It was a few days after you had let Davash read your palm for the second time. Unfortunately, the last time you’ve visited him, you ran out of time for picking up coffee. That was why you were invited once more from him to go to a cafe nearby his place. You were very much hoping this was a date.

The hot weather was finally cooling down and you sighed blissfully at the faint wind that breathed at you. The sky was littered in heavy, clear white clouds and the sign on Davash’s shop seemed to be illuminated by the sun.

Opening the door to the shop, the charms jingled above your head and echoed through the empty room.

“Davash?” you called out.

There was a pause before there was an answer, “I’m upstairs.”

You walked through the shop and found the stairs. As you were about to climb up with reluctance, Davash suddenly appeared and jumped down right in front of you. Your eyes widened when his lean, muscular, and bare chest came right in front of your face. His shirt was nowhere in sight and the muscles on his upper body rippled as he moved.

Speechless, you swiftly averted your eyes once you realized you were staring at him.

“Sorry,” he said embarrassedly. “I was changing into something more suitable for our date—”

“It’s a date?”

“I, um… I was hoping it was,” he said rather timidly, scratching his neck nervously.

Smiling giddily, you chuckled. “I was also hoping it was.”

He sighed in content. “Great! Let’s—oh wait. I have to go get a shirt.”

You laughed good-naturedly and Davash’s flustered state became worse than before.

He flashed you a bashful look before hurrying up the stairs, skipping two or three at a time and occasionally stumbling over the edges. When he came back, he was wearing jeans and white shirt with a few buttons on the top unbuttoned.

Before you could say anything, he once more dashed towards somewhere off, presuming the kitchen. You contained a smile from breaking out when his foot almost caught on a floor board and almost tripped and clumsily halted in front of you.

He cleared his throat. “I don’t have the best first-appearance, do I?”

“I thought it was cute,” you said.

He coughed, surprised and cleared his throat again. “Shall we get going?”

“Of course.” You took his hand into yours and you smiled brightly up at him. “Let’s go.”

———

Upon arriving the cafe, you settled on a seat near the window and basked in the sunlight. Davash especially seemed to enjoy the sun because a purr escaped from his chest like a cat rolling on a warm cushion.

A waiter immediately appeared and took out a notepad and a pen. “The usual, sir?”

“Yes please.” Davash turned to you expectantly. “How about you?”

“Uh…” Your finger traced on the menu before ordering a coffee and a pastry.

As you two patiently waited for your orders to come, Davash pulled something out of his jean pocket. It was a deck of cards, but not the conventional ones with hearts and spades, but the one with beautiful illustration used for card readings. His soft paws started to shuffle the cards.

“I’ve brought this for fun,” he said.

“What are you going to do with it?” you asked. Tilting your head to the side, you watched him glide the cards through his paws, mesmerised.

“A magic trick.”

“You’re a fortune teller and a magician?”

“I’m very aware of my talents.” His teeth flashed to you cheekily and you grinned back.

“I’m very honoured to be in your presence, Davash,” you said playfully.

A deep resonant purr erupted from his chest and he laid the cards on the table into a fan. “Please pick a card of your interest.”

You leaned on the table and your hand hovered over the cards before tugging one on the second card from the right. Glancing at the illustration, it said, The Sun, with a drawing of a bright sun shining on a sunflower field. “This one.”

Davash remained impassive, yet from the small twitch of his ears, you knew that he was excited. Cards flying, he shuffled it gracefully and once more spread it into a fan. One card in the middle stuck out and he gently nudged it to you.

“Pick the middle one.”

You slowly pulled it from the others and turned it around.

“Is that your card?”

Your eyes widened. It was your card.

“I’m impressed,” you remarked, looking at him over the card.

“Thank you,” he purred pleasantly. He took the card from you and inspected it. Hummed thoughtfully, he cleaned the deck away just as the waiter came back with your orders.

Thanking the waiter, you took the coffee mug and brought it to your lips, sipping the black, bitter liquid. “This is a really nice coffee,” you said.

“Great. This is my favourite cafe.”

Drinking the coffee, you commented, “I should come here more often.”

“So there’s a higher chance of meeting me?”

Looking up, you tilted your head at the amusement swirling in his eyes. “Perhaps. It doesn’t hurt meeting you more often as well. But mostly for the coffee.” You took a bite from your pastry and smiled. “And for the food.”

“Can’t blame you for that.”

Your eyes trailed off to his pie and watched him silently cut it, revealing a vibrant colour red cranberry jam.

“You have a thing for cranberries.”

He beamed. “My parents had a garden full of cranberries and I used to eat it all the time.”

“That’s really nice.”

Noticing his chin covered in pie crumbs and cranberry jam, you leaned towards him. “You got something on your chin.”

“Where?” Davash tried to wipe it off by licking it with his rough tongue but failed miserably.

Laughing, your fingertips hovered over the fur. “May I?”

Davash nodded shyly.

Bringing a napkin to his chin, you wiped off the red stain and crumbs away tenderly. Your knuckles occasionally caressed his cheeks and you bit the inside of your cheeks from smiling at the softness of his fur.

“There.”

“Thank you.”

You finished your pastry and coffee as soon as Davash finished his own. As you were about to take the receipt, the rakshasa softly nudged your hand away and took the piece of paper instead.

“But—”

“I invited you here,” he said, smiling. “This is the least I could do for you.”

You were about to protest again but thought better of it when you saw the look on his face.

Sighing in defeat, you playfully glared at him. “All right.”

Soon after he paid for the drinks and food, you both were outside in the sunlight and Davash purred again in delight.

“I love summer days,” he said, stretching his arms over the head. “Although I also love the nights.”

“Why is that?”

“I love stargazing in the summer night. I used to do it a lot when I was a child back at home in the countryside.”

You hummed thoughtfully, lips pursing. “Can I ask you something?”

“Yes?” He looked at you, hovering over you as always.

“The card you used for your magic trick,” you started, “it was a reading card, right?”

“Yes. Oh.” A pleased look passed over his face. “You want to know the meaning behind it.”

You blushed. “Can you blame me for that?”

“Not at all.” He pulled out the said card from his shirt pocket. “This card is called The Sun. It represents joy and fortune, and the universe coming together to aid your path. But in a love reading, it represents that the joy in your love life is in its horizon.”

“Well, there is no denying that,” you said. Looking up, you stood on your tip toes and placed a small kiss on his cheek. “I am very happy being with you.”

Davash’s ears stiffened before fluttering down. “Me too.”

He leaned down towards you and licked your cheek in return. His rough tongue sent a pleasant sensation and a small shiver went down your body.

“Thank you for today,” you said.

“My pleasure, love.”

Sweat trailed down from your forehead to your neck and stayed there like an annoying pest. Unlike the past visits to the park, the day was hot—the hottest temperature in the season. It was hot enough for pieces of strands of hair to stick on your skin and refuse to hang off every time you try to brush it off. And it was spring morning; you shivered despite the temperature when you imagine what would happen in the summer. Yet there was nothing stopping you from meeting your mer friend living in the pond.

Watching your footsteps, you dodged brambles and long branches as you called out, “Ryo?”

SPLOSH!

“Yeah?”

Your heart violently hammered once against your ribs and you clutched on it as if to hold it in place. “Oh gosh, you scared me Ryo.”

He was smiling sheepishly; his chest leaning against a rock, arms crossed in front of him, and his glamorous tail stretched up above the water, basking in the sunlight. “Sorry,” he said, “I didn’t mean to scare you.” He looked down sadly. “Though it’s quite impossible with how I look, right?”

Shoulders dropping, your hands lowered and hanged to the side lifelessly at the heartbreaking sight in front of you. Walking towards him, you kneeled in front of him and cradled one hand on his cheek while you placed the other on his chest. “I think you’re perfect,” you said earnestly, smiling at him comfortingly. “You’re the most beautiful person. Inside and out.”

Beneath your palm, you could feel the gentle thud of his heartbeat getting faster and stronger. He sniffled, rather adorably, and you could see prickles of tears in his eyes.

“Thank you.”

You kissed his forehead gingerly and playfully bumped his nose with your finger. The gesture earned a smile from the mer and you beamed as well. “Do you still want to listen to the rest of the story?”

Ryo nodded eagerly. “Of course.”

Pulling out the book, you took out the napkin bookmark from last time and started reading. Every once in a while, sweat trickled down your face and every time it did, Ryo brushed his soothingly cool hands and wiped them away from your skin. You blushed every time he did and your stomach seemed to lurch, pleasantly, and your heart stopped for a moment then beat harder than before. Yet you smiled and leaned towards the cold sensation of his touch. As you dabbed the sweat under your chin, he tapped your arm. Facing him, you saw his nervous face starting to heat up.

“W-would you perhaps want to put your legs in the water?” he suggested. “It would help you with the hot weather.”

“Are you sure you want my feet in the pond?”

He looked down embarrassedly. “I thought it would help you.”

You squeezed his arm gratefully. “Thank you. I would do anything to stop sweating like a flooding dam.” Taking off your shoes, you dipped your feet inside the water and sighed in content as the cold started to spread through your body. “This feels really good.” You placed a chaste kiss on his cheek. “Thank you.”

Awe-struck, he blinked a few times and snapped himself out a few moments later. “It was just a suggestion.”

“A really good one.” Beaming, you took out the napkin from the pages and opened to read, but he interrupted you before you could start reading the words.

“I have something for you,” he blurted out, looking eagerly excited.

You raised a brow, surprised at the sudden announcement. “Really?”

He blushed fiercely, the cheeks turning to a lovely shade of red, matching the scales on his tail. “It’s nothing big,” he said bashfully. “I’ll quickly go get it.”

He dove into the water and you kneeled on the rock to watch him swim ever-so-graciously through the shallow pond. You admired the flecks of glimmering scales of red and white of his tail as they glided and moved like a fluttering piece of silk against the wind. When he came back with his messy hair popping out of the surface, he had a big grin on his face as he hid something behind his back.

“What do you have behind your back?” You smiled at the childish excitement emitting from him

Ryo slowly brought his hand to you and unfolded his fingers from the object—it revealed a beautiful lily petal, with glowing streaks of blue flowing through the pattern engraved on the white surface. Hands hovering over the petal, you stared at it in amazement as you watched the glowing blue light from it.

“It’s a bookmark,” he said shyly. “Since you couldn’t find yours the last time, I thought I would make one for you.”

“It’s really beautiful,” you murmured, looking up at Ryo to focus on his black eyes. He slowly passed it to you and you took it with gentle hands. “Thank you, Ryo. I love it.”

“It’s really nothing special.” He shook his head. As he was about to retract his hand from you, you quickly took it into yours and pressed your lips on the back of it lovingly.

“It’svery sweet,” you objected, “and very thoughtful of you.”

He looked down, his cheeks splattered with pink blush, but smiled widely. “I’m glad you like it.”

Observing your new bookmark one last time, you carefully tucked it in between the padres you have left and faced him curiously. “I hope it wasn’t anything difficult making this for me.”

“It was nothing. Besides, I would do anything for you if you ask me to.”

Eyes wide, the smile on your lips ceased sombre and everything went black as you watched him shuffle nervously, his tail flickering and jerking every time he tried to find a new position. “You… you, y-you would really mean that?”

“I-I, um, I—of course, I’ll do anything for you, because you deserve anything you want in the world.”

Cocking your head to the side, you bit your lip, trying hard to contain a grin. “That’s a very cliché line,” you remarked. “Where did you get it from?”

Ryo chuckled nervously. “I got it from my father, from when he confessed his feelings to my mother.” Then he drew back, gasping, once he realized what he just said. “I don’t mean it that way. I mean you’re a p-perfect being in this world but—”

“I like you.” Simple as that, that stopped his stutters-filled ramblings and looked at you blankly. “I really like you.” You softly caressed his pale cheeks and searched for a reaction from him. Brows furrowing, you were about to take away from your hands when he laid his own on top of yours.

“I l-like you too,” he said, leaning his forehead against yours. “I reallydo.”

Beaming, you pulled his head towards you and kissed him tenderly. You laughed softly when a splash of water sprayed on you when his tail fin excitedly flapped against the pond’s surface.

“Sorry,” he apologized embarrassedly.

Capturing his lips again one last time, you pulled back and smiled at him. “You’re adorable,” you only said. Then you pecked his nose affectionately. “And sweet.”

Ryo smiled endearingly, wrapped his arms around your torso, resting his head on your chest, and let out a sigh. His arms tugged around your form and you propped your chin on his head. A breath escaped from you as well when his cool skin touched against yours, calming you instantly.

“And you’re perfect,” he said.

Meeting his eyes, you smiled. “So are you.”

Hot summer days were something you absolutely loved… and hated. The pleasant beams of sunlight and the swaying lush green leaves of the tree—something always you looked forward to in the morning when you wake up and open the curtains. Then there was the scorching type of summer; the type that burned your skin and the unbelievably hot air that causes sweat to glimmer against your forehead. It was all a balanced, love and hate harmony throughout the year but right now, you absolutely loathe it with the temperature seeming to rise hotter and hotter.

What you needed right now was a shelter—a place that was surrounded in cold air and cool you down in the shadows. In an instant, you took a turn, you were met by a sign written in jazzy, fancy font that said, “DAVASH’S FORTUNE TELLING.”

Tilting your head, you eyed inside the shop and sighed dreamily as you saw the place covered in comfortable-looking purple-based colours of rugs and cushions that seemed to drop the temperature within the space. You also see unfamiliar charms and other fortune telling-y things decorated inside that sparked your interest.

In the flurry of your staring, you didn’t see a tall, big figure inside that perked up as if feeling your gaze. They knocked on the window softly and brought your attention to the person—a rakshasa. He, you think, opened the window of the shop and gestured you towards him. Flushed, you didn’t have the courage to say anything else and hesitantly walked over to him.

He was a tall raksha with beautiful tiger fur of flaring orange and jet-black stripes that were engraved on his body. He wore a baggy T-shirt and green pants that fit him perfectly on his body. You also noticed two golden loops pierced on his right ear. When you halted just in front of him, he flashed you a smile, or something similar, with the edges of his mouth creasing and the eyes twinkling like two shining jewels.

“Hey,” he greeted, his rumbling, almost purr-like voice almost caught you off guard. “I see you are quite uncomfortable out there in the sun.” He gestured to the said bright ball of light above, and you smiled bashfully.

You fidgeted with the creases of your clothes. “Quite frankly,” you admitted, nodding.

“How about you come inside, then? It’s very cool here—perhaps you can cool down here for a bit.” He added quickly, “Of course if you would like to.”

Lips pursed, you were silent for a moment and looked through the window to gaze blankly at the exotic patterns of the rugs. Then you faced him, rolled your lip, and smiled. “I would love to.”

His sharp teeth flashed against the sun and you couldn’t help but find it rather cute that he quickly looked away from you once he realized that he was staring at you, unblinking. Pushing open the door, you entered the shop, a relieved smile gracing your face once the cool air started to envelope you in cocoon in a cooling bliss, instantly melting any trace of heat from you.

“This place… it’s very lovely,” you said, looking around, intrigued.

“Thank you.” Then he suddenly widened his eyes. “Gods, sorry for not telling you my name. I’m Davash.” He extended his big, fluffy paw towards you and you took it without hesitation.

“Nice to meet you, Davash.” Telling him your name, you slightly tilted your head to the side at the rough yet soft feeling of his paw.

“First time meeting a rakshasa, I presume?”

Cheeks flushing, you immediately looked away in embarrassment and retracted your hands from his gentle grip. Clearing your throat, you replied, “I hope you haven’t found me rude just in the past five minutes of meeting you.”

Davash purred in amusement and shook his head, the orange ears adorably fluttering at the action. “No, of course not.”

“So, you’re a fortune teller?”

“What gives?”

You shrugged your shoulders. “The sign is pretty flashy, don’t you agree?” At his burst of amused laughter, you grinned. “I’ve never actually talked to a fortune teller before, getting a reading nevertheless,” you said, looking at the glittering charms of gold and silver curiously.

“Not many do,” Davash remarked thoughtfully. Then his eyes shone with slight mischief. “Would you perhaps one?”

Being off guard, you blinked a few times in shock, trying to register a logically easy offer in your head. “Me?” You pointed at yourself unintelligently.

He chuckled. “Yes. Free of charge, on the house.”

“Oh you possibly can’t—”

He cut you off, “I insist.”

Narrowing your eyes, you watched him questioningly. “What’s the catch?”

Davash leaned towards you playfully and slit his eyes as well. “How about a small favour from me?”

Swallowing nervously, you managed a smile. “What kind of favour?”

“If I tell you now, it won’t be a surprise nor would it be fun, would it?” He winked. “But know this: you can trust me.”

You bit your lips, the corner of it quirking upwards. “Then I would love a reading.”

He rushed you to the main room, entering through a door with elaborate carvings, and he guided you to sit on the floor filled with cushions, seeming incredibly cozy and comfortable. When you looked around, you noticed that Davash vanished behind the door and you heard the unmistakable sound of excited footsteps climbing up the stairs. You were fixing invisible wrinkles on your shirt when the rakshasa returned with two glasses of cold beverage, the colour of ruby red that reflected on the table through the sunlight.

“Here. Thought you would like it.”

“Thanks.” You took it gratefully and examined it curiously. “What exactly is it?”

“Cranberry juice,” he answered, drinking a big swig of it. “My mother’s recipe. Don’t worry, there’s no blood in it.” He winked.

Raising a brow, you took a sip from the cold beverage and heaved a happy sigh. “This is very good.”

“I’ll tell that to my mom,” he said, watching you take another sip from the glass. Setting the cup down, you looked up at Davash who still towered over you.

“You’re still sceptical of me, aren’t you?” He raised a brow, giving you a fake offended look.

Cheeks heating up, you smiled sheepishly. “Can you blame me?”

Davash shook his head. “It’s completely understandable.” He then extended his paw to you, gesturing for your palm.

Complying, you placed your hand on him, the back of it comfortably nesting on his rough pad. His claws started to gently skim over your wrinkles and flesh of your palm, and you shivered involuntarily from his touch.

“I can see that you’re a strong individual,” he murmured. His eyes were half-lidded and his voice slurred slightly, the sound drooping lazily around your ears. Then he traced the middle of your palm, where you felt a slight itch on the skin. Biting the inside of your cheek, you prevented yourself from scratching the spot in front of him. “Do you feel an itch here?”

Your eyes widened at the question. “Um… yes.”

He looked up, giving you an unreadable look. “For how long? Did it happen before?”

“No, it just happened now.”

He nodded thoughtfully, his ears twitching occasionally as he did and you had a strong urge to scratch the space between them. Your heart almost stopped from shock when he suddenly shook his head vigorously and switched his attention to you. “The fate line tells me that you’ll face a great change in your life very soon.”

“What kind of change?”

“I can’t really tell.” His lips pursed. “But I think that it’s a change in your… love life.”

There was a small pause where you just sat there completely stunned. “My love life…”

“Had difficulty in the past?” he asked, looking at you intently.

“Not really,” you said, propping your unoccupied arm in front of you and rested your chin on it. “I didn’t think there would be anything about my love life.”

“Well there’s a lot more I could tell you, but let’s call it a day.”

Brows furrowing, you tilted your head to the side, perplexed. “You’re not going to finish this?”

“Because that’s the catch,” he said, amusement sparkling in his eyes. “The catch is you would visit me here again to finish your reading and perhaps get a coffee with me after that.”

“Oh.” Lips parting, you stared at Davash blankly while your mind was buzzing with millions of snaps of scenarios.

“Of… Of course if you wouldn’t mind that,” he added swiftly, his voice pitching higher in alarm. Then he groaned and ran his hand over his face and mumbled, “I should’ve known.”

“Wait!” Clearing your throat, you smiled at the astonished look on his face. “I would love that. I like that catch.”

He perked up. “Really?”

You nodded.

“Gods, thank you!”

Chuckling, you took another sip from the red cold drink. “You’re awfully nice to me; I have to repay you someday.”

“You don’t have to,” he said, smiling. “You already have.”

The sound of the water rippling repeatedly cut through the calm silence, caused by the koi fish swimming leisurely through the serene pond. Currently, you were lying against a tree with your eyes shut, the sound of people in the distance muffled by the wall of branches and grasses. This patch of nature was one of the biggest parks you ever know and it’s filled with many beautiful places—like the pond in front of you.

It was a rather big pond in the middle of the park, connected to a streaming river, and colours of white, orange, red, golden, and black all painted through the transparent water. There was a small bridge between the entrance of the river and the circular pool that casted a shadow over the surface. And the best part is that the place was secluded by other pedestrians.

This was your favourite place to be when you wanted to be left alone and just lie on the soft grass. You don’t have to worry about being lost or being too lonely since the main part of the park was a safe distance away and snaps of voices drifted to the place.

Smiling peacefully, you sighed happily as sleep started to take over you.

Splosh.

You cracked open an eye towards the water and your forehead crinkled. The sound was rather loud but you shrugged it off as some of the hungry koi. You once more laid your head against the bark as your breathing started to become shallower.

SPLOSH!

Swiftly as thunderbolt, you looked at the pond to see that the koi fish were all positioned at the corner. Narrowing your eyes, you creeped slowly towards the water with all your fours, ignoring the cold dirt seeping through your palm and your knees. Tentatively, you peeked over at the pristine water and scanned through with suspicion. When you found nothing, you were about to shrug it off when your gaze landed on the bridge. Tilting your head, you walked near the stoned structure and stuck your head under.

Big ripples skimmed across the water—then you saw it. A tail almost as long as your entire height and thick as the length of your arm, littering with splats of beautiful red and oranges over a white canvas, and an upper body of a human with pale skin smoothly joined on it. You looked up above the next and gasped when you saw a handsome face staring right at you with his pale cheeks flushed to almost the same colour as his red scales.

“I…” he uttered quietly, frozen in place in panic.

With  your lips quivering anxiously, you leaned towards him with wide eyes. “W-What—Whoareyou?”

“I’m R-Ryo,” he said, his voice almost inaudible. His hands clutched at the edges of the stones on the bridge as he pressed his back against it.

Quite reluctantly, you said your own name, trying for a small, friendly smile. “Nice to meet you,” you said awkwardly.

His body hesitantly swam towards you, his beautiful colours of his scales flickering graciously and sparkled as he came into the light. You couldn’t help but admire his lean form and saw the other details on his body; there was a thin and delicate fin lined up from the very end of his tail to the middle of his spine, the bits of red scales littered on his skin, and his adorable cheeks that are slightly puffed up. He easily towered over you and you almost had to look directly at the sky to meet his gaze. It was amazing to watch such a enormous form moving in a shallow and small pond without any trouble or discomfort.

“You’re amazing,” you couldn’t help but say.

Ryo’s face heated to an endearing colour of pink, but the corners of his lips turned into a bashful smile. “Th-Thank you.”

Tilting your head, your brows furrowed in puzzlement. “Why haven’t I noticed you before?”

“I tried to hide away from you,” he said. “You’re such a beautiful human and I-I was afraid that you would be disgusted by a creature like me.”

“Oh…” You looked away, feeling your neck crawl with an intense heat of embarrassment, yet you looked up to him with a comforting smile. “You’re also beautiful, you know?”

You widened your eyes when he suddenly dove into the water, somehow completely submerging himself before springing up into the air again. Jumping back, you watched as his mouth opened and closed repeatedly just like the koi fish around him.

His face ever so slowly swayed towards you, his eyes shining gorgeously. “I-I—you… y-you really think so?”

Nodding, you brought your fingertips to his face, and skimmed gently over the soft pale skin. You felt him shiver under your touch, and through his chest emerged a light chuckle and duck away as if it tickled.

“You’re very beautiful, Ryo.”

He blushed madly, but grinned ear-to-ear like a child that was so adorable.

“So,” you said, “what do you do around here?”

“I swim at the larger lake just a few distance away from here,” he said, gesturing beyond the river. “And sometimes I…” –he looked away embarrassedly– “I listen to you read to yourself.”

Oh.

Shocked, you stayed silent for a while with your eyes wide and lips parted. Blinking a few times, you got yourself out of the daze and smiled at him. “Maybe I could read something for you the next time I meet you?”

“T-The next time?”

You tilted your head and furrowed your brows. “We’re not going to meet again?”

“Of course!” he said in a rush. His tail flapped against the surface of the pond and the water sprayed on you. “Sorry!”

Laughing in amusement, you shook your head and cracked open your eyes. “Don’t worry,” you said, brushing off the specs of water on your clothing.

His entire face beamed in excitement as he asked, “When can I meet you again?”

Pursing your lips, you looked at him sheepishly. “I actually don’t know.”

“Well if you come here the next time, just call my name.” He traced patterns on the rock you were crouching on. “I’ll come here really quickly.”

You nodded. “Got it.”

“But for now, I-I think you should go now.” He gestured up at the horizon, the sun sinking slowly to the ground. “It will be dark soon.”

“Right,” you said, standing up. You stumbled on your steps when the spark of numbness spread through your legs abruptly. Dusting off invisible dirt to hide your embarrassment, then smiled down at Ryo who was watching you with unreadable eyes.

“I’ll see you again, okay?”

He somehow rose to his full height graciously, reaching just below your shoulder. His long tail adored with scales dazzled against the blazing sunlight, almost blinding you with its shine. It once more amazed you how big and powerful, yet so elegant and mythical he was.

“I’ll be waiting,” he promised.

Without a thought, you leaned down to him and pressed a chaste kiss on his cool and wet cheek, lips stretched shyly against his skin. Ryo just stayed there frozen in place, staring blankly at the place just behind you. You licked your upper lip nervously and duck away in shyness.

“Sorry,” you mumbled. “Have a nice evening.”

“You too.”

His voice was soft and faintly echoed through the gentle wind. Perhaps you imagined it, but you heard a small awe in his words that sent a warm wave in your heart.

After the week-long journey of riding your horse and wearing comfortable clothes, it was slightly weird to wear your formal garment. Nevertheless, it was common royal rules to wear something ‘suitable’ when meeting with other royalties. At least your outfit didn’t constrict your lungs from breathing and fitted pleasantly on your body without any discomfort. Yet the absence of the familiar weight of your sword was enough to make your stomach clench in nervousness.

Inhaling and exhaling slowly, you open the large wooden door of the guest room and exit without a sound. True to Karguk’s word, one of the guards was standing there and  escorted you to the dining hall. Once you reached, he bowed at you and walked away and you were left alone with the warriors and the royal family of Slainem. The place was filled with long tables lined up vertically from the entrance and the furthest back was a single wooden table and chairs placed.

Loud laughter and conversations filled the hall and it was enough to accelerate your heart. When your gaze landed on the royal table, the siblings were the only one present and you instantly relaxed at their comfortable banter. Mogak, noticing you, grinned and waved you over and patted the seat next to her, indicating to sit beside her—across from Karguk. She had a mischief glinting in her eyes, and you knew that for the few days you’re going to stay, the teenage orc was going to scheme you together with her older brother.

“Come sit with us,” she shouted over the noise.

You could see her trying to hide a smirk. Raising a brow, you smiled and strolled to the seat. In the short time, you felt so small and insignificant walking between the large orcs that you wanted to shrink—you also felt Karguk’s eyes boring through your skin but you kept your calm and safely sat on the chair.

“Thank you,” you only said to her. You felt extremely small sitting in the middle of the giant orcs, and you tried your best to keep a balance of keeping your back straight and shrinking slightly so as to not draw too much attention.

Karthurg sipped a goblet of water and placed it on the table. “How do you like it here?” he asked.

“It’s very nice,” you answered truthfully.

He nodded and smiled. “That’s good to hear. And if you need anything, I’m sure Karguk would be delighted to help you.”

You narrowed your eyes slightly at the sight of the same glint he held as her sister. “Right.” Turning towards Karguk, you see his cheeks in the colour of moss in the deepest part of the shadow; now recognizing them as equivalent to a blush.

Karthurg jabbed him harshly, and Karguk growled furiously in response, causing the eldest to laugh good-naturedly while the younger to grumble something under his breath.

“Now what do you say, Karguk?” chided Karthurg.

Karguk momentarily glared before he straightened up abruptly at your heavy gaze and cleared his throat, failing to hide his embarrassment. “Of course. I’ll be happy to help.”

Mogak snickered quietly and hid it behind her goblet.

Ignoring her clear amusement, you beamed at him appreciatively. “Thank you.”

His shoulders sagged and smiled happily back at you.

The decrease in sound and pairs of footsteps caught all of your attention; looking up at the entrance, King Krouthu and Queen Mazoga walked out majestically. The jewels sewn on the fabric of their outfit sparkled against the bright firelight around the hall. All the warriors stood up and bowed the entire time at the king and queen as they walked leisurely to their table. Following their lead, Karthurg, Karguk, and Mogak stood up as well and you imitated them.

Once they arrived, all the warriors sat on their chairs and the hall started to fill in with loud noises again. King Krouthu asked a question about his sons’ training and studies and started a conversation. There was a big contrast between back at your home and here at Slainem, your thoughts were occupied until Mogak talked to you.

“Hey,” she said, “are you still there?”

You blinked a couple of times and snapped out to face her. “Yeah, I think.”

She smirked. “And can I ask what exactly were you thinking?”

Knowing what she was doing, you smiled back at her without a trace of red on your features. “I was thinking of the differences between Xaenait and here.”

Mogak’s lips turned into a disappointed frown when she didn’t find any lie beneath your words. “So you’re not thinking about my brother?”

“Why are you so determined to stick your brother and I?”

“Who said I was?” She fluttered her eyes innocently.

You hummed skeptically and looked away from her—when you did, you saw that your plate was filled with the bowl of foods that had just been served. Glancing up, you saw Karguk rather frantically eating his food, and when he met your eyes, he smiled bashfully.

“I—Are you all right with the food?”

Nodding, you smiled back at him. “Thank you.”

A deep blush appeared on his face but he succeeded in hiding it by covering it with his hands. “Don’t mention it.” He shoved in a large slice of meat, not knowing that he was trying to distract himself rather than staring at you.

You watched for a moment as his cheeks puffed up as he munched on his food and your lips started to curl without knowing it. The both of you froze when you felt the intense stares you received from beside. You met the unreadable gaze of the king and you felt yourself blush furiously from embarrassment, that you didn’t notice the fond smile graced on his face as he stared at the two of you.

“How is your father back at Xaenait?” he asked, being the merciful person he is.

“He’s fine,” you said, “though he did wish to come here himself as well.”

King Krouthu smiled sadly. “I’m sure we will get a chase of seeing one another soon.”

“I do hope so.”

“And as for the letter, I would like you to pass it to one of my children for it.”

The reason behind journeying here slipped out of your mind for the last few days and you knew the reason—blushing faintly. “Oh, yes, of course.”

He grinned, shortly glimpsing at Karguk. “Excellent.”

After that the king and queen had to depart for an urgent meeting with the council and left you four alone. While Karthurg and Mogak talked, suddenly, you felt a gentle tap on your shin that sent a small chill to your body. Cautiously, you peeked down beneath the table to see Karguk’s foot leaning towards your leg, and when you looked up, he had a small smirk curved at the end of his mouth. You raised a brow at him, which he responded by secretly gesturing at the chair you were sitting at. A ball of paper landed on your lap and you widened your eyes in surprise.

You slowly opened the paper and peeked at the messy words scribbled on it.

I would like to meet you at night in the library—Karguk.

Tilting your head to the side, you eyed him incredulously.

He shrugged his shoulders, his lips stretching something much more mischievous. But then his green skin paled, and without a moment to pass Mogak snatched the piece of paper away swiftly and took a look on it.

“Mogak,” he hissed furiously, though his cheeks started to darken.

She smirked broadly and read the words on it in silence while Karthurg watched her curiously. Then, she cackled out a good-hearted laugh that boomed across the hall even with the other loud warriors inside.

“Oh brother dear, I didn’t know you were so desperate for her attention,” she said. She handed the note to Karthurg who eagerly read as well.

Karguk’s frame fumed with both fury and distress that had him seem to smoke with black fog.

You tried to hide the urge to snicker, but remained calm, not wanting to cause any more humiliation at Karguk.

The eldest started to bark with laughter as soon as he finished. “How mundane of you. What are you going to do when you get there, brother of mine?”

Talk,” Karguk said through gritted teeth. “I was planning to take her to the library to talk. Nothing suspicious.”

His siblings feigned to be sceptical and shared a look with each other cheekily.

“You know what?” You took the last bite of your remaining food and stood up. “How about we go to the library now, Karguk?”

He sighed in relief and abruptly rose from his chair as well—happy that the events suddenly turned by your small statement. “I’ll be happy to.”

Karthurg and Mogak remained quiet from slight shock and the two of you didn’t have a hard time walking away from the dining hall. A chuckle flew out of him and you cracked a smile of your own.

“Thank you for helping me escape that humiliating moment.” He lightly bumped his arm against your shoulder.

“It was nothing difficult.” You chuckled to yourself.

He pushed open a door and escorted you inside; your eyes widened at the sight of the massive library filled with thousands of leather-bound books and a comfortable lounge placed scattered around. At your wide eyes, Karguk smiled fondly and led you wordlessly to the cushioned chair for you to sit.

“This place is amazing,” you breathed out.

“I’m glad you like it.”

Karguk sat on the chair just right next to you that his arm brushed against yours. As you stared at the flickering flame, you didn’t realize him leaning at you until his hot breath tickled the side of your cheek. Staggering, you couldn’t look away from his golden eyes that pinned you down to place.

He softly spoke your name and snapped you out of your trance. “Are you all right?” His eyes sparkled with amusement as he watched you fumble with words.

“Y-Yes,” you unconvincingly said. “Yes, I’m all right. Why wouldn’t I?”

“I don’t know.” The corner of his eyes crinkled as he smiled. “You stuttered.”

Clearing your throat, you backed away slightly. “Well, I can’t help feeling nervous when someone’s this close.”

“Is that so?”

You nodded, and your eyes started to droop like they were heavy blankets. “Not again,” you mumbled sleepily.

Karguk laughed softly and started to stroke his rough yet gentle fingers through your hair. The sound of his voice and the feeling of his fingers send another wave of exhaustion to slam on your body and you lean towards his touch.

“How about I take you to your room?”

You hummed in agreement and finally closed your eyes and crashed your head on his shoulder. “Thank you,” you managed to say.

You barely heard the sound of the shift in the cushions but almost squealed when his strong arms snaked to your back and then under your knees and hauled you up to his chest. He cradled you tenderly like a light feather and sauntered through the castle easily.

Sighing content, you breathed in his scent without fully conscious, giggling as you did. “You smell good,” you said drunkenly.

His deep chuckle rumbled through your ears and felt his chest vibrate. “And you sound like a male orc that drank fifteen goblets of mead.”

Looking up through half-lidded eyes, you asked, “Was there such an orc who actually drank that much mead?”

“My brother did,” he said humorously. “He sounded exactly like you, just… worse.”

You grinned. “I would’ve loved to see that.”

The creaking of the door opening echoed through the hall and brought your attention. He walked towards you to the bed and gently placed you on the mattress.

“Thank you.”

“No troubles.”

You adjusted yourself on the pillow and peered through the gap of the soft cushion at Karguk. “Could you… perhaps stay?” you requested hesitantly. “For a while?”

His eyes darted through the guest room and finally landed on you. Swallowing, he flashed you a smile and nodded. “Of course.”

He brought a chair next to you and perched himself awkwardly on it, looking endearing as his cheeks burned.

You smiled against the pillow. “Good night, Karguk.”

He brushed a strand of hair away, then kissed your temple tentatively. The warmth of his lips lingered on your skin for a while and the final thread for sleep was woven with the action.

“Good night, love.”
