficou um pouco complicado. Eu não durmo muito, é difícil. Esse semestre especialmente porque estou mais envolvida com aulas de educação vs aulas de filmagens, que geralmente envolvem muito mais leitura e trabalho. Mas eu não desistiria, eu realmente gosto da Academia.
AE: De onde suas raízes de bluegrass (gênero musical) advém?
Zolita: Quando tinha por volta de seis ou sete anos, meu pai começou a me ensinar violão e comecei a participar de competições, na verdade, há vídeos antigos meus tocando quando era mais nova no youtube, mas quando fiz 13 e cheguei à adolescência, tudo o que queria era tocar música pop. Bluegrass não era mais tão legal naquela idade. Recentemente voltei a me apaixonar por esse estilo.
AE: Quando você começou a se interessar em fazer produções inspiradas em R&B (rythms and blues)

O produtor com quem trabalho viu minha apresentação na festa Galore Magazine fashion week, no último outono e me deu o seu cartão, e foi assim que tudo isso surgiu. É realmente gratificante trabalhar com ele porque escrevo minhas músicas no violão e elas parecem cantadas e escritas para o Folk, e ele injeta essa sensibilidade R&B nelas. Eu não consigo definir o estilo que criamos juntos, mas parece legal.
AE:E como foi a experiência de trabalhar com Ømen?
Zolita: Foi extremamente incrível. Tem tantas coisas que ele possui. Ele é meu mentor atualmente. Especialmente com o lançamento do EP, ele soube exatamente o que dizer. Ele tem tanta experiência, o que ajuda de uma forma inigualável. E não é diferente no estúdio, com pequenos improvisos e essas pequenas coisas que ele faz com que eu diga que, originalmente, não faziam parte da música, coisas sobre as quais nunca pensaria. É realmente maravilhoso.
AE:Você pode nos contar um pouco da formação de seu EP Immaculate Conception?
Zolita: Antes das produções desse EP, eu escrevia apenas música pop virtualmente. É relativamente mais fácil escrever um estilo observado do que um pessoal, e eu não sei, eu não me sentia no direito de escrever sobre amor até que eu me apaixonei. E “Explosion” foi o começo de todas as canções que estão relacionadas, de certa forma, no EP. E, bom, eu me apaixonei pela minha melhor amiga, que não me amava, e essa é a história. Mas acredito ser incrível viver esse tempo de minha vida na cidade de Nova York, onde isso tornou-se usual. E eu acho que a visibilidade de arte com temas queer, em geral, é mais importante do que a visibilidade de um artista queer, propriamente dito. A cultura pop precisa de uma representação das pessoas LGBT mais sincera e honesta e da experiência delas - não do constante arquétipo que é apresentado.
AE: Tem qualquer parte disso sendo divulgada? Que se tornou mais legal não ser nem gay nem lésbica, mas essa ideia sem gênero de “sou queer e faço música queer”. Quanto disso é algo que você incorpora e acha incrível e libertador para se expressar e quanto disso é “Só funciona por enquanto”?
Zolita: Isso é a única coisa que não gostaria que minha música fosse. Há alguns anos, quando comecei a fazer isso, pensei assim, “Nossa, virou uma tendência agora e posso divulgar em cima disso” mas sinto que agora, e com esse vídeo também, não é apenas com as pessoas queer que posso me conectar, é apenas experiência honesta. Não quero que olhem para os meus vídeos e vejam “arte queer” porque envolve um cenário de mulher com mulher. Pessoas não olham para ambientes heterossexuais e rotulam-nos como “arte hétero”, entende? Quero que olhem para meus vídeos e vejam experiência humana honesta, orgânica. E até agora, pelas respostas que recebi, acho que se traduz dessa forma porque é vulnerável e feito a partir de uma experiência real de minha vida. Não é espetacularizado ou dramatizado.
AE:E o que vem agora?
Zolita: Abrir para as pessoas e, definitivamente, fazer mais shows ao vivo. Tentando descobrir como meus shows ao vivo serão, já que a minha música é um pouco diferente do que a pop, a qual envolve mais movimentação. Talvez terá um aspecto mais ritualístico para a performance ao vivo. E com certeza mais vídeos de música.
AE:Qual é a coisa que não seríamos capazes de achar sobre você em uma pesquisa profunda na internet?
Zolita: Sou obcecada com country. pop country. Uma opinião impopular em Nova yorke, com certeza. Tem esse duo chamado Maddie e Tae e a música dele ‘Girl in a Country Song" – é um tipo de retaliação ao país dos homens. É tão divertida, você deveria dar uma checada. Ambas têm 18 e a canção fala sobre como as mulheres são retratadas na música country.
