Since everyone seemed to enjoy the last two no bra hacks, here is how I add a partial lining to a knit swimsuit. ✂️ with the suit on I mark placement and how much elastic I need. Next I use the suit to knockoff a pattern. After attaching the elastic to the bottom I attach the lining at sides and top. I may yet still add thin swim cups, but I’ve run out and need to get more. Continuing in the vein of no bra underwear hacks, here is an example of how I usually add a knit lining to an existing costume; especially useful for swimsuits. When I got this top it was sheer and unsupportive, the style not really allowing for a bra without exposed straps. I added a nude spandex lining to match skintone, foam cups and additional elastic on the straps. Hand basting before stitching and using swooly nylon bobbin are key. The updated top is supportive enough to be worn on its own. #alterations #diy #sewing #arica #marajade #jabbaspalace #assassin #starwars #geekfashion #lifehacks #mpc705 (at Crowne Plaza Orlando Universal)

Elastic athletic shorts alteration for cheerleader ensemble character, Grease! Jr. (teen), Windy City Performs; costumes by Auden Granger

Due to budgeting limitations and large summer camp cast numbers, costume items were used in one production run by two youth casts (double-casting, with trade-off shows) and a second production run with two teen casts (also double-cast with trade-off shows). This meant many items had to be purchased that could fit two sets of larger bodies and then be altered for two sets of smaller bodies, or vice versa.

The teen casts performed after the youth, so the items had to be sized down and then back up.

Subsequently I purchased mostly elastic items that could be flexibly sized. Production prep time meant no ordering was possible and sizes were dependent on what was available in the span of one week. Uneven co-casting meant items could not be exact transfers between one cast and the other (for instance, the teen Sandys were not the same size and needed different sized skirts, so one skirt was worn by the Sandy in cast 1 and a Pink Lady ensemble girl in cast 2). A lot of this type of alteration was done to size items for the teens.

These shorts, which were used unaltered for the youth cast, had to be taken out for one of the teen actors (with no additional purchases possible). I ripped the side seams of the shorts and sewed in green ribbon (purchased and used for hairbows). The shorts are stretchy but the ribbon is not, so I added stretch by using elastic thread and leaving slack in the ribbon. The “racing stripe” matched the complementary color that appeared in the other cheerleader costumes.

“Opposite” alterations were done on pieces for the youth cast, with stitching that was later ripped out to make the pieces larger again.

These shorts (purchased according to limited available sizing) were taken in a full five inches along the waist by adding a “pleat.” These stitches were later ripped to bring the shorts back out.

hey psa to my fellow fat ppl: a few tips + tutorials for upsizing clothing that’s too small, that way if you’ve grown out of certain stuff and can’t afford new things, you can make it fit you– this has helped me a lot in the past

my tips:

  • cutting off just the neckline of a shirt/dress can help SO much
  • cutting slits on the sides of tight shirts helps relieve tightness + you can add an accent fabric, lace, or fishnet material under there for an extra design element (or safety pin it back together for a really cool punk look!)
  • you can do that same thing with sleeves but i recommend doing it underneath (either on the seem if it has one or to the seem that connects it to the shirt)
  • adding false pleats to skirts/dresses by cutting them up the sides and in the front and adding an accent fabric works really well with tightness around the legs
  •  you can do a lot of these side-cut things to pants but if you do, it’s a good idea to add elastic to the waist band!
