Dead animal warning!!!

I have the coolest friends. One of them texted me this evening to let me know of a rta fox just off the highway. It took me a good 40 minutes to figure out how to collect her safely, but I managed it :)

She’s the first Minnesotan fox I’ve ever seen. Shame she’s dead, but still very beautiful and precious. She will be buried in one of my flowerpots, alongside a toad and a raccoon from last year.

So here is my possum friend. Smaller than I expected, but still too big for me to collect right now :( the bag I got from the shop wasn’t nearly big enough to contain him and all his various fluids. But I moved him to the grass so he wouldn’t end up more mutilated. RIP.

Aughhhh vc tumblr help meeeee

Ok so I’ve been a neglectful vulture recently bc it’s summer and its gross and hot and all my maceration buckets really need tending but…I am also autistic and super smell-sensitive…so they’re just sitting out there. For months now. I can’t even muster the courage to process the raccoon I picked up a few weeks ago that was just fur/cartilage/bones left, bc it got rained on and is now the worst kind of musty….

Coming to my current problem……I just spotted a possum in the middle of a busy road! And it’s literally the first possum I’ve ever seen in Minnesota! They’re not as prevalent here as in other states bc they aren’t overly adapted to our winters (their fingers/ears/tail are susceptible to frostbite). And I’m excited! But also idk how to bring myself to go collect it. Because of smell. And I don’t have anything in my car to deal with the smell.

But the skull looked intact!

Aaah.

Ok I’m gonna go get some bags from a shop down the road and I’m gonna do it. I just had to get that out first.

Dead animal warning!

My dog and I found this headless mallard in the gutter in our neighborhood the other day. Aside from the blood puddle underneath it there was no mess, no feathers or anything in the street, an the head was nowhere to be found.

The more I think about it the less I’m able to convince myself that it was a traffic accident or a predation kill. What animal would just take the head? And no roadkill that I’ve ever seen has a neat decapitation with no mess in the road at all.

Which leads me to the unpleasant conclusion that there’s a sociopath in my neighborhood???? I hope not. If anyone has any other theories I’d love to hear them. Also I was sad to just leave him there but I didn’t know what else to do, put him up on someone’s lawn?? Argh.

Well, I committed to the thing. I bought the sibling capsule vending machine to @nonasuch ’s, after almost a month of waffling about it. The goal is to have a cross between a wunderkammer and an automat. Black light. Potentially cursed toy surprises… “toy” being a flexible term.

If any of this sounds cool to you, and you’d like to help with set-up costs, donations are appreciated! Paypal.me/strangehours with whatever works. (I lost my income source for this month, so I’m left to pull it together by bits and pieces instead of all at once.) <3

A cursed object vending machine possibly the most absurd thing I’ve done for my business yet, but I’m fairly certain that the ability to release serotonin is the real selling point here.

so excited to see how yours turns out! and very glad to have more weird vending machines in the world

Ooh, sweet! As if I need more reasons to order patches and pins … all of these potential objects look amazing, like things to work into pieces of jewelry and spell foci.

Can I just…like…pay you to ship me one of each?

@deliriumcrow - Etsy only offers up yea so much potential cursed-object-toy-surprises in bulk lots, but it’s a good starting point for a mood board. The minerals choices are curated to my own tastes I must admit, but it’s not complete. My list of an ideal mix has more of a mudlarking vibe to it, or maybe a really good cache of things a crow has been hoarding. (Weirdly, if you make a blind box fancy enough, people will want one just to know what’s inside.)

@daemonvatis - I’d have to do a cost estimate of how many eggs would be feasible to stuff in a box before it’d be worth it to pay for shipping? (I have not ordered eggs yet, see previous “I have to pull it together in bits & pieces.”) If you’re in the US, I will have the Cursed Object vending machine at my Oddities & Curiosities Expo gigs this year. Probably easier to seek it out in person if that’s available to you. Strange Hours Atelier will be at the following:

  • Oddities & Curiosities Expo Charlotte, NC | Feb 26th
  • Oddities & Curiosities Expo Chicago, IL | Apr 2nd
  • Oddities & Curiosities Expo Columbus, OH | Apr 30th
  • Oddities & Curiosities Expo Detroit, MI | July 16th
  • Oddities & Curiosites Expo Richmond, VA | August 13th
  • Oddities & Curiosities Expo Buffalo, NY | August 20th

I may have other pop-ups more local to my HQ in Pittsburgh throughout the year, but those are much shorter notice. Uh. Stay tuned, I guess?

An overhead photo of a bin full of empty plastic Easter egg capsules, predominantly in gloss black but also scattered with metallic gold and translucent glow-in-the-dark colors. The bin is lit on three sides by purple LED lights, giving the eggs an eerie atmosphere.

THE EGGS.

ARE.

HERE.

(Also the vending machine, but it’s going to need a spa day or two to get it presentable.)

A thank you gift I’m working on.

(Please don’t use or repost without my permission!)

Found this c.hipmunk on like my first week here, can’t remember if I ever posted about it. ANYWAY I decided to finally skin it this morning and god was it a bitch. The skull was completely crushed so it took me quite a while to skin out the head. I never fully intended it to be taxidermy quality, so I don’t know why I skinned it from the back… also totally I ripped off one of its front legs so I just lobbed the other one off for symmetry

Anyway after it’s all pickled and tanned and whatever I’m just gonna sew up the back and then bada bing bada boom we got ourselves a funky lil wall hanger

Some c.oyote rug progress pics!! Still not quite done, as we need to model the lips and paint some areas. But aaaa I love him, he’s so soft ;0;

I wish my roommates appreciated “rogue” taxidermy more… I got some strange looks at the suggestion of a skunk with little deer antlers. I thought it would be cute!!!

Meet “Bob”!

Bob was purchased at an antique store (as a full shoulder mount) by one of my roommates, so that he could use his antlers for his own future mount. He didn’t want the form, just the antlers and the eyes, so I figured I would strip it and keep the form as a cool antique, since even before the removal of his antlers he was not in the best shape.

It took quite a bit, and he still has a little ways to go (especially around the mouth), but I’m so excited to be adding him to my collection. Can y’all believe he was mounted in ‘71?? Crazy.

From a t.urkey that another classmate is working on. Never really thought about their wingspans before… I’m shook
