• • •(Yein reaches forwards to begin the recording, an extended arm obscuring his features as he pushes the button on the rear of the device. He leans back into frame, waiting for the red light to blink to life before speaking. Behind him are (mostly empty) metal shelves, normally used to hold ingredients and other product, now cleared and serving as a backdrop. The walk-in at the restaurant is not the best setting, but it guarantees privacy. The chill causes goose bumps to rise from his arms, but hopefully the camera won’t be able to pick them up.) H-hello (He starts, freezing up and immediately stumbling over his words. Blinking hard, it takes a second to regain his train of thought, to remember the script he’d written earlier. Confidence. Charisma. Charm. Those are the three things he needs to exude, despite clearly being in possession of none. He clears his throat, and begins again.) Hello, my name is Seon Yein, I’m nineteen years old and currently work in my parent’s restaurant. We make the best Samgyetang in Seoul so be sure to come see us if you’re in the area! (The tone is a little too enthusiastic, the smile a little to forced and the delivery slightly shakier than ideal, but it’s as good as it’s going to get. Silence hangs awkwardly, lingering for a little too long. Was he forgetting something? Was there more to say?) I… I don’t have much experience performing besides sometimes busking with my guitar on weekends but… but it has always been my dream to be on stage, so thank you for your consideration. (Ad libbed and littered with pauses as the thoughts formulate. Perhaps he should re-record this one more time…)

▸ ▸ ▸ WHY AM I HERE.

• • •(It’s a question that he doesn’t know how to answer. How much is he supposed to reveal? Will divulging too many details be seen as fishing for sympathy? Yein clears his throat again, looking down the lens and reapplying the mask of faux-confidence as best he can. Confidence. Charisma. Charm. He repeats internally.) I have been singing for as long as I can remember, but have never been able to put myself out there in this way for whatever reason. To be able to perform and inspire people is my goal. (The smile that had teased at the corners of his lips falters for a fraction of a second, his eyes flashing with sadness. He hesitates. Perhaps he should leave it there, say no more, he thinks. A few more seconds pass, he fights of the chill before giving out.) My family have had to deal with hardships in the past, and I have done what I can to support them. I hope that following this path will allow me to become a pillar for them, and to thank them by making life more comfortable. (And then he bounces back to his previous enthusiastic demeanour, all wide, toothy grins and beaming eyes. Again he isn’t entirely satisfied, but no matter how many attempts he has it likely won’t get any better than this. And so Yein presses his hands together and bows his head to the lens before reaching forwards once more and fumbling with the buttons to end the recording.)
