The sirens of ancient Greek mythology were bird-women whose enchanted singing lured sailors off course, causing shipwreck and disaster. This vase is painted with this famous scene and is known as the Siren Vase. It is a wide-necked vessel thought to have been used for serving wine. The image is of beautiful detail in a magnificent black ground. These two colours contrast very well together enabling the siren painter to create the beautiful Siren Vase.

The mosaic picture of a domesticated dog, leashed and chained, with the words “cave canem” (beware of the dog) written under the animal, greeted (or, well, warned) visitors upon entering the house. The figure served as protection over the more private quarters of the 2nd century BC Roman home, one of the most famous at the site thanks to its elaborate mosaic floors and frescoes depicting scenes from Greek mythology.

The Hittite Sun Disk or Hittite Sun Course is an ancient Anatolian symbol dating back to the 20th century BC. The symbol belongs to the Hattis from the pre-Hittite period. The Sun Disk was used in ceremonies by Hattians about 4.000 years ago.
Round sphere forming the Sun Disk symbolizes the earth or the sun. At the bottom, there are two horn-like protrusions but what they represent is not clear. The protrusions at the top represent fertility, and the procreation of nature.

Be cheerful, enjoy your life! The mosaic, which is likely from the 3rd century BC (?), is believed to have served as an elaborate centerpiece of a floor located in the dining room of a wealthy man’s home. It says “ΕΥΦΡΟCΥΝΟC” which means joyful, full of happiness, cheerful.

This vase, found at Palaikastro, a wealthy site on the far eastern coast of Crete, is the perfect example of elite Minoan ceramic manufacture. It is 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) high, wheel-made, hand-painted, and meant to hold a valuable liquid—perhaps oil of some kind. Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask. A spout and stirrup-style handles (which would allow the user to carefully control the flow of the liquid out of the container) were added by hand, as well as a base, to facilitate the standing upright of the vessel.

Literally, scutum means “shield” (pl. scuta). It was an oval shield, and then a rectangular shield, used to parry blows, which was a constant inventory of Roman soldiers from the 5th century BC until the end of the 3rd century AD, when the use of rectangular shields ceased, and they became oval or round. This design is a realistic reproduction of the most familiar Roman shield type as a case. Most designs of scutum were symmetrical and used the colours: red (for Mars the God of war), yellow, white and gold. Lightning bolts are Symbol of Jupiter (king of the Gods.) Romans believed he threw thunderbolts from the sky. Eagle’s wings and Eagle are symbolised as King of the birds and worked with God Jupiter. Eagle is a symbol of power, strength. Arrows show the Roman army conquered many lands
