I adore this series. When the first book (Illuminae) started appearing on Instagram, I wasn’t at all convinced this would be something for me. It’s build from chats, analysed video, dossiers, message boards and Aidan’s insane but entertaining ramblings. It’s not a format I enjoy reading, it often pulls me out of the story. With the Illuminae Files (the entire series) it doesn’t bother me a bit.…
Aurora Rising, by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Rating: 5/5
Holy….wow. I’m not usually into sci fi. I read it a lot as a kid and ended up tiring myself out and not wanting to read the genre much more. But then I read illuminae and was sucked back in.
And then Aurora Rising came into my life. And holy moly, I would read this a million times over and would still want to read it again. Amie…
1.The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson : 3/5 A bit of a change from the mistborn trilogy but very enjoyable.
2.Shadows of Self, Brandon Sanderson : 3.5/5 Another solid installment, enjoyed this more and more as I got to know the characters.
3.The Bands of Mourning, Brandon Sanderson : 4/5 loved this, taking the characters out of Elendel really worked for me. Can’t wait for The Lost Metal.
4.Illuminae, Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman: 3/5 Really enjoyable, the format was a bit jarring to begin with but I quickly got used to this.
5.The Emperor’s Soul, Brandon Sanderson : 4/5 Loved this read just wasn’t long enough for me.
6.Gemina, Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman : 4/5 Fabulous, more engaging than the first installment. Brilliant narrative, nice little world-building tidbits, great characters.
7.Obsidio, Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman: 5/5 One of the best conclusions to a trilogy I have read in a while. I’m not often floored by a plot twist but these guys completely surprised me.
8.Sixth of Dusk, Brandon Sanderson : 2.5/5 it was okay, not Sanderson’s best short but I appreciated its place in the Cosmere.
9.Shadows for Silence in the Forest of Hell, Brandon Sanderson : 4/5 Exciting and intriguing short. Hope Sandi writes more in this world.
10.Prince of Fools, Mark Lawrence : 3/5 took some time to get into but enjoyable. A nice fantasy with dastardly characters.
11. The Rose and The Dagger, Renee Ahdieh : Did Not Finish. Didn’t like it so i put it down.
Best Read of April : Obsidio :)
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars
Here’s the thing about These Broken Stars, it’s a very subtle science fiction book. Despite starting out on a space cruise liner it is much more of a survival story and half the time you forget that they’re on an alien planet. The alieness of the book is very subtle, small hints being placed throughout the book, but never explicit. You don’t have strange monsters jumping out or a sense that the world our characters are trapped upon has a sense of otherness. This is a survival story more than anything and as such you don’t see the futuristic world it’s set in much. Other than the initial scenes on the space cruise liner prior to crashing there is very little to suggest science fiction until the end. I did have some trouble getting a sense of the society they live in, since so much of the story is outside of it. I wish I knew more, other than the fact that they terraform planets, but I suppose this be covered in the sequels.
This story is very character based, action taking a back seat. I adored Tarver, but Lilac took some warming up to, which actually fits perfectly. Lilac is a spoiled rich girl, and though she’s not a bad person, it makes her initially hard to identify with all which is what I expect of such a character. She’s self involved and believes the world revolves around her, he gradual change in character is realistic. Tarver is much more relatable, he’s from your average family and is a soldier. Tarver has common sense and makes logical decisions based upon his knowledge and his interactions with Lilac make perfect sense to the reader.
The other thing about this book is it’s filled with cliches and tropes. Like the authors tried to get everyone of the tropes they could in this thing. That said it was fairly enjoyable if you like survivor fiction or like your scifi low key.
