Dryden, the little buck I found across the road a few years ago.

I haven’t worked hides most of this year due to lack of mental/emotional capacity, but am finally feeling up to it.

Which means in the last two weeks I’ve picked up Nearly every roadkill I’ve seen. Four possum, four squirrels, one rabbit. All skinned out, scraped, and dried or already softened.

Sticking to little critters for now because they’re so much less commitment. My neurodivergence is not friendly to long complex processes with specific timing requirements. So little hides are just right for now.

a hand gently holding an adorable possum hind foot, that has four clawed toes and one unclawed, very roundy adorable thumb-toe
a possum fur stretched out on a frame. the fur is black and silvery grey with a white undercoat, and look very soft
the flesh side of a squirrel skin stretched and tacked onto a wooden board to dry
a roadkill squirrel carcass floating in a rich broth with chunks of vegetables inside a slow cooker
a squirrel stomach stuffed with wool to keep its shape as it dries. the stomach is small - about as long as my pointer finger, but curved around on itself. it's narrow at one end and wider at the end.
a grey squirrel fur laid on a wooden table. it's grey with bits of brown along the spine, has cinnamon brown stripes down the side of its belly, and white edges.
two squirrel skins tacked to a wooden board to dry, flesh side out .
three dead roadkill creatures laid side by side on a wooden deck. on the left a silvery black possum, in the middle a cottontail rabbit, and on the right a grey squirrel.
four possum furs laid in a row on a table. they have mostly black fur along their spines, with silvering towards white at their stomachs. the fur is long and looks very luxurious.

Last weekend my family hit a hare on the road when it got dark, the poor thing went straight through the headlight and got stuck.

I took it home with me and cleaned it up a bit. I envisioned an umbilical cord attached to nature’s womb.

So it’s every American vulture’s worst nightmare to find one of your favorite native birds as roadkill

I collected it anyways and (after a day or two of extended googling and awkward hemming and hawing) I emailed a guy at the science museum about accepting it as a donation.

So this morning I waited around in the science museum lobby holding a dead bird in a plastic bag while children and parents were milling around, trying to spot this guy who I only knew by name…

And then this older guy approaches and mutters under his breath ‘wonder if there’s a bird in there…’ and then wanders off again, so I had to say ‘I do, um, have a bird in here.’ And our conversation continued in this supremely awkward fashion for a couple minutes, in which I attempted to be friendly and ask questions like what other sorts of donations he gets, and he tried the entire time to just grab it and walk away.

GOOD TIMES

in all seriousness though, RIP gorgeous egret friend. I’m glad you found your way to someone who is legally allowed to appreciate your remains, and possibly use them for science.

Dead animal warning!!!

I have the coolest friends. One of them texted me this evening to let me know of a rta fox just off the highway. It took me a good 40 minutes to figure out how to collect her safely, but I managed it :)

She’s the first Minnesotan fox I’ve ever seen. Shame she’s dead, but still very beautiful and precious. She will be buried in one of my flowerpots, alongside a toad and a raccoon from last year.

So here is my possum friend. Smaller than I expected, but still too big for me to collect right now :( the bag I got from the shop wasn’t nearly big enough to contain him and all his various fluids. But I moved him to the grass so he wouldn’t end up more mutilated. RIP.

When they say you can find anything on the internet, they’re not lying… I managed to find my most embarrassing childhood memory from 1992.

Fox Mourns The Loss Of His Friend Killed By A Passing Car.

February 3, 2015 - Island Beach State Park, NJ.

I was photographing a fox emerging from a grassy knoll on the side ofShore Road in Island Beach State Park, NJ  on February 3, 2015. After the fox I was photographing cleared through the brush he noticed another fox just down the road heading towards him. They both saw each other and began chasing each other up and down, and back and forth across the road. They were jumping on each other playing tag and rolling around. And just like that an SUV came barreling down the road, the driver slammed on their brakes and swerved but it was too late. The white SUV struck one of the foxes with the front passenger side tire of the car. I stared not knowing what to do. The fox who was hit was spasming and rolling around on the ground. The spooked fox who nearly avoiding being hit saw his friend on the ground. He thought he was fine, just playing like they were moments before; so he ran over and pounced. They were both rolling around until the fox who was hit stopped moving. This is when I decided to walk over and see what was going on. As I got closer I saw the both foxes covered in blood. The fox who avoided the accident kept circling around his playmate just staring confused; he looked so sad. He continued nuzzling his friend to see if he was ok and picked him up by his neck (like a mother does to her young) and set him down. Nothing. After a few try’s he noticed the blood on his coat and wasn’t too happy. He ran into the brush and started rolling around on the ground and brushing against a tree trying to get his friends blood off his fur. He came back out after a couple moments and started to circle again. He tried pawing and nosing a couple more times, still nothing. He walked off the road slowly, he stopped to look back for a moment then ran off into the the grassy knoll. The driver never stopped.
