8- Yubaba and Zeniba (Spirited Away 2001).

These sisters are really phenomenal and show a very unique interpretation of the dual nature of a witch. Miyazaki films have several witches, and unfortunately I’ve only really gotten to Kiki. Yubaba and Zeniba show completely different sides of witchcraft than a witch like Kiki, being a dual-nature version of the Crone. Yubaba is an entrepreneur and a fierce mother. Zeniba is loving, kind, and protective.

Yubaba’s bird (Yu-Bird)

Spirited Away is one of my all time favorite films, an opinion I am sure I am not alone in having.

While it wasn’t the 1st “Anime” I saw, that was Princess Mononoke when I was still quite young, It was the film that truly introduced and expanded my knowledge beyond American animated films.

Do you remember the 1s animated film that changed/expanded your perspective of the genre?
