Managed to track down a high quality photo of r/place prior to the destruction for those who want it. May it rest in internet history.
Can someone explain what this is and why everyone was obsessed with it for a few days because I kept seeing it referenced with no context
r/place was an April fool’s event put on by Reddit (first in 2017, then again this year in 2022) where a blank canvas opened up on April 1 where users could place one single pixel, once every five minutes. Pixels would overwrite anything placed in that same spot previously, with the canvas constantly changing in flux. Hundreds of communities and hundreds of thousands of people came together to build incredible pixel art, defend their little swaths of territory on the canvas from griefing, form alliances with nearby territory to protect each other’s artwork, and hide lots and lots (and I mean lots) of amogus characters.
After 3 days of war, fighting bots, twitch streamers, and griefers, this was the final canvas. On April 4th the only pixel that could be placed was white, and the canvas quickly reverted back to a blank slate, with only screenshots like this to commemorate what hundreds of thousands of people came together to create.
Here’s a (hopefully, if tumblr will play nice) even bigger one that one of my friends grabbed.
you can see a timelapse of the whole canvas here. (content warning as there’s some nudity at times) The changes in canvas size reflect the fact that new blank space was added on April 2nd and 3rd. One part of it I’d like to highlight is the minecraft loading screen seen here, which afaik was the only piece which was animated over time (other than the void moving around I guess).

Beautiful Odessa
Enjoy the beauty of Ukraine
Only in our memories some parts of Ukraine still beautiful like flower
Before the war all of us had our own plans. But now the plans of Ukrainians the same: SURVIVE! RESIST! WIN!
Hi guys. Today one incredibly fucking brainless man said Ukraine literally shouldn’t exist.
I’m Ukrainian born in Donbass and risen there, now living in another Ukrainian city even closer to the R*ssian borders. My family stood still. In the exact same houses they spent their lifes in - in Donetsk where the war is about to continue with new strength.
I’m scared of literally everything, and I can’t believe that after EIGHT YEARS of straggling for safe and sound life it gets worse. I hate it here. Not because of my motherland. But because somebody who thinks to be a mother giving birth to my country.
For someone’s sake make it fucking stop
This Ukrainian defender is a professor at the Uzhgorod National University, his name is Fedor Shandor.
He joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the russian invasion. What do you think he does?
He gives lectures to the students.
This Ukrainian 8 y.o. kid wrote his diary in russian from basements of Mariupol.
I guess “liberation” of russian-speaking people in Ukraine presupposes killing off their relatives, and pets.
The letter is called ‘Война’ that means 'War’ in English.
“My 2 dogs died, my grandma Galia died too and so did my favorite city of Mariupol.
My grandfather also died, he is lying on his back and his skin has been torn out, there is a hole in his arm.”
No child ever should have such memories.
Ever.
I want to share with you my favorite Ukrainian singers
1. ONUKA (literally: granddaughter) is a Ukrainian electro-folk band. It was created in 2013 by Ukrainian musicians Yevhen Filatov and Nata Zhyzhchenko
Some of my favorite their songs:
Svitanok(live)
2. Kazka is a Ukrainian band that performs pop with elements of electro-folk. Since its creation in 2017, vocalist Oleksandra Zaritska.
3. Max Barskih is a Ukrainian singer and songwriter.
NEBO is my favorite song, he wrote it in Ukrainian.
After russia invaded Ukraine, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, left his little son at home and defends our homeland. This is his last track dedicated to the war in Ukraine in this music video you can see real footage of the destruction of russian fascists, who came to our land to commit genocide of the Ukrainian people.
4. The Hardkiss is a Ukrainian rock band.
They participated in the Ukrainian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song “Helpless”. The band placed 2nd in the national final. The Hardkiss were formed in 2011 by wife and husband - lead singer Julia Sanina and guitarist Valeriy Bebko.
My favorite songs are:
I want to introduce you to the most courageous, strong and beautiful people
These people are defending Mariupol right now. They are located at “Azovstal”.
We pray for them every day
Before/During war
The name of the girl in the photo is Katya
She is a sniper, and only 20 y.o.. Katya’s the one of the last defenders of Mariupol at “Azovstal”.
Singing a patriotic song, written in 1929. The first lines are:
“We were born in a great hour
From the fires of war and the flames of gunshots
We were nurtured by the pain of losing Ukraine…”
Another life saved✅

Thanks to all people who spread information, donate and empathize! Thanks to you, these animals have a chance to live.
This is a roe deer that was found wounded, with a head injury and broken leg.
Our Ukrainian volunteers took her to the veterinary hospital and now she is safe.
Hi, guys!
As you may know, I am Ukrainian. I live in Kyiv. I have lived here since I was born and I love my country with my whole heart.
I see a lot of misinformation under the tag “Ukraine”. Most of it comes from American people, who try to explain the conflict in their own words. They can’t. It’s impossible to explain if you haven’t lived here. There are too many influences on this conflict. You keep looking from an american perspective, which is not crucial in understanding the conflict.
For example, have you ever had you language forbidden? Like straight up forbidden by the law? It happened to Ukrainian language a lot of times thought our history. And who did it? The Russian Empire. And it’s not the end of it. The genocides, the assimilation, the deportation. Have you even researched Ukrainian history?
You do not uplift Ukrainian voices enough. And you should if you care about what’s happening. If you don’t do it, you’re just doing a performance of your support and activism.
Lucky for you, I am a Ukrainian person! And I am DYING TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. I scored 191/200 points on my graduation exam in history, so you can suppose I know something about Ukrainian history.
If you stand for Ukraine, uplift Ukrainian voices. Educate yourself. Learn Ukrainian history. Ask Ukrainian people
