Support for the monarchy is now a minority position in Scotland

ayeforscotland:

Two of the Jubilee events registered in Scotland consist of a Platinum Jubilee Teenage Beauty Pageant hosted by ‘G Maxwell’ and ‘a panel of judges led by Prince Andrew’, and a ‘Guillotine Sharpening Party’.

If you wanted an idea of how Scotland is reacting to the Jubilee.

Whoever is running the official Discworld Instagram account made a Happy Jubilee post today and… I think they may have misjudged the mood of some sections of the Discworld fandom.

This is only within the last couple of hours; I wouldn’t be surprised if this list of comments and quotes grows over the course of the Jubilee weekend.

So I looked in the notes for this post and a bunch of people were going “ok but Terry Pratchett was a knight so he must not have hated the monarchy THAT much or he would have turned the knighthood down” and like. First of all. Did you guys miss Vimes in the books getting promoted, becoming part of the aristocracy, and hating it? Pratchett literally put his mixed feelings about his OBE in the books.

Dude was knighted in 1998. Four years later, Night Watch came out and it included this quote:

Screenshot of a quote from Goodreads. Text: "But the helmet had gold decoration, and the bespoke armorers had made a new gleaming breastplate with useless gold ornamentation on it. Sam Vimes felt like a class traitor every time he wore it. He hated being thought of as one of those people that wore stupid ornamental armor. It was gilt by association. Terry Pratchett, Night Watch (Discworld, #29; City Watch, #6)"

Which is both hilarious and, I think, tells you a lot about how Pratchett felt about being knighted.

Anyway I also read somewhere that Pratchett wanted to be a knight pretty much so he could have his own sword. And he got one. Good for him.

I’m expecting to find out that the Queen loves Discworld.

Considering that her favourite Doctor incarnation is the Ninth Doctor (played by Christopher Ecclestone), I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true. The monarchy really has no self-awareness.

Anything sum up the state of this country more than foodbanks being shut over the Jubilee weekend?

I am torn between my excitement for reading a queer love story and my Sam Vimes-level dislike of monarchy.

image text from Les Mis: England solves the first of these two problems. She creates wealth wonderfully; she distributes it badly. This solution, which is complete only on one side, leads her inevitably to these two extremes: monstrous opulence, monstrous misery. All the enjoyment to a few, all the privation to the rest, that is to say, to the people; privilege, exception, monopoly, feudality, springing from labour itself, a false and dangerous situation which founds public power upon private misery, which plants the grandeur of the state in the suffering of the individual.

That’s the kind of question that only has one right answer, like “is the Queen dead?” The obvious answer to that being, yes, absolutely, she’s been dead since 2007 and it’s a good thing.
