Apollon in the building! (or shall I say the pantheon? I’ll go home)

I am so glad that I did a redesign for him and Artemis! I already had designs for them. They stayed the same for 3 years I think. But I wasn’t quite satisfied with them, because they didnt really look like twins. I made them as different from eachother as sun and moon, but I didnt like it anymore because of that. I’ll explain my vision on them more when I finish Artemis (she’s up next, and I am really happy with her design so far, so I cant wait to show you guys!). I’ll also do a comparison of the old and new designs. So keep an eye out for that!

Apollo: Son of Zeus, twin brother of Artemis. God of music, healing, light (sun) and truth, prophecy and oracles.

You’ll probably see a lot of ‘green flames’ with him. It is part of my vision on him as ‘the God of prophecy and oracles’. I’d like to pay as much attention on it as him being ‘the God of light (the sun)’

Silver tetradrachm depicting the Owl of Athena (c. 480 BC).⁣ ⁣

Athena; Greek Goddess of Wisdom and Courage, Civilization and Justice, of Artisanal Skill and Strategic Warfare. The patron Goddess of Athens and her virtues were often represented with the Owl, for its ability to pierce through the gloam of night allows it the vision and perception to see well beyond those who are blinded by the darkness around them. In Athena the Athenians saw the virtues they sought to aspire to, and commemorated her by painting the Owl into their pottery and vases, and would even mint the unblinking and ever-vigilant Owl into their coinage.⁣

Octopus vase from Palaikastro, c. 1500 B.C., 27 cm high. Now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, Greece.⁣

This vase, found at Palaikastro, a wealthy site on the far eastern coast of Crete, is the perfect example of elite Minoan ceramic manufacture. It is 27 cm (about 10.5 inches) high, wheel-made, hand-painted, and meant to hold a valuable liquid—perhaps oil of some kind. Its shape is somewhat unusual, constructed by slipping together, while still leather hard (clay that is not quite dry), two shallow plates which had been made on a fast spinning potter’s wheel and with highly refined clay. The circular bases of these shallow plates are still visible in the center of both sides of the flask. A spout and stirrup-style handles (which would allow the user to carefully control the flow of the liquid out of the container) were added by hand, as well as a base, to facilitate the standing upright of the vessel.⁣

An aryballos (Greek: ἀρύβαλλος; plural aryballoi) was a small spherical or globular flask with a narrow neck used in Ancient Greece. It was used to contain perfume or oil, and is often depicted in vase paintings being used by athletes during bathing.

The shape of the aryballos originally came from the oinochoe of the Geometric period of the 9th century BC, a globe-shaped wine jar. By the Proto-Corinthian period of the following century, it had attained its definitive shape, going from spherical to ovoid to conical, and finally back to spherical. This definitive form has a wide, flat mouth, and a single small handle. Some later variations have bell-shaped mouths, a second handle, and/or a flat base. Potters also created inventive shapes for aryballoi.

Little Owl as a Hoplite warrior.

Available on: amazon.com/dp/B09WYVKJ13

This design is inspired by the armed owl figure in an ancient Greek vase, which is approximately 2500 years old. In Greek mythology, a little owl (Athene noctua) traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, or Minerva, her syncretic incarnation in Roman mythology.

These statues of children at the Vravrona museum, were gifts to Artemis who was their protector. Some were sick, some becoming adults and wish for good fortune etc. All of them carry their favourite toy or animal. Got inspired by one of these, so here’s my take._______________________________________ #statues #color #illustration #creative #artoftheday #characterdesign #sketchoftheday #instaart #dailyart #girl #pigeon #museum #ancientgreece #vravrona #disneyprincess #zerotohero #digitalart #wacom #cintiq (at Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Βραυρώνας)
