Kagami, having dated Adrien and been friends with Marinette for almost as long as she’s known either of them, is something of an authority on this matter. She may or may not be preparing the Ultimate Heartbreak Mourning Package (chocolates, ice cream, alcohol, movies in any non-romance genre, tissues enough to supply a family of five, she researched this) to give to Marinette when things inevitably go awry. She’s dreading the emotional devastation but low-key looking forward to having another point of bonding between them: being Previous Adrien Love Interests.

Can someone please rewrite Series 4 of Bramwell please? Like where Eleanor’s character isn’t destroyed by the writing? (I’m not even done Series 3 yet but I know all about the atrocities of Series 4)

Like where maybe another Lady Doc appears on the scene? Like one who changes the way she thinks about all kinds of things? Like one that wants to build her up, not tear her down? Like one that makes her challenge her ingrained, and very of-the-period homophobia?

I want to write something Berena but like if no one does this for me I might have to and I don’t want to. But I also kind of need it because I won’t be happy without a proper thing ending to this show.

Day 22: Louis Jourdan

Recently, I was listening to an old hollywood musicals cd in the car (I find classic film songs incredibly soothing in times of stress) and Gigicame on and I nearly went off the road. There’s a lesson here, folks: don’t swoon and drive. See, the thing is, I’d not - all those years ago when I got that particular album  - fallen prey to the charms of Louis Jourdan. I know, I know, it’s odd, right? He’s beautiful, swoony, has the sexiest accent, is a great actor, etc etc etc but sometimes you can go along knowing a person for ages and then suddenly BAM! they are super hot and you don’t know how you didn’t see it before. (This has happened to me a lot, you think I’d be used to it by now.)

So. Louis. Wow. He’s a swoonster alright. What magical thing is it about the french accent that makes it irresistable? (I generalise, but you know….guh). He is also one of those special people who clearlyhad a portrait in the attic, I mean he’s nearly sixty in the Columbo ep he’s in (and is great in). Mind boggling. But he’s not just a pretty (very pretty) face and swoony voice. He’s a fine, fine actor, and he turns his hand well to comedy, drama, pathos, lighthearted romance, stoical angst, and of course, singing. There’s a wonderful truthfulness to him - as well as playing the stereotypically worldy continental with ease he has a naive honesty that is incredibly charming. He can play villains, of course (that’s what continentals do in american/british films, obvs) but he is adept at sincerity too. Really, he is very lovely.

Favourite Role: Dr Nicholas Agi in The Swan [1956] which is a gem of a film, wonderfully written and cast (Grace Kelly, Alec Guinness, Jessie Royce Landis, etc etc). It’s funny and sad and rather intelligent, and it’s the film that made me fall in love with Louis.

Another Good Place to Start: Gigi[1958], because he’s soooo swoony and charming, and once you get past the squickiness of Thank Heaven for Little Girls (I swear it took me years to watch this film) and dive into the opulent Vincente Minnelli/Cecil Beaton world of the film it’s a delight. Leslie Caron is adorable as ever, and it’s glossier and less seedy than its origins, but that’s okay. Also The VIPs (1963) which is one of those looks-good-on-paper films that actually is: a sixties outing for Rattigan and Asquith, with some of my very faves in (Richard Burton, Orson Welles, Margaret Rutherford, Maggie Smith). Liz Taylor is choosing between Louis and Burton, so you get all the great voices as well as romantic angst, and comedy Orson, and just people being damn good at their acting.

So I’ve just watched the latest gravity falls episode and something caught my attention. Ford said the infinite sided dice was banned in multiple dimensions which means he had been in multiple dimensions. And he also said he had made powerful enemies. So what if all those years he had been roaming the multiverse becoming known as like a highly wanted criminal? Like imagine what might have happened throughout those thirty years! That would be the most amazing story ever! What kind of people did he get to know Or what beings might he have encountered. What kind of skills might he have learned?? What if he learned about tech that would help him with his investigations? SO MANY THINGS THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. I NEED AT LEAST TWO EPISODES SHOWING WHAT HAPPENED IN THOSE THIRTY YEARS. MAYBE THEY COULD EVEN MAKE A WHOLE NEW SERIES ABOUT IT. I MEAN THINK. IT COULD BE LIKE THE TORCHWOOD TO DOCTOR WHO OF THE GRAVITY FALLS FANDOM!!!!!! THERE WOULD BE LITERALLY INFINITE POSSIBILITIES.

LIKE IMAGINE. he would have started out naive and unfamiliar with everything. And then slowly he would have figured out how things worked. Then as time passed he could have made a living of sorts probably somewhere small at first and probably bad at it. Then he would have gotten better. And eventually his love for knowledge would have kicked back in and he would want to learn more and since he probably didn’t have what he needed to to gain said knowledge he might have resorted to diving deep into things he shouldn’t. And probably breaking laws too. Through this he might have had amazing adventures and gained enemies and so much more but even though all that might have happened let’s not forget what might have happened before that! It would have been so cool! Why can’t this all just be shown to us noooww. I am dying from how many cool stories and plot lines might have happened and what else could have been going on. WHYYYY?! IM DYING! I NEED TO KNOW!

“Fanfic authors should be versed in classic literature so they don’t get caught in a feedback loop of endlessly recycling the same self-referential tropes” no, fanfic authors should be versed in classic literature so they can steal pithy quotations for the titles of their fics.

Wait sorry is someone claiming that classic literature isn’t caught in feedback loops of endlessly recycling the same self-referential tropes? Back up I feel like we need to address that bit first.

@called-kept, I’m going to quote from our conversation about AUs and fanfic tropes yesterday:

“Something something soulmates not as destiny but as choice / I would find you and choose you in any world / on purpose on purpose on purpose I love you / in sickness and in health / in coffeeshops and in dragons’ lairs / in reverse order and in the future and the past” “we tell the same story over and over and never get bored / God makes the daisies with the eternal delight of a child / saying again! again! again!”

Look, there are only so many stories to be told. To say a story is worthless because it tells a familiar story when you break it down into essentials is to say that no story is worth telling. Deconstruction? Why tell a story in order to break that story? Find the true story in the story. There’s value in reading many repetitions, different in detail and the same in essence. It’s like printmaking: many versions of the same picture, different colors.

Ofcourse it’s good for writers to know many types of stories, to immerse themselves in other genres than the one they mostly read or write in. But to write the same story again and again is no shame.

  1. I LOVE this. The philosophy and theology of storytelling is like my favorite thing to talk about ever, and this makes me absurdly happy (and also respect fanfic a whole lot more).
  2. The reason why you couldn’t find the quote is because it’s actually from Chesterton (Orthodoxy)!
Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we. The repetition in Nature may not be a mere recurrence; it may be a theatrical ENCORE.

@hollers-and-holmes You found it too!! THANK YOU! YES! I misattributed the quote to my main man C. S. Lewis. Apologies to G. K. Chesterton; you’re very valid too.

Re: respecting fanfiction: aren’t all stories secondary creations? Are not all stories derivative of others? Is it so terrible for a story to be a tertiary creation—a story based on a story based on God’s creation?

FIND THE TRUE STORY IN THE STORY

imogen’s “you lied” is so damn heartbreaking on so many levels. laudna who showed her that people can be good and they can say what they mean. laudna who she can depend on and listen to and trust. laudna who was the only person for the longest time to prove over and over again that goodness still exists. only to break that trust in an instant.

meanwhile laudna is going “i’ll fix it. i’ll fit it.” because it’s imogen, and she would do anything for imogen, even when her killer is taking over her body. it matters more to her that it’s imogen, and she would never ever hurt her. and then she adds a cautious “we’ll fix it.” on the end like a question, instead of a promise. because for years it’s been just them against the whole world. but in one instant she wasn’t even in control for, she managed to make imogen lose faith in her.

there was just… so much love and care and devotion and protectiveness and trust in this conversation but all it took was the influence of a crystal and the voice of a killer to fray their bond.

I think Witchblr needs to understand, at the end of the day, many of us are here for fun and for our own pastimes.

This is social media, a blogging platform no less. A lot of us joined Tumblr for no bigger reason than to ramble about our shenanigans, maybe make a few connections with like minds and shared interests, and perhaps being helpful in some form along the way as a bonus.

I know I didn’t come here for academic discussions. I didn’t come here to teach. I didn’t come here for lectures. I didn’t come here for scholarly enlightenment. I’ve kind of already been there and done that, and I got about 40 grand in student loans still sitting there to show for it. There’s a good reason why I’m in no hurry to go for my doctorate anytime soon, and it’s not because of money.

At the end of the day, we’re not here to be encyclopedias. Many of us have created educational masterposts out of courtesies, but that’s not our sole purpose on here, to provide resources and play research tools. We’ve already spent years doing all the work for ourselves. We’re not getting paid to do all the work for other people.

how to stay motivated as a writer

  • Reread your old writing, especially those scenes you’re most proud of
  • Write something silly. It doesn’t need to be logical, consistent or included in your story. Write something dumb
  • Compare your old writing to your new writing. Seeing how much you’ve improved can be very motivating
  • Explore different storylines, those type of storylines that would never make it into your story, but you’d still like to play around with
  • Choose one of your least favorite scenes and rewrite it
  • Read old comments from people praising your work
  • Create a playlist that reminds you of your wip
  • Draw your ocs
  • Don’t push yourself to get back into writing the thing that made you stop writing in the first place. Write something else
  • Write what you wanna write, no matter how cliché it might be. It doesn’t matter, if you want to write it, write it
  • Take a break, focus on another hobby of yours. Consume other pieces of media, take a walk to clear your head
  • You don’t have to write in chronological order from the very beginning if it isn’t working for you! Sometimes a scene you aren’t interested in writing can become interesting after you’ve explored other scenes that is connected to that one
  • Read one star reviews of “awful” books. You’ll unlock a new sort of appreciation for your own writing
  • Create a new storyline, or a new character! Anything that helps bring something fresh into your story. Could even be a completely new wip!
  • Not writing everyday doesn’t make you a bad writer. Take a break if you feel like you need one
  • Remind yourself to have fun. Start writing and don’t focus all your attention on following “the rules.” You can get into the nitty-gritty when you’ve familiarized yourself with writing as an art. Or don’t. It’s fiction, you make your own rules
  • Go to sleep, or take a nap. Sleep deprivation and writing does not go hand in hand (trust me)
  • Listen to music that reminds you of your characters/wip
  • Remember why you started. Know that you deserve to tell the story you want to tell regardless of the skill you possess

fuck all of u bitches with bad taste welcome to night vale did not have THE MAIN CHARACTER, THE NARRATOR, say hes in gay love at first sight with another man in goddamn 2012 when the best you could get was, like, glee, for you to say its only legacy is that some ppl r being cringe abt horror. fuck you.

people’s standards have dropped so fucking low n some of u have never had that experience of listening to the pilot for the first time and hear cecil wax poetic about how handsome and mysterious carlos is and have it be completely normal and expected! do you know how unprecedented that was? do you know how healing it was to hear gay love being talked about with such candor and without shame, without restraint?

wtnv was incrediblyy ahead of the curve in a lot of ways and it continues to be almost a decade later and i REFUSE to let yall slander it like this. it isnt even a horror podcast it’s a comedy with horror elements but it was never meant to be scary. the way that wtnv also does satire so well n the scathing critiques of contemporary society (esp the surveillance state)….. just say u never understood what it was (is & continues to be) abt and go lol no need to embarrass urself

Of course Nicole would worry and fuss over Rachel. She’s all she had left. Nicole is convinced she let everyone down, including all of Purgatory. She couldn’t protect them as Sheriff, and she couldn’t protect her family.

It only makes sense that she’d go full mom over literally the last person she could have some protection over. Because that’s who Nicole is, a protector and knowing that she might’ve failed as her absolutely falling apart.

Rachel just serves as a reminder that maybe she can still be something good and do something good.

he literally did this to himself 100% of the way thru. asked bisexual question. said he was bi. waited TWO. DAYS. came out as straight and claimed he misspoke trying to.. avoid talking about his sexuality… which NOBODY asked about……. his mind intrigues and terrifies me.

What makes me almost certain he was under pressure, is the fact that he felt the need to specify that he was straight .

You know he could have just written an apology and said that he was misunderstood and didn’t mean to come out , but no, he had to add that he was straight, him who usually doesn’t care what people think about his sexuality and is more than fine with shipping, so what happened? i know he wasn’t joking two days ago, and I refuse to think he was queerbaiting us, he backtracked and it’s not difficult to imagine why he did.

So what do we do?

Ok, take a deep breath.

Take another.

Try to avoid the doom scrolling.

Because of whatever hero leaked this a few months ahead of the fact, we have some time to cause an almighty uproar right now.

1. Donate to planned parenthood. Even $5 helps.

2. Is there a protest happening near you soon? Keep and eye out and go. Be loud.

3. Do you Live in a state that is either pretty 50/50 or solidly blue? SCREAM at your politicians to begin drafting legislation to protect abortion in your state now. You can’t rely on the federal government anymore, so make sure your state has it on the books.

4. Gear up for an ugly midterm election this Fall. Build momentum, build anger. Make sure all your friends are registered to vote. Whether or not this actually goes through, we need to get as many pro-choice people into state governments as possible ASAP.

5. Just cause an unholy amount of noise online. The majority of the country supports Roe v Wade. Don’t let the justices forget that.

6. Take care of yourself. You can not change the world alone, and if you feel that hopeless sick creeping in, please step back for an hour, a day, a week. The fight will be here when you return.
