listen, can i just say something? i think diversity in a/b/o is so good. like the breaking stereotypes and all that stuff, i appreciate it so much and it’s amazing. there should definitely be more of that, but also please remember, if you’re into the traditional stuff too, it doesn’t make you a bad person! you can like whatever you like and you shouldn’t feel bad about your universe or canon, even if it seems overdone or too stereotypical. do your thing and like what you like. there’s no point in being rude to others for their personal likes and tastes. we’re all different, and that’s okay. thanks for hearing me out! ♡

Omegaverse Beta Theory

One of the things that’s always bothered me in a/b/o is betas, they’re usually made to be just normal people which is very boring and doesn’t really work from a world building pov, making them mediators but that doesn’t feel right either.

So I started thinking about what could possibly be their role and started looking into various animals, specifically lions and the division of labor they have. Women do hunting and look after cubs the most while males help out with cubs a bit but mainly serve as protectors. So there are three jobs, child care, hunting, and protecting. If you give protection to alphas and child care to omegas, that makes betas the hunters.

I think this is a really cool idea and has a lot of fun implications for world building!!!

Firstly, this flips the omega and beta roles a bit where omegas are the peacekeepers between alphas and betas, rather than the standard trope of betas mediating for alphas and omegas. Which lines up more with the dubious wolf science that inspired all this because betas would be the second in command and would often take over the role as alpha if their alpha no longer could, or even challenge for it.

(Side note: The wiki I got my info for betas in nature also mentions omegas playing a court jester role in the pack, typically being the ones to initiate play. Omegas being comic relief works well with the theory of them as peace keepers because they’re trying to relieve tension and bring the pack together. Also omega characterization outside child rearing!!!)

The betas as hunters theory also kind of explains how the trend of alphas and omegas specifically being the ones to have kids got started. When there’s not an active threat alphas get to just kind of hang around the pack, meanwhile betas are busy out hunting and bringing back food. Ruts probably evolved as a response to omegas’ heat since they’re the ones around to deal with those. Someone needed to help the omega and the betas are all busy and it’s not like the alpha has anything else going on. Alphas have the spare time to go into ruts while betas don’t. So over time alphas began to respond more and more to omegas in heat.

I think taking this angle when writing betas in a/b/o could be really fun and add some extra color to a role usually treated as neutral. I’m gonna list a few of my own theories on what beta instincts would be and how they’d manifest below but feel free to come up with your own!!!

Pregnancy Scent

Fact 92: Reminder of the differences between scents in dynamics. Pregnant people’s scent is altered slightly as they progress through their pregnancy. Some people claim this is one way to tell what dynamic the baby will be by how the scent changes. Whether or not this is true is to be debated and it’s considered a pseudoscience by most.

Fact 90: Dancing is the main courting ritual but there was a different kind of social gathering in times before: the Mating Run.

The Mating Run is a voluntary chase where the omegas prove their prowess by running from the alphas, who prove their skill by chasing them. Those who didn’t want to participate and betas, who were not allowed to join (olden times were less inclusive of the beta population in regards to romance than they are now), watched and mingled. Packs and pack members came from miles to participate in the run.

Fact 91: It was common, expected even, for participating members to wear a ribbon or garment with the colors or symbol of their pack on it. If one were to wear no associated colors then they would be declaring themselves to be a lone wolf.

Fact 91.5: This is why it’s socially distasteful if a pack member didn’t wear their color, as they would be insulting their pack in front of everyone.

An alpha making a nest for their omega; the ultimate courting gift. If the omega accepts the nest, arranging it as they see fit. Aw! It’s like the equivalent of “She said yes!!!”
